Development Blog #30

Greetings, commanders!

Today in our development blog we are going to tell you about an important change that will affect Blitzkrieg 3 gameplay soon. Many of you were worried about Assault mode, which has gradually become less exciting than it used to be. We have good news for you: changes are coming soon! But first, let's dive into the project's past and remember where this whole thing started.

Initially, Blitzkrieg 3 was a game oriented towards asynchronous gameplay.

We didn't intend to have two players on the battlefield at the same time, and the essence of the Assault was making your uneasy way towards your enemy's base.

But many of you were interested in fighting against other players, so we decided to add a synchronous component to the game, too.

That wasn't easy to add – we had to significantly rework our existing content.

We threw all our efforts at creating a new dynamic battle system that would work in Skirmish, the classic RTS mode. We also had a number of other things to do: we added a loyalty system for generals, re-worked the PvE component, and presented the new Axis campaign to you. All in all, we have almost completely remade our game.

As a result, Assault mode was temporarily ignored. You have reminded us of this many times, so we have decided to get down to updating it significantly.

You can currently only assign a small number of troops to attack or defend, so the number of effective tactics available is limited. Some players started to feel that Assault mode was too linear and primitive. We want it to be more complex and strategically sophisticated as you exercise your commanding skill, both on the offensive as well as the defensive.

So with your help, we are planning to update Assault mode, making it more interesting and attractive for the Blitzkrieg 3 community.

Here's a list of the things we are planning to do:

  1. We will increase the attacker's and defender's unit limits and reduce the rate of reserve point generation (whether a human player or an AI is opposing the player). This will let you devise more interesting, diverse defensive tactics, and it'll be harder to capture enemy HQ. The importance of creating a strong army will still be there, and a successful Assault will require even more units than it used to.
  2. These changes will affect balance, too. The Bomber, for instance, has become more powerful and more dangerous. We decided to make it more powerful after considering your feedback in threads related to unit characteristics. We have already announced that we are changing the characteristics, with reference to data from Blitzkrieg 1. You may be surprised at this, but around 80% of the characteristics in parts 1 and 3 of the franchise are the same! But this doesn't mean that the next update's characteristics will be final. We are trying to make our game as historically accurate as possible, and if you notice any inaccuracy, feel free to contact us. We will verify your information and make the characteristics even more accurate and authentic.
  3. We are planning to make the defender also capable of digging trenches.
  4. You asked us to add an option to watch replays of base attacks. In response, we are restoring this function to the game. This option will help you analyse your defense and improve and develop it so that not a single enemy can reach your HQ!
  5. We would like to remind you that you can get decent rewards for victory in an asynchronous Assault right now, as you can in a Skirmish battle. P.S. One more thing worth adding: thanks to your reports, we have found and fixed an annoying bug. This bug made the AI call in reinforcements made up of units from earlier eras. For example, if you assaulted a 3rd era base, the defender would call in 1st era tanks. This won't happen anymore.

Comrades, don't forget about the Game Barks Contest going on now!

Participating is easy: all it takes is a little imagination! Don't miss your chance to win valuable prizes and contribute to the game's development!
