So, a blog eh? What should I be telling you? Let me see... Oh! How about the level editor? A cool new feature coming to Zombie Kill Of The Week – Reborn on Steam on March 13th.
Well, some of you might know me before ZKW saw the light of day. If you do you’ll also know that before this project I had these "FPS creation" tools I used to develop.
The tools obviously involved a lot of level editing and when I started making ZKW, the idea of making a level-editor for that also seemed pretty obvious choice.
During the development of Zombie Kill Of The Week people usually wanted me to add two things in it: "Make online multiplayer and make level editor". Coincidentally these two features were also something I wanted to see in the game myself but at the time I just didn’t have the skills. Now, however, I’ve got them sorted.
The first challenge was to make the online multiplayer and I nailed that pretty quickly (I will be updating it as time goes on, of course). My next move was pretty obvious…
It was just a normal rainy day. Monday, typical Monday. I got this crazy idea of how to make the level editor for ZKWR and the next day I started working. The basic idea was to make the level editor as simple to use as possible (so even the graphics artists at Still Running would know how to use it) Another idea was to make it possible for people to share their creations for everyone else to see and play! And, of course, to make everything work on online multiplayer as well (simple)!
Well, by the end of that day, I already had a working level editor, where you could place ground and walls in the map. The basic stuff was done. You can actually see this on the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbiECAjm5FU&index=2&list=UUCaAQoBIhMbraWR94xjL_dA This was after the very first day! – not bad, even if I say so myself.
After the first day, I thought nothing could stop me! And nothing did! Heheh… I’ve been developing and tweaking the level editor every now and then and it’s at the point where it will be ready for release on March 13th. Well. I think I'll write more about that some other day, as this is already turning into a novel, but in short, “It's alive!"
