The second blog in the series continues showcasing the movement in Kabounce, in this post we’ll discuss the ‘Dash’ movement mechanic.
Dash Design
The Dash was originally designed shortly after the game jam, back then the ball movement was much trickier and we needed an ability that made it easier to quickly hit a bumper you may have missed. In retrospect, we were obviously designing something to fix a problem, but not actually addressing the problem itself.
Later in development we made the movement smoother, and easier to control. The Dash became an ability where people wondered, do I really need this? The Dash was still great for aerial control, but it wasn’t as important anymore. At this stage the dash only featured a left / right direction (using Q / E on keyboard, or LB / RB on a controller).
To make the Dash great again, we made it a single button press that can be controlled using directional controls. Similar to the spin, this ability now provides a great deal of movement freedom.
Advanced applications of the Dash allow you to reset the cooldown when you capture a bumper or hoop with the Dash.
Aside from it being perfect for advanced user to extend air time and allowing you to chain aerial cap, it also works well as a tool to redirect your movement in the air. This is similar to the Spin on the ground, discussed in our last blog.
An additional use is dodging other players trying to eliminate you. But more on this when we blog about the combat in Kabounce.
That was it for the Dash, check back tomorrow for the Powerslide. A movement ability with some advanced hidden tricks!
