Affliction,
Hey everyone!
I wanted to post another quick status update about the work that I accomplished yesterday.
I finished up the ai code for all of the npcs ai in the game. This doesn't mean they won't be improved on or fixed if there are bugs in the future, it just means that they work well, and they do their job for the time being.
Another thing I took care of yesterday was the player sound effects. Footsteps now sound heavier and they give a real "boots on the ground" feeling. They make the game much more immersive than the old stock ones. I don't want anything stock, I want everything to be unique, so I'm going out of my way to do so. I'm hoping that when players hear the difference, they'll agree with me that they are much better.
Atmospheric sound effects have also been improved so they should give a much better immersive feel.
Within the next few weeks, I plan to do the voice acting and sound effects for the human npcs. I think those will turn out pretty well, as I have voice masking software which can do many different effects.
Weapon sound effects have been taken care of, but they still act a little strange now and then. The way the engine handles automatic fire is quite different so they will still be worked on.
Another thing I did was reduce overall movement speed slightly, and increase the footstep sound rate dramatically. Before I did this, the player moved very fast and footstep sounds were too far apart. Think of a person taking steps of about 5 feet long. Yes, it was bad. Now, they fit directly with the animation and speed of acceleration. To go with this, I also increased the camera wobble when moving but only slightly. I personally dislike games that over dramatize camera sway from movement so I did this very sparingly.
We're getting there, it really shouldn't be too much longer before I have something playable. Technically, I do now, but it isn't much. I need to complete more mapping first before I release anything. I hope you all understand why things are taking this long, I'm really trying to set this apart from the mass of other (mostly sub-par) products from this engine.
