Wherever you’re at in the world, radio sounds like radio, no matter what language they’re speaking. Usually American or British songs, even in other countries. Some of it is new and some of it comes from before I was born, songs from across the terrain of my childhood. There’s a comfort in it. Turn it on and let it take you someplace. Radio sets the tone. Other times, when you’re feeling a strong mood, just keep changing the dial until it’s right. Either way, radio works on your head and on your heart.
Maybe that’s why the General was so eager to take over the local stations here in Anchuria. It doesn't sound much different now, but if you pay attention, you notice that almost all the songs are about nostalgia or being in love, so sentimental or catchy that it makes you forget your troubles for a while. And without saying so directly the news presents the General’s government as forward-minded and for the people.
Has it always been like that? I never noticed it back in the States. But maybe it was exactly the same.
