Developer journal:
Completing the long-haul flight (12 hours) to the continent of Asia all by myself, was a huge milestone in itself for me. Considering my health predicaments, it’s been far outside my comfort zone, and something my doctors have been very apprehensive about. I am too stubborn to slow down, and I find immense gratification in proving to myself my disease doesn’t stop me.
All western social media platforms—including Discord—are blocked in China, and my VPN connectivity had recurring issues, so I was not very active online during my trip. Familiarizing myself with the Chinese apps for navigation, payment, communication, etc. has been intriguing, as their level of efficiency is astounding, far ahead of the west.

PGConnects Summit Shanghai
I started by attending PGConnects Summit, which is an excellent opportunity to prepare for ChinaJoy and make connections. I was lucky enough to be selected for a free indie table again, even after they provided one for me in Barcelona. I was invited to a lot of interesting mixer-events and after-parties, including the Game Gacha Party, where I met one of the organizers of Taipei Game Show.
ChinaJoy 2026
Moving on to the main event; ChinaJoy was by far the largest game festival I’ve ever seen. This year had a total of 438 900 visitors, nearly half a million. That amount of people moving through the halls over the span of a single weekend can make your head spin. I got a lot of validation for my game, and being stationed in the B2B-section, I met a lot of interested publishers and other industry professionals. For any future participation though, I will make sure to go B2C to emphasize exposure toward regular gamers. I would like to thank my friend Claire Gu, who volunteered as my assistant and translator at the stand, and Yuyan Shen for in-game localization and “adopting” my Chinese name 艾弘毅 !
Beijing
When ChinaJoy wrapped up, the “business”-part of my trip was concluded. I took a few days to just relax in Shanghai after the stress and chaos of ChinaJoy, then I went on a night-train travelling all the way up to Beijing. I wanted to see Tiananmen Square with my own eyes, and step inside the Forbidden City. On my last day I went to the Summer Palace. I wish I had delegated more days to Beijing, as the parks and nature areas were very lovely and tranquil. I’d stay longer in China overall if it wasn’t for some social obligations I had at home. I really want to see Chongqing, Chengdu, Xi’an, Shenzhen, and many other places. I will definitely come back.
Current Situation and Future Plans
At the end of my journey, I picked up a nasty virus. When I got back home, I was combating headache and fever combined with jet lag, and throat pain so severe I took some leftover Tramadol from an earlier surgery. Tests show it’s not COVID-19 or influenza, surprisingly. I’ve been completely out of it for over a week, but I am starting to resemble a human again now.
As for the future, I really want to strengthen my new ties in the Chinese market, and partake in the WePlay Expo back in Shanghai in November! I can't yet confirm, as this event will be rather costly. However, I can confirm that I will attend the Taipei Game Show 2027!
