This weeks updates include a very large amount of optimisation some bug fixes and a new subtitle feature.
I’ve been working on Whirligig for a long time now and basically learning how to program in Unity3D and release a program on Steam. Because of this I had a lot of unoptimised code and functions in Whirligig that needed cleaning up. For the past month I’ve been mostly optimising Whirligig’s core to get as much performance out of it as possible. Hopefully this version should make Whirligig the smoothest and most efficient version yet.
Now as I've spent a lot of time rewriting the code there is a chance I've added bugs or glitches. I've tested and worked on fixing these as best I can and will continue to do so but if you find any please let me know.
There are a couple of other things that have happened in this version. Here's a list of all the changes I can remember.
- Code optimisation.
- Updated Unity3D to 5.5.1f1.
- Updated video plugin.
- Fixed bug with backgrounds that allowed people to try and choose the current background when it wasn't a jpg or png causing Whirligig to crash.
- Added right to left support in the subtitles. This is currently only available on the keyboard by hitting 't' or mapping it to an xbox button. It will exist in the settings menu in the next update hopefully.
How to try the Betas
To start using the betas (and if you want the latest features and bug fixes it's recommend as I'm quite active in beta releases) all you have to do is right click on Whirligig, go to properties, go to the beta tab and select whirligig_early_access_latest_beta. This beta is always updated with every version. If you just want to try this beta only select whirligig_early_access_v.3.93. If you want to stop using the betas select 'none'.
If the update causes issues
Don't worry I keep all previous builds in the betas tab. You can return to the previous default version which was 3.89 by right clicking on Whirligig in Steam, going to the properties tab, going to the beta dropdown and selecting whirligig_early_access_v.3.89 from the list.
You could also try resetting the player which takes it back to a default installation. There are instructions for this here.

Final thoughts
As there has been a lot of code changes to optimise Whirligig there is a chance I've added bugs. Please let me know of any that you find and I'll do my best to fix them as soon as possible.
I hope you like this update and if so and you want to show your appreciation leave some nice reviews.
Over and out.
