Hey everyone! We've been working hard through all of our content patches on continually improving the Cubed and Dangerous experience on Steam Deck and we wanted to collect some of the details up in a post to share with the community.
Overall, the game runs very well on Steam Deck, with fully integrated Steam Input and controls built specifically for the device button layout. Feedback from Steam Deck players has been great so far and helped shape further improvement significantly.
Steam Support
Cubed and Dangerous has been built as a Steam-First title, so it has a seamless experience between PC and Steam Deck. We added cloud save support that will sync all your game data between devices so you can continue your progress anywhere without the need to run completely different saves. Additionally, your options settings are only stored locally so you can configure your desired settings per platform.
UI Improvements
We've recently completely revamped the UI in the game. The goal with this project was to streamline a lot of the UI flow, improve the look and feel, but also to help with readability on smaller screens and resolutions. The direct impact on Steam Deck is a much easier to read interface, especially on the more complicated screens like inventory and item comparisons.
Optimizations
On PC, games can often get away with less optimal rendering setups, with average desktop graphics cards overcoming the problem with sheer horsepower. With integrated and mobile devices, constraints are much tighter. As we looked at the performance on Steam Deck, we put in a lot of work optimizing the game to support these constraints.
Since launch we've improved average FPS from 45 to well over 90, battery life by almost double and removed many sources of frame hitching and peaks / valleys in performance for the smoothest experience we've had so far.
If you want to squeeze even more performance out of the game, locking it to 60hz in the Steam Deck advanced settings in testing has gotten us close to 6 hours of constant play time.
Optimized for Gamepad and Mouse/Keyboard
Since the earliest stages of development, Cubed and Dangerous has been built to seamlessly support gamepad and mouse/keyboard controls, allowing users to switch instantly between them with automatic detection.
Being a twin-stick shooter design, the game is also perfectly suited to the Steam Deck gamepad layout. We also recently added some additional comfort features, so be sure to check out the in game settings for more.
Feedback
We're looking to make this game the best we possibly can on the Steam Deck, and consider the Steam Deck itself as a primary target platform. So if you have any Steam Deck related feedback (or other feedback) we'd love to hear it. Join our discord and help us make this game the best we possibly can.
