Hey Everyone,
We wanted to give everyone a quick status update on how things are going with the move to Unity 5, and announce our third weekly cup!
Read on for more.
Weekly Cup #3
After a great Saturday full of competitive DTO action, NitroFPS took out first place in last weekends weekly cup, followed by Early Access Podcast (Don't Shoot Me) in second place, and Ancient in third. Thankfully, rocket-wells were not a contributor to the outcome of this cup, and the final moments of the Grand Final were great to watch! Check out the VoDs on our Youtube Channel.
This week, we've got another weekly cup lined up, which should be played on our Unity 5 patch once it's out! For more details & how to sign up, head on over to the Cybergamer thread here. As always, a big shoutout to our friends from Mwave for supporting competitive DTO, and having great prices on PC hardware & more for Australian & New Zealand gamers!
Unity 5 port update
Over the last week, we've been moving DTO over to Unity 5. Already, in-editor FPS has improved, from <25fps to >100, thanks to the 64bit editor, and as soon as we can get a build to work, we'll know how much client FPS has improved as well!
Overall, quite a few things in Unity 5 are completely broken, which have slowed down the move as we find workarounds for them - trees, for instance, are dependant on the Camera's background clear colour due to a (pretty massive) bug, they also don't render properly in linear lighting (which is what DTO uses).
Also, our first U5 patch won't include the fancy Global Illumination (pretty lighting) features that Unity 5 offers, due to another bug that prevents GI from baking in large scenes like ours, and reliably causes a BSOD with certain values checked.
With all that being said, we are currently still set for the Unity 5 patch to release tomorrow (Tuesday) Wednesday night at our regular patch time!
As always, don't forget to follow us on Twitter for minute-to-minute status updates and notifications of when games & events are starting!
