Introduction & News
We’re back with another update! We’re getting back into the groove of a solid update cadence, which means a whole heap of new changes coming your way. Now that we’ve gotten our servers back up and running, we’ve been focusing on laying solid foundations for the development of the game going forward. This not only applies to how we develop for Wizards’ Den; we’re making sure we’re having active conversations with downstream servers so that we can mutually support each other.
On the more exciting side of things, we’ve got plenty of new content for you to feast your eyes upon! Keep reading, and we’ll get into what’s coming up.
New Antagonist: The Changeling
After over a year in development, the Changeling has finally arrived in Wizards’ Den! This horrendous creature can be present alongside other antagonists, stealing the identities of crew members and devouring them for their genomes.
Transforming into the very crew members they consume, the changeling stalks the corridors of the station hidden in plain sight. With a deadly biological arsenal at its disposal, a changeling is the stuff of nightmares to encounter unprepared. They thrive in the shadows of the station, striking when their victims least suspect it.
If cornered, the changeling may reveal aspects of its true form, wielding its lethal anatomy to tear through foes with ease. Even when death looms for it, a changeling can separate from its original body, to bounce back and maintain its reign of terror.
Updated Antagonist: Xenoborgs
Xenoborgs have received a major gameplay revamp in the form of the Xenoborg Extractor. Rather than salvaging for materials, Xenoborgs will need to extract power from the station to expand their ranks and acquire new modules. This should make Xenoborgs more immediately present and a greater threat to the crew. In addition, they’ve been given a number of new experimental modules, such as rocket launchers, radioactive enhancements, new sabotage devices, and more!
We’ll be continuing to fine-tune how Xenoborgs play, plus adding more modules for scout and stealth Xenoborgs aimed at playing to their strengths. We’ll keep you updated as we work on those as well!
New Maps
We’ve got two new maps being added to the map pool: Tram and Sushi! Both maps have their own unique mechanics to set them apart from previous maps in our pool.
Tram Station
Tram Station is unique in that it is connected through a moving shuttle, which is gets its name from. The station also comes with a unique job for the “Tram Driver” which lets players pilot the Tram between checkpoints on the station.
The tram is the most convenient way to get around the station, meaning antagonists can easily isolate various parts of the station when interacting. Mind the gap when waiting for the tram to arrive, and above all else, try not to be on the tracks…
Sushi Station
A relatively evenly-spread out station, Sushi Station is unique in that the center hall connects to a large conveyor system, taking players to different departments on the station. Sushi’s maintenance tunnels also feature a number of interesting and off-the-path features, so go exploring! Or don’t… danger lurks the maints – up to you.
New Art Style
We’re undergoing an art rework! This update includes the first batch of what has been dubbed The Respritening, where we’ve made changes to most walls, floors and wall mounts in order to match our new artistic vision for the game. Along the way, we’ve been listening to the community, making changes and alterations based on the feedback we’re receiving!
Also based on feedback, the cadence for The Respritening will be arriving in smaller, but more frequent batches. This allows us to work better with mapping staff and downstreams, preventing merge conflict issues and developing a sustainable pace for map quality control.
As mentioned before, spriting guidelines will be published as the art revamp progresses! There’s still a lot of work to be done (including changes to the engine that will make things smoother-looking), and we’ll have more resprites in future batches. Here’s some awesome previews:
Minor Updates
Vehicles
We’ve been working on some big under the hood changes for the vehicles system and, while it’s not ready yet, we were able to add rideable office chairs to the game. Any office chair with wheels can now be rolled around while you’re sitting in it. Have fun shirking your work!
Structure Changes
This update also includes the adjustments to structural health changes! These structural health changes are made in-line with the recent changes we’ve made to how explosives work, making it so structural health values are better-proportioned to the new explosion damage values and modelling. Go blow some stuff up!
