We're excited to unveil the first look at The Black Pyramid, a narrative-driven experience that delves into themes of language, identity, and cosmic horror. While this is just the beginning, we’re eager to share where the journey is heading.
On Narrative Philosophy
At the heart of The Black Pyramid is a story that unfolds not only through dialogue, but in the spaces between. We’re exploring how environments reflect and betray their inhabitants, how language both shapes and confines understanding, and what happens when these boundaries break down.
Level design is a key component of our narrative approach. From the sterile, oppressive grey of a Brutalist research complex to the cold, geometric repetition of an Arctic base, we’re constantly iterating to create spaces that feel alive; driven by their own stories, and pushing the overall narrative forward.
Current Development Focus
We're in the midst of refining the NPC Behavioral System and how the NPCs of the world create a strong backstory to each level. The challenge lies not in making these systems function, but in ensuring they resonate with thematic intent. Once we've completed the last round of tasks associated with this work, we'll be showcasing some cinematic and gameplay videos!
On Community Engagement & Developmental Transparency
Expect regular updates on design decisions, narrative development, and architectural inspirations that influence the world of The Black Pyramid. We’ll also be sharing deeper dives into the lore and backstory, so you can get a better sense of what makes this experience unique. In the meantime, we're creating new social channels and will be posting them here soon!
A Closing Glimpse
To close this first post, we’d like to offer a snippet of context from Ludwig Wittgenstein, a key influence on the narrative of The Black Pyramid:
"The limits of my language mean the limits of my world." —Ludwig Wittgenstein, Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus
In The Black Pyramid, you’ll step into the shoes of Dr. Mehdi Algun, a linguistic expert who studies the patterns and boundaries of human language. The antagonist of our story—the enigmatic Pyramid—represents a greater philosophical conflict between what is real and what is imagined. As you progress, you'll uncover papers, research, and academic works that shed light on Wittgenstein’s theories and their relevance to the world you're exploring.
