Hey there everyone,
We’re always amazed when our concept artists send us the next batch of work for each new idea we ask them to realise. Their vast and vivid imaginations allow us to take the game to places that we’d never even thought to dream of, but how do they do it?
We spoke to Dan Lish, one of our artists, and asked him about how he started out on his travels which have brought him to our little land of floating islands and sky whales.
Q – How did you start doing concept art?
Dan: In 2000 an old friend who was a producer at Rockstar Games NYC got in contact to see if I’d like to do some concept art for Serious Sam… I replied, ‘What’s concept art’?’ and my journey began there.
Q – How long have you been in the concept art game? Don’t worry, we won’t try to guess your age from the answer.
Dan: Over 15 years now!
Q – What was your work like when you started off?
Dan: I was an all rounder, also doing graphic design as well as concept art. It was a mixture of traditional and digital art.
Q- How do you come up with the ideas for the concepts – how do you decide what you’re going to draw?
Dan: You follow the direction given to you. You also try out other ideas you may think will help, but be prepared that they may not work, or be approved.
Q -Any advice for new artists on how to get better at art?
Dan: Draw and paint your arse off. Don’t just rely on digital tools. Look at what’s around you you, study and observe it, try out different mediums. Have fun and explore!
Q – Any advice for new artists on how to get their art noticed?
Dan: Social media, enter competitions, be brave and bold but with lots of humility and respect your fellow artists as we’re all on the same journey, after all.
So…enough about us – on to you.
We have a pretty exciting competition for all of you gifted artists out there…it’s tied to news of how you can become a Founder of Worlds Adrift, but more about THAT particular thing later.
We’re going to be producing a beautiful e-book that will showcase the very best of the stunning artwork produced for the game. The book will be available digitally within the coming months and we want to feature YOUR artwork in it!
All you need to do is create a piece of artwork that is inspired by the Worlds Adrift universe. It should take inspiration from one or more of the game’s elements, such as floating islands, creatures, ruins, sky ships … the more creative, the better!
Did we mention there were prizes?
Five winners will each win:
– One Steam key of the full game of Worlds Adrift, as well as four additional keys for their friends
– Placement of your artwork in the forthcoming limited-edition Worlds Adrift art book
– Promotion of your winning artwork on this page and across the Worlds Adrift social channels
If you’d like to enter this competition, please email your fabulous entries to [email protected]
The deadline for entries is 26th June, 2016. Don’t forget to tell all of your gifted artist friends!
Send us your artwork as soon as you can – we’d love to see it in our book one day.
Have a great week,
The Worlds Adrift Team
