Expanded Gamepad Support in New 001 Update + Major Open Dev Kit Progress!

It’s been another busy summer for SoftWeir, with major developments underway across both 001 Game Creator and Open Dev Kit.

This month, we’re releasing a new public update for 001 Game Creator focused heavily on platform compatibility and input support, including expanded gamepad functionality beyond Windows, new vibration support, Android improvements, and several scripting and editor fixes.

We’re also celebrating 10 years since real-time online functionality first arrived in 001 Game Creator, sharing some of the latest major developments happening in Open Dev Kit, and kicking off our August Sale!

10 Years of Online Functionality

Ten years ago, 001 Game Creator took a major step forward with the introduction of real-time networking functionality, opening the door for developers to create connected experiences and bring players together over the internet.

Since then, 001’s networking capabilities have continued to evolve alongside the rest of the engine. What began as another major expansion to 001’s scripting and game development toolkit has now been part of the engine for an entire decade, helping developers experiment with everything from multiplayer projects to other real-time connected systems.

It’s another milestone we’re incredibly happy to celebrate as we continue improving 001 Game Creator and building toward the future with Open Dev Kit.

Latest 001 Game Creator Update

A new public update for 001 Game Creator is arriving with an increased focus on compatibility across platforms beyond Windows.

One of the biggest improvements is expanded gamepad support on additional platforms, helping projects provide more consistent controller input across a broader range of devices. New vibration support, also known as rumble or force feedback, has also been implemented for Android, iOS, and HTML5, further expanding the input options available for cross-platform projects.

The update also includes important Android-related improvements ahead of upcoming Google Play requirements. Google Play Billing Library support has been upgraded to version 9.1.0, alongside fixes for Android keyboard behavior involving multiple editable fields.

Additional improvements include per-speaker pitch controls, a new "Change Line Spacing" text field event, fixes for the "Copy Collection" event reverting from a use value, removal of unnecessary warnings when building games without video resources, and a crash fix involving parameters for custom and network events.

Work on expanded video functionality is also underway, including new camera-view support for video playback. However, these additions will remain in beta for now while we continue bringing video support up to parity across additional platforms.

Altogether, this update is focused on keeping 001 Game Creator compatible with evolving platform requirements while continuing to expand the engine’s cross-platform input and development capabilities.

The Latest from Open Dev Kit

Open Dev Kit development continues to move at a rapid pace, with some of its largest technological expansions yet currently in development.

One of the biggest areas of progress is platform support. Open Dev Kit is being prepared for Android, iOS, macOS, Linux, and HTML5, significantly expanding the range of platforms developers will be able to target.

Its rendering pipeline is also undergoing major modernization, with DirectX 12, Vulkan, and Metal renderers in development alongside multi-threaded rendering for improved performance. Work is also underway on raytracing, volumetric fog and clouds, reflections, lens flares, custom user shaders, and a wide range of post-processing effects including gamma, saturation, vignette, film grain, and other color-grading and lens-stylization controls.

World-building and gameplay systems continue expanding too. Upcoming functionality includes multi-texture tile blending, a dynamic animated water-level tool, A* pathfinding for actors navigating toward locations or following other objects, and new Character and Vehicle Controller systems.

Speaker objects are also in development for more flexible audio environments, alongside many other additions and improvements throughout the engine.

These features are still works in progress and may continue evolving during development, but they represent another major step toward the increasingly broad range of projects and platforms Open Dev Kit is being designed to support.
