Hey everyone,
We're going to zoom out a bit today and have a look at the world map for DNFC, there's a whole world outside the walls of your business. and they want what you're selling!
Early designs of the game considered having a huge map with hundreds of plots and a vast number of businesses that could be duplicated all around. This size was however at odds with the smaller scale viewing and management of your simulated people, their “needs” and their reactions; all of which would be missed by players when witnessing the world from far away over a huge landscape.
There was plenty to gain from reducing down such as an in depth product quality system, employee management controls, and tower defense design to name but a few. On top of this, the world itself could become more intricate and hand crafted.
The final map has different areas to the city; suburbs and farms in the west, industry and ports to the south, high rise downtown and beachfront bars to the East. There are many places players can choose to set up their businesses, with each new plot offering different business types to develop.

The first map prototype had a small central compound with 2 business plots available to purchase. At this stage we knew we wanted to have a beach out to the East, shown in beige and industry and Port areas down South shown in brown.

Further on in development we made substantial progress to achieving the beachfront and industry areas we desired. We had also made good progress creating suburban and commercial districts too.

Here is a more recent shot of the map with more areas filled in and the port area complete. We still need to do more work to make the player plots (in brown) look more interesting than an empty patch of dirt. You can see the large central compound in the centre. This is actually split into subplots allowing the player to expand their central drug facility over time as their business empire grows.
We hope you're excited to make your mark in our big voxel world!
