Ok, thanks everyone for the response about map-creation/modding, I think it's pretty safe to say now that it would be of interest.
There's an alternative way of handling map-making/modding that I'd like to run past you all, to see if it's acceptable, since I think it'll be a lot quicker to implement for me.
What I described in the first announcement was that creators could upload their maps/mods to the workshop independently and anyone could download and use them straight away. Unfortunately, getting the game to actually load stuff like that at runtime is not proving as straightforward as I'd hoped. I'm sure I could get it to work eventually, but I think it'll take quite a while and with this other system, I could get the workshop up much sooner.
This alternative system is that I could just download anything creators upload to the workshop and add it to the full game directly to be shipped with the next update, so that there's no need for players to download anything separately. I'd probably list the maps under a "user created" section, and add something to credit the creator.
If you made a map or something, you'd just have to copy it's file and upload it to the workshop, where I'd review it and probably add it to the game for the next update.
This method could have the following potential downsides:
-I can't just accept everything anyone makes into the game unconditionally. Although I wouldn't plan on being unduly picky, there'd have to be some baseline level of quality, and also I definitely couldn't accept anything that infringes copyright.
-Larger download size for the main game, since all users now have to download all the mods.
-A delay before your map or mod becomes available for all users to play, since you'd have to wait for the next update (probably no more than a week though). This also applies if you want to update your map/mod, of course.
-This is only really going to be practical for a relatively small number of people making maps/mods, which is what I'd expect at first anyway, but if ZGA has a surge in popularity, I think I could always switch later to the system I described in my first announcement.
Anyway, let me know if you think any of those downsides are a deal breaker (or you think of some other downside). If the general feeling is that this is no worse, or not much different from the system I describe in the first announcement then I'd feel inclined to go ahead with this alternative system, so that I can get back to working on other aspects of the game sooner.
