The YP-38, the second prototype of the Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter, made its maiden flight on September 17th 1940. A total of 13 YP-38 aircraft were produced; they were used for testing and training. All key innovations and design features of the P-38 were evaluated using this specific prototype.

About this aircraft
The YP-38 is a remarkably resilient aircraft: it can fly on a single engine, and its well-protected pilot is not easily knocked out by small-caliber rounds. Scoring a hit on an enemy with the 37 mm cannon is no simple task though, but a single hit almost guarantees destruction! In addition to the cannon, the YP-38 is armed with two 12.7 mm and two 7.62 mm machine guns.
