The team at Prologue Games hasn’t just been busy working on our Knee Deep swamp noir adventure this year. We’ve also spent free time playing lots of other games. We’re especially fond of our fellow indie games.
Here’s a rundown of favorite indie games we’ve played in 2015, spanning a spectrum from moody dungeon crawlers to deep space adventures:
Robert Anderson (Environmental Artist)
- Besiege: “Physics-based construction/destruction puzzle game with a fantasy/medieval setting. The puzzles in the campaign not only increase in difficulty, but also force you to build in different styles at a perfect pace.”
- Party Hard: “A slower-paced Hotline Miami with a quirky sense of humor. Great pixel art and a soundtrack that sounds like Daft Punk.”
Sharon Hackney (Designer)
Don’t Starve/Don’t Starve Together: “I really like survival games anyway but the crafting, hunting, collecting resources and fighting monsters with such an animated, "bouncy" but spooky visual made it pretty addicting for me. As much as I enjoyed playing solo, I loved multiplayer even more. And after playing for a while I downloaded a few mods (basically just other characters you can play as) in multiplayer and it's great. It still feels like the same game even when you download popular characters from other series (like the siblings from Gravity Falls) and bits of their personality are sprinkled in. And the audio is a complete win for me: the sound effects when someone's "talking" is hysterical and I generally like how you can just see the condition of the character. Just generally I like how creepy it is and the mysterious things you can fight and find. And the very real concept of surviving in the wild combined with creatures that seem other-worldly.”
Cory Farris (Lead Environmental Artist)
- Armello: “A dark fairy tale game that blends all the best elements of turn based strategy games and complex tabletop games. The game is tough to master which really plays to its strengths: Randomized gameplay which forces you, the player, to constantly adapt. Using card and dice mechanics for combat, the game adds another layer of strategy on top of the hexagonal layout of the game world. All of this wraps itself neatly in exquisite stylized artwork and an astonishing musical score.”
- Starship Corporation: “This is one that I've been toying with since it was on indiegogo several years back, and is now in early access on Steam. While not a 2015 game in the strictest sense of the word, I feel like this one deserves a mention. If you enjoy games like FTL and simulation or tycoon type games, Starship Corporation is an engaging blend of both.”
