Hey everyone,
After announcing last month that our next update would officially bring Oculus compatibility and cross-platform play to Raw Data, it’s finally here. (There’s also a bunch more exciting new content that we’ll get to in a second!)
Today is an awesome day for the VR community: it’s the first fulfillment of Survios’ platform-agnostic vision for social, human-facing VR, and we’re continuing to explore new and exciting ways to enhance cross-platform socialization and communication. But for now, we’re stoked to welcome Oculus players into the Raw Data community and work together to unify the VR community, one robot kill at a time!
A quick note on cross-platform as it works right now: the blue avatars that appear in the Showroom will now be populated by both Oculus Home and Steam users! You can play together by using Raw Data’s multiplayer search function; check out the instructions here for setting up a game. Also, while Raw Data does have cross-platform functionality, users on Oculus and Steam will not see each other on their store-specific friends list. As always, if you have any issues, check out our Steam Community forums and please submit any bugs you encounter via our Bug Reporting Form!
Also, Oculus users: if you already purchased the game through Steam, there's no need to re-buy on Oculus Home. We've added the Oculus optimizations to the Steam version as well, so you'll get the same experience.
And just in time, we’ve got a brand-new mission for Vive and Oculus users to play together. SyndiK8 has tasked you with a highly-classified objective—with the reassuring codename of “Cataclysm”—that’ll cripple Eden’s defense system, but as you get closer to unlocking the macabre secrets of Eden Corp, you’re getting a strange impression that it isn’t just aNg3L who’s been monitoring your progress. Chairman Shiro has a surprise for you as well.

Fortunately, two of SyndiK8’s elite operatives have been putting in some lengthy training sessions. After the horrors they’ve already witnessed, Saija’s and Boss’ commitment to the cause has only grown more steadfast, and that’s reflected in their new and reworked special abilities. Here’s a quick rundown, but we recommend reading the patch notes for the full details on all the fun ways you can crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentations of their programming.
Boss finally got the tech to upgrade his Zaitomo bionic arms, and with them come two abilities. Iron Fist charges his enhanced musculature to deliver a devastating melee knockout to any unfortunate enemy who gets too close. And when you mean business, the ultimate Fury is Boss’ version of a berserker rage, complete with reduced incoming damage, a residual AOE, and lots of lots of beating in robots’ faces.
Through her meditative-yet-vicious ninjutsu training sessions, Saija has tapped deep into the teachings she recalls from her father’s days in The Shimmering Blade and reevaluated her personal loadout. It’s a good thing she’s on our side, because when her very human feelings of hatred and betrayal merge with her skills, the results can be devastating.
As she’s become even more attuned to channeling her fury through her Flash Blade, Saija’s ditched Shuriken Stream in favor of a more two-handed approach to taking out distant enemies. Her new ability Focal Strike charges the Flash Blade when readying a two-handed strike, increasing damage and extending reach when the blade meets its mark. And when she’s really angry, Saija enters a different plane altogether, one where her superhuman reaction time ensures her strikes hit home: the ultimate Shadow Slash unleashes heat-seeking energy beams with every slash of her Flash Blade that directly targets distant enemies for effective, efficient cleanup.
Finally, Gravity Thrust has been combined into Telekinesis— this singular and more powerful move is no longer an ultimate, but a special ability activated with the Grip or Trigger buttons—to cause a lot of damage to a primary enemy while affecting those around it with an AOE.
Finally, we’ve added a new unlockable deployable defense: a heavy-hitting Mortar Turret. This long-range turret fires explosive shells at distant enemies, but is less accurate at targeting close-range threats, so place it wisely!
We can’t wait to hear about your experiences with Saija’s and Boss’ new loadouts, especially if you team up on the Cataclysm mission together. ːsteamhappyː Thank you guys for being so awesome and supportive, and stay tuned to the new in-game Community Board for more Raw Data news and cool community updates!
Patch Notes for Update 0.6 (released March 16, 2017)
IMPORTANT: Our development resolution settings have changed internally. After updating, your graphics settings will be reset and benchmarked to your hardware; you may need to adjust your settings further. Your super sampling settings multiplier will be lower than in prior builds, but will have the same or higher quality.
Oculus Rift+Touch Support
- Cross-Platform Play: Play co-op with Steam or Oculus users regardless of hardware!
- Cross-Platform Leaderboards: Steam and Oculus users are now ranked together. Please note that leaderboards will be wiped from time to time during Early Access development.
- Quick-turn and Guide Arrows: Oculus players with the Touch two-camera configuration can use quick-turn to navigate Eden Corp. Additionally, holographic guide arrows keep the player oriented toward their sensors even during intense combat. Quick-turn can be disabled in the options menu.
- Tutorials: Showroom tutorials have been updated with Oculus Touch controls.
New Abilities: Boss
New abilities have been added to Boss’s loadout. We’ve also updated some of his existing functions.
- New Ability: Iron Fist: Charge up a devastating punch in either empty hand by clenching your fist and holding it near your head or upper body. When fully charged, Boss’s fist will burst with fire and electricity; swing it at an enemy to deal increased damage and knock it back.
