"No king rules forever, my son" - some wise guy.
Hello everyone!
Only five more days until we launch into Early Access, and we hope you're as excited as we are. Today we're going to take a look at another important part of Star Dynasties: heirs.

You won't rule your dynasty forever. War, assassinations, sickness, or the inevitability of old age will eventually claim you. When that happens, you better hope that you've done your duty as a parent and raised a fine heir to take over.
Raising an heir
As your children grow up, they will usually inherit traits from their parents, both positive and negative. That all happens passively as they age, but there are moments when you can influence their traits.
As random events, opportunities may present themselves where you can teach your child a lesson. In the example below, your niece wants to know why your people's laws are so harsh on thieves.

Your choice here will greatly affect how this child will act when she comes of age. The first choice will give her the Greedy trait, which will make her less liked by other nobles, but will increase her administration score. That will in turn increase her household's income, and the amount of vassals she can have.
Alternatively, the Honorable trait would make her significantly more likeable, at the cost of a much lower security score. That means your niece's reign might end at the tip of an assassin's blade.
These choices are paramount in determining your heir's playstyle.
The inheritance
When your heir finally comes of age, they will inherit just about everything of yours... even your transgressions. "The sins of the father" and all that.

If your new leader is still young, their skills won't be as developed as their ancestor's were. It's wise to train your young leader's ability scores to make sure your house doesn't fall into ruin!
