The attack on Pearl Harbor, which occurred on December 7, 1941, was a pivotal event that thrust the United States into World War II. Carried out by the Imperial Japanese Navy, the surprise assault targeted the U.S. Pacific Fleet stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. In a coordinated series of air strikes, Japanese forces inflicted devastating damage on American battleships, cruisers, and aircraft. The attack resulted in the destruction or severe damage of eight battleships, including the USS Arizona, which suffered a catastrophic explosion and sank with the loss of over a thousand lives.
The next day President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared war on Japan, marking the beginning of America's active involvement in the global conflict. The aftermath of Pearl Harbor saw a surge in enlistments, industrial production for the war effort, and a commitment to total war. The United States became a key Allied power, contributing significantly to the eventual defeat of Japan and Germany. The attack on Pearl Harbor remains one of the key moments of World War II. While the United States likely would have entered the war at some point, the attack accelerated it and had the American people more supportive of the war.