- New Ultimate: Fury: Go on a rampage! Fury greatly reduces incoming damage and instantly charges both of Boss’s fists, allowing you to deliver repeated, rapid-fire Iron Punches. Charge your fist again while Fury is active to deal massive damage and unleash an explosive shockwave that blasts back multiple enemies.
- Updated Ability: Nade Launcher: Launched grenades can now be manually detonated. Pull the non-dominant Trigger while the grenade is in flight to make it instantly explode.
- Updated Ultimate: Air Juggle: Air Juggle now has a 15-second cooldown (up from four) and can affect Ninja Bots.
- Shotgun Auto-Grip: Added auto-grip functionality to Dominator Shotgun to improve reloading and off-hand interaction.
- VFX/SFX Polish: Boss’s abilities have updated visual and audio effects.
New Abilities: Saija
Several of Saija’s abilities have been overhauled or replaced to improve her combat viability and balance her with the other heroes. Note: Saija currently features four tech unlocks as opposed to Bishop’s and Boss’s five.
- New Ability: Focal Strike: Use a two-handed grip held close to the body to charge a more powerful slash attack with significantly increased damage and longer reach.
- New Ultimate: Shadow Slash: Enter a hyper-focused state where every swing of your Flash Blade emits a heat-seeking arc of energy that automatically travel to distant enemies.
- Updated Ability: Telekinesis: Telekinesis gains the AOE traits of Gravity Thrust (which has been removed as a separate ability) and has been improved to affect all enemy types. Telekinesis is no longer activated with the ability selector; just aim at an enemy with your empty hand and use Grab or Trigger. The primary target can be grabbed and lifted by telekinetic force while surrounding secondary targets will also be thrust in whichever direction the player gestures. Weaker enemies can be grabbed and pulled toward the player, crushing them into a ball that can then be lobbed at other enemies for significant damage. Slamming a held enemy into the ground causes them to crater for additional damage.
- Updated Ability: Katana Throw: Throwing the Flash Blade has been adjusted and should feel much more accurate to use.
- Updated Ultimate: Levitation Smash: Levitation Smash now emits a powerful, front-facing shockwave when Saija slams down.
- Removed Abilities: Shuriken Stream and Gravity Thrust have been removed from Saija’s list of abilities and/or integrated into other existing abilities.
- Flash Blade Damage: Due to her powerful new abilities, Saija’s Flash Blade damage has been reduced.
- VFX/SFX Polish: Saija’s abilities have updated visual and audio effects.
New Content
- New Mission: Cataclysm: Descend to new depths of terror within Eden Tower’s expansive, central Data Chamber. Fend off enemies across environments that change on each attempt while disabling generators powering Eden’s defense system. Meanwhile, Chairman Shiro has something special in store for our SyndiK8 heroes…
- New Defense: Mortar Turret: Deploy a turret that fires explosive, long-range mortars at enemies. This turret is most effective at taking out distant enemies, but is less accurate at targeting close-range threats.
- Community Board: Upon entering the Showroom after launch, players will now see a splash screen displaying information relevant to the Raw Data community, including promotions, community events, and maintenance downtime for online services.
- Shotgun Tutorial: A new product demonstration outlining Boss’s Dominator Shotgun is now available in the Showroom.
- Player Representation System: Complete overhaul to player rig and animations to more accurately reflect the player’s real-world body.
- AI Animation Polish: Various animation improvements for Rifle Bot, Beam Bot, Melee Bot, and Heavy Bot. Additionally, core AI locomotion functionality has been reworked to improve the look of all ground enemy movement.
- Orbital Rings in Title Room: Players will now see the full scope of Eden Corp’s influence in the Raw Data universe from the very start of the game.
- General VFX Polish: Visual effects for heroes, defenses, and enemies have been polished throughout the game.
- Showroom AFK Detection: Added AFK detection in the Showroom to remove inactive hosts from the matchmaking queue.
Gameplay & Balance Improvements
- Unlock System Update: Hero abilities will now be unlocked depending on which hero is used to complete a mission. The amount of stolen tech available from each mission remains unchanged, but is now tracked per hero, allowing each hero to unlock tech from earlier missions. Turrets become available for all characters as new maps are unlocked. Note: players with partial unlocks as of this update may encounter issues with some unlocks. To fix this issue, reset your profile in the Options Menu.
- Player Damage Feedback System: Players will now receive visual indicators when damaged, telling them where they’re hit and by which enemy.
- Melee Combat Feedback Improvements: Improved VFX/SFX implemented for critical hits. Improved AI attack VFX, SFX, and animations to more effectively communicate attack indicators. Bot dismemberment will now trigger more frequently on weaker enemies.
- Turret Updates: Turrets now have placement limits: smaller maps allow fewer turrets to be placed, and playing co-op will further reduce the number of turrets that can be placed.
Performance Optimizations
- LOD Culling: Implemented distance LOD culling on VFX to improve performance.
- Ragdoll Scaling: Implemented dynamic ragdoll lifetime scaling for improved performance.
- Adjustable Physics: Added an Options setting for adjusting global physics that should allow users on weaker CPUs to adjust settings for better performance.
- LOD Bone Reduction: Implemented more aggressive LOD bone reduction for enemies.
