A Headspace in 1000 Deaths is the physical manifestation of the character’s psyche. As your character in the story encounters dilemmas, you are taken to the Headspace to resolve the said dilemma. Each Headspace is unique and reflects the character they represent.
For example, below is Vayu and their Headspace as a teenager.

The Headspace evolves as a character grows, distinguishing between different life stages—baby, teenage, adulthood, and old age—and showing how characters become complex as they grow.
Here are Vayu’s Headspaces as Baby, Teen, Adult, and Elder.

But the real question is - why are they crucial in 1000 Deaths?
Headspaces contain gravity-bending 3D platforming levels which you complete to unlock choices! They also contain broadcasts— windows into the characters’ minds— hidden bonus levels, and most importantly, mind-bending boss levels.

Once you complete the boss level, you unlock 2 choices, and then you make a decision that opens up a new branch of the story. You can also return to any Headspace later and see where the other choice takes you!

What else can you do in the Headspace?
You can discover secrets that tell you about your character's state of mind or chat with manifestations of characters from the game’s main world. You can also walk on the walls and ceilings. Apart from the 3D platforming levels, only within the Headspaces in 1000 Deaths can you manipulate gravity.
Time to get exploring and see someone’s mind upside down!
