Hi there!
This week, I tried to solve the "simple task" - make basic Fog of War system. As a gamer who grew up on Age of Empires and Warcraft, I thought it must be quite a trivial task, everyone can make it. Well... no. I managed to create a working prototype by the end of the week and I can use it to test the overall "do I need a fog of war" question.
But it was a bit hard to find an adequate tutorials and solution. Most of them were like "now we'll write a 2000 lines of code algorythm" or "everything is done. Now just use your postprocess material which you don't have and don't have any idea how to make one" :D
Current FoW implementation is very basic, but maybe it'll add enough to overall danger level of the game. And there is always room for improvement.
I've started to implement the context menu for player's actions. Now you can right click on ~anything and get the available options. It looks way cleaner that the old half-screen UI. I'm not sure if I'll be able to put the building logic in it, though. But I'll try.
I always playtest with x20 speed and that actually is a problem. Sure, you can find logic bugs faster, but it's not an actual gameplay. And when I tried to play on the standart speed - it was way to slow to be even remotely fun. I tweaked the delays between AI actions and removed x20 speed completely. Now I'm playing as a normal user and can improve the ACTUAL gameplay :D
Last, but not least - I've made my first build and uploaded it to Steam. Launched the game through Steam, made some screenshots. Quite a nice feeling, playing your own game in steam.
So, as always, stay tuned for more updates! ;-)
