Each of these games came out during the long 6.5 year development of BIG HOPS, so it feels like our game is made in conversation with theirs:
We all share a lot of the same Zelda and general Nintendo-feeling DNA. Our games are about cute little animals exploring big worlds. Each appears simple and light-hearted on the surface and when you dig in you find yourself attached to the characters and world.
A Short Hike showed us you can evoke feelings of a huge, seemingly endless world with careful set dressing and fog. It showed less is more with characters who didn't need to say much to build a sense of place. It showed that you don't need to be a chosen hero or have the world revolve around you to create meaning and that real-feeling, modern relationships are even more evocative.
Lil Gator Game reminded us to let players goof off more. We relaxed a bit and let the story and characters be more chill and funny instead of trying to be so serious all the time after playing this. We also added a lot more loose breakable things for the fun of it.
Little Kitty, Big City taught us to focus on the small things. Rather than build an endless open world lets make smaller spaces that are more populated with interactions, secrets, and funny moments. It also showed us that focusing on character is what matters- it's no mistake that the animals are much more detailed and meticulously animated than the humans and scenery. We also love their frog hat and have decided to match their freak:

That's all I've got to say here. Thanks for reading and please enjoy BIG HOPS and all the games in the Animal Adventurers Bundle 🐸🐊🐦😻
