With the recent release of its latest macOS 10.15, Apple has officially renounced support for 32-bit applications. As you may or may not know, this is also the case for Move or Die, which will no longer be available to play on macOS Catalina devices. Unfortunately, trying to fix this situation is simply not feasible on our part, the reasons why being among the following:
- The lack of support for 32-bit apps on Catalina would require us to rebuild the game's engine as 64-bit and also fix any issues that might crop up along the way.
- We've also developed Move or Die on an old version of the Love2D engine, with a bunch of custom options. Because of these options, switching to a newer version of Love2D would require a lot of work which we have decided against in the past due to lack of time and resources.
- Love2D also uses many other libraries. Going 64-bit is likely to break some of them and while upgrading those libraries to their newer versions would help with the 64-bit transition, this could also cause horrible compatibility issues.
- Then, there's also the OpenGL issue. Apple hasn't completely killed off OpenGL support, but they have announced that they are phasing it out to support their Apple only Metal API. Unfortunatelly, Love2D heavily depends on OpenGL.
That being said, for any Apple user that will not be making the switch to macOS 10.15 Catalina, Move or Die will continue to work as intended.
Obviously, we know that this is not an excuse and that it is a big issue for people who do still decide to update, or for those who will be purchasing new Apple products in the years to come.
We will make sure that these compatibility issues are properly explained and highlighted on the Steam Store Page.
Thank you for supporting us ever since Move or Die came out in Early Access in 2015. Back then, we promised to always keep our game open, updated and available on all PC platforms and we have managed to do so without flaw.
It seems that this time, we have reached a point where things are just out of our reach.
See you in the lobby!
