Dev Log 3 | Content Update Launches Tomorrow for Nice Day for Fishing! 🎣

We have epic news to share with you: we have locked in a date for our free Content Update...

Content Update: Launches Tomorrow, 23rd October! 👀

We're super excited for you all to experience our free update, which brings so much new Content to Nice Day for Fishing! This includes additions like Seasonal Events, Elite Enemies, Sail Stats, and more.

And on that note, today we have our second Content Update Dev Log detailing our new Secret Boss, using Items as Skins, and triggering voicelines for Baelin! So let's set sail on what's to come tomorrow in our latest update:

❓ Secret Boss

We’ve added a Secret Boss to the game! Only true heroes will be able to unlock him, only players with open eyes will be able to find him, only the toughest heroes of Azerim will be able to defeat him, but the reward will be worth it.

René spontaneously conceived the idea for the Secret Boss and integrated it into the game through testing. The whole team liked it, so we kept this feature in our Content Update and got to polishing the Boss up! We don’t want to say too much, but here are some hints for those who want them:

First, unlock the Boss.

Secondly, find the Boss.

Finally, defeat the Boss.

Jokes aside, there is a subtle hint in Content Update to assist you, if you are ready. As the Boss is totally optional, we just went ALL IN on the Boss’ difficulty. Expect him to be even harder than the final boss of the game… 👀

We’ve also added a very cool reward for defeating the Secret Boss, another of René’s amazing suggestions! We immediately loved this idea, but it took some time to balance the reward as we wanted it to be a reward that really respects the fact you’ve beaten the hardest enemy in the game, but also ensures it isn’t unbelievably overpowered. As a final touch, we fine-tuned the reward to add a visual effect that signals that the item is truly valuable! Can you defeat the Secret Boss and unlock this valuable reward?

🎨 Items as skins

We’ve had the idea for a while to add in a mechanic allowing players to merge items together, keeping one items’ stats and the other items’ visuals. At first, we had the idea of adding some sort of transmogrification feature when adding more interesting-looking items to Nice Day for Fishing, but we needed to find a proper balance for their in-game attributes.

We eventually moved away from transmogrification since our game allows you to only have one of each item, so permanently altering an equipment item's visuals seemed like a bad idea. We didn’t feel like this was the best way to implement this feature, given that each of our items is unique! With this in mind, we came up with the idea of using equipment as gear or as a skin, allowing players to freely choose the best-looking outfit and still retain the desired in-game stats with very few actions required.

To do so, you’ll head to your inventory in our Content Update and instead of selecting the default ‘equip’ button, you’ll select the second option to use it as visuals. This will use the skin of one item but the stats of another! This can be done for Rods, Hats, and Sails, allowing the player to choose the look of Baelin and his boat independently from the attributes of the equipped items.

Overall, we didn’t want to create situations where players would find a cool looking hat or rod and not be able to use it due to its low stats, as that feels like a lost opportunity for fun for the player! Even more, once the player obtained the best gear in the game, there is no reason left to hunt for all the other hidden items. With our Content Update, you’ll be able to hunt for hidden treasures and equip items even once Baelin is maxed out and Level 40! Just keep the stats of your best equipment, but you’ll still be able to use the visuals of that cool pirate hat you just found… ARRRR, Nice Day to Shiver some Timbers, ain’t it?

Combining this with our new sails feature and the Seasonal Event items, too, makes this a perfectly timed addition to our fishing adventure game! This means you don’t have to sacrifice your epic mage build just to wear our new seasonal items.

We’re happy that players will be able to add more variety to their outfits and boats, and we hope you all enjoy the added customization that this feature brings to Nice Day for Fishing!

💬 Triggering Voicelines

A fun and well-requested feature has been implemented in our Content Update, as you will be able to trigger Baelin’s one voice line!

Pressing [C] or the right stick [LEFT] will make Baelin say “Mornin”.
Pressing [V] or right stick [UP] will make him say “Nice day for fishin’, ain’t it?”
Pressing [B] or right stick [RIGHT] will make him say “Hua Ha!”

We read this idea from the community on Discord and Steam and immediately liked it! At first, this seemed to be not much effort to implement, but we had a few issues as we tossed around ideas of how NPCs should react to Baelin’s voice lines. However, this would totally break quests and our dialogue system.

For a bit after this, we were uncertain if this is still something players would enjoy, if it had little in-game effect. But then, when we implemented it further, we just thought it was hilarious running around and spamming Baelin’s one sentence!

There are two to three versions of each sentence, with a random version being selected and played each time you press part of the voice line. This addition has no impact on gameplay, but we’re excited for you to have access to this feature for some funny moments with Baelin!

We’re keen to see how players use this and can truly imagine some of you just playing to constantly spam “Morning. Morning. Morning. Hua Ha. Hua Ha. Morning.” 😃
