Introducing the Experimental Branch (Beta 3424)

Since the launch we've been doing our best to keep up with all of the great player feedback! After narrowing down the broadest issues we've been powering through them this year. We've already overcome some major issues, but unfortunately the process of testing and fixing random bugs has taken way longer than we had hoped. We're still a little bit off from reaching our next major build, but until then we've decided to open up our testing process to everyone.

Today we're announcing the availability of an "experimental" branch for Steam users! While we're in the final stages of testing our updates, if you'd like access to the most "bleeding edge" features you can subscribe to the latest experimental build. Here's how:

  • In your Steam library, right click on Distance and click on "Properties"
  • Click on the BETAS tab
  • Change the drop down to "experimental"

WARNING: Experimental builds may change how profiles, control schemes, and level files work! Once you upgrade to a new build you may not be able to use any of those files on a previous build. You're also only able to play online with users of the same build number. I definitely recommend making a backup of your personal progress folder if you ever plan on returning to the current branch:

To backup your personal progress:

  • Windows: "C:/Users//Documents/My Games/Distance"
  • OS X: "~/Library/Application Support/Refract/Distance"
  • Linux: "~/.config/refract/Distance"

Beta Build 3424+

For this first experimental build, here's an overview of the changes. Once the build is set as the main branch we'll post a full changelog and remove this info from this post.

  • Input system revamp (i.e. if you reported an input bug this build probably fixed it)
  • The level select menu now supports advanced sorting and rating
  • Added Logitech G27 support with force feedback
  • Fixed most scenarios where the car could tunnel through objects
  • If you're updating more than 50 Steam Workshop levels the latest changelog is visible
  • Upgraded the visuals of the main menu to feature your car
  • Fixed bug that caused certain levels to freeze when restarting them
  • Some minor performance improvements

We're going to keep updating this branch as we pick off any major bugs, and we'll post continual changelogs in the Discussions area. Let us know what you think!
