Hi all, as of this blog post, development has begun on FIREFIGHT RELOADED's final major content update (for now); REMNANTS. This update will be released in the same nature as the last two updates (ENDGAME and INVASION) and will include new maps, gameplay features, weapons, UI updates, enemies, and new original tracks for the mod's evolving soundtrack.
I feel like the biggest question for most people here is "Why end development?". FIREFIGHT RELOADED has been in development for a significant part of my life now, as it even celebrated its 10th birthday not too long ago. The original plan for ENDGAME was for it to be a true final update, although plans for that update were moved over to individual content updates, which includes INVASION and now REMNANTS. The development time of ENDGAME was incredibly long and released with little content as later development was focused on releasing a stable update more than adding in a lot of content. The original concept for ENDGAME was too ambitious and so it was cut down to even enable a release in the first place. INVASION and REMNANTS aim/ed to add in a lot of content as I wanted to finish off FIREFIGHT RELOADED right.
As for after this update's release, there are still plans for FR to get bug fixes, crash fixes, translation updates, and QOL features after REMNANT'S release. In the future there may be future content updates as well, so that's part of the reason I'm not strictly calling this "the final update" for the mod.
The main reasons why development is coming to a (at least temporary) halt after this update is because I plan on working on more projects (both games and mods), and I needed to allocate more resources (time mainly) to those.
This means that the planned remade FR multiplayer component, as hinted at earlier in the year, has been shelved (not cancelled) as the projects I've been planning on are taking higher priority over FR. This doesn't mean that I won't return to the idea in the future, in fact this idea is still being considered. It's just that I don't have the time to work on a multiplayer component for the mod, especially at the scope I planned for it as stated in the original post. In addition, I also want FR to be more content complete, so the multiplayer component (if it does go into development) will have the same content as the singleplayer. I will post additional updates to this component if this does end up going into development.
If you'd like to contribute to translating FR as this update develops (and get a shout-out in the credits), and you have a GitHub account, go to https://gitlocalize.com/repo/9958. No AI or machine translations, please.
On other news, as stated earlier, I plan on writing a soundtrack for this update. After release, I plan on figuring out a way to release the soundtrack both physically and onto streaming platforms. Most of the soundtrack can be legally released, but the album version of some tracks contain vocal samples from HL2. As a result, I would release the in-game variations to those platforms as they don't include the samples. However, the original versions of the albums will still have their album versions as they are explicitly free to download.
I plan to also release blogposts every so often as I complete the update, so expect more to see more updates as it develops. I plan to release the update this summer, however I will publish more release details when I feel like the update is ready to release.
