Destructible Floor, Zero Latency, More Particles, Dedicated Servers, Boid Brush, Statistics Tool, & more!

{Alert: Some users have performance issues in this version where FPS drops below 10. To fix it, open up the SteamVR settings and toggle async and interleaved reprojection off then back on}

Wow this is a big one!

Destructible floor

First let’s have a moment of silence for the way the rockets used to bounce off the ground for no good reason.. That will be missed.

  • Rockets now explode on contact with the floor and leave craters!
  • We’ve doubled the sculptable volume in SculptrVR!
  • Things get kind of spooky the deeper down you go, though.

Zero latency sculpting in multiplayer

Multiplayer games now use local prediction allow zero-latency sculpting!

This works by locally assuming your action will be placed without conflicts from other nearby actions. If the prediction was wrong, and a conflict occurs, we automatically use the undo/redo system to insert actions into the correct order!

Previously, to ensure that all players see the same order of actions and the same final sculpted world, there was a delay for non-host players. They had to wait to sculpt until the action had been sent all the way to the server and back before actually making the change.

This is way better :-)

More particles!

  • Particle limit is up from 160 to 512
  • More stable physics simulation
  • Reduced draw time overhead while increasing particle limit by using GPU instancing
  • Emitters now produce one particle per second instead of each one having one recycled particle

Dedicated servers

  • When you click the “host” button, you’re actually taking over a dedicated server!
  • Virtual hosting, so the ‘host’ switches hands when that player leaves. It no longer kicks all other players!
  • More reliable file transfer when loading levels
  • Working player count and ping (finally)
  • Improved voice quality
  • Cross platform! We’ve only launched on Steam so far, but now we can launch on Oculus Home, PS4, and Google Daydream and let those users join games with Steam players!
  • We're launching a Daydream version that's cross-play capable THIS WEEK.

Boid brush tool

  • Flocking particles known as ‘boids’ place material
  • Easily place organic shapes
  • The boids fly in a small radius around your hand
  • If you move your hand quickly, the boids will be pulled together into a tight group

Statistics tool

  • Tool is a text panel with stats about your world
  • Stats include: Total Voxels, Total Triangles, Mesh Chunks
  • It also serves as a measuring device!

Other Improvements

  • Save LoDs allows you to save worlds at reduced detail using our LoD system
  • Added LAN multiplayer support (but does this actually benefit anyone other than us devs?)
  • We re-wrote the stamp tool (or copy/paste brush) to address the reliability issues in multiplayer and at various scales.
  • Hang glider now has air brakes! Press the app button to engage.
  • Parabola Teleporter (you can still toggle to the straight ray teleport by pressing the app button)
  • Teleporter locks-in after the trigger is slightly pressed. This allows for more precise locomotion.

Polished UI

  • Avatar/head sculpting has been made into its own mode instead of being done in the gallery
  • Mini-tutorial starts under certain conditions
  • Controller tooltips replace the clunky instructional panels
  • New grid-based tool menus.
  • New in-gallery navigation menu
  • Improved lobby menu
  • New tool icons
  • Outline usernames in MP
  • First steps toward animated controllers
  • Blocky (instead of rounded) player representation
  • Gallery sculptures are easier to select
  • New delete wireframe
  • Removed quit button. Why would you want this?
  • All tools are disabled in the gallery (you’ll only have laser pointers)

Performance

  • Even faster sculpting (~20% speedup)
  • Upgraded to UE4.15.1

Coming Soon

  • Host controls to disable rockets, disable teleporters, limit player scales, etc.
  • Players from daydream, oculus, and ps4 platforms!
  • More social features!
