Did you know that the seventh and penultimate omen of the fall of Tenochtitan was a bird with a mirror on its head?
This omen was witnessed by Moctezuma II himself, and the chronicles tell of his encounter with this strange being, a harbinger of the gods to warn him of the final fall.
“Something was caught in the nets. The hunters caught a certain ashen bird like a crane. Then they went to show it to Motecuhzoma, at the House of Black (the house of magical studies). The Sun had reached its highest point: it was midday. There was something similar to a mirror on the bird's head: it was as if it had a perforation on its middle point.
That night, people could see the sky, the stars, the Mastelejo (comet). Motecuhzoma interpreted this as a bad omen. Then, when he looked at the bird’s head a second time, he saw in the background something that looked like a group of people who were running, in a rush, shoving each other. They fought among themselves and were carried by some kind of deers. In that instant, Motecuhzoma called his wizards, his sages. He said to them: "What have I seen?" The sages were searching for an answer, tried to see something. But everything was gone, they saw nothing.”
For this WIP we present to you this mythical bird, but in place of a simple obsidian mirror on the top of its head, we chose to place a broken obsidian crystal, where those ominous visions would be reflected, heightening the supernatural features of this bird.
