Developers diaries #8

Today, let’s talk about delivery. In the original City Car Driving, this mechanics was one of the game’s two open-world activities. We’ve reworked delivery, turning it from a side activity into a full-fledged game mode.

First of all, City Car Driving 2.0 is a game about driving a passenger car safely in urban settings. As we said earlier, there will be no trucks in the game. In contrast, the game will offer a variety of vans that can still be classified as passenger cars.

In a nutshell, delivery is a mode available in the game at any time. You have to deliver various goods from point A to point B.

To get started in the delivery business, all you have to do is go to the in-game phone and choose to work as a delivery driver. You will have a list of orders that need to be fulfilled.

Every time you want to take a job, the order list is randomly generated anew, so the delivery points are often different. However, if you wish to always drive on the same route when working as a delivery driver, the game gives you this opportunity.

Each cargo is a unique resource – small decorative objects; tools; anything that can be delivered on a vehicle not designed to carry cargo. In this mode, you play as a delivery driver rather than a trucker.

Each item has its delivery requirements. For example, decorative wood products can be delivered in any vehicle. Power generators, however, can only be delivered in a pickup truck or van. There’s no room for such resources in a sedan, and it’s not safe. ;(

Every resource has such delivery requirements.

Besides the mechanics of directly interacting with vehicles, the game map has special buildings, which can be called “merchants” for convenience. Each merchant only gives out their own kind of resource.

For example, a sawmill only provides wood products. Each merchant, in turn, also requires a certain resource. For example, the sawmill needs tools to work with wood. There are also merchants that provide all kinds of resources at once.

This system will help you build a variety of routes to fulfill delivery orders.

It is not only resources that are characterized by their demanding delivery requirements. In City Car Driving 2.0, cars differ from each other more than by design and physical parameters.

Each car in the game will have its own load capacity, allowing you to adapt to each delivery order by changing your vehicle.

You will also be able to take an order where you need to deliver more goods than your vehicle can accommodate. That’s okay – you can complete the order in a few trips.

The system offers tremendous creative scope in fulfilling each order.

All of the above are mostly preparations. Without them, the basic gameplay loop in the original City Car Driving was almost the same: you deliver a set of goods from point A to point B for as long as you like.

To spike more interest, this mode is now enhanced with game modifiers. The modifiers are additional trip complications designed to create unique situations when playing the game.

The first modifier found throughout the game is the timer. We understand that for many this is an annoying mechanics: for this reason, City Car Driving 2.0 countdown does not apply to every delivery.

You will always be alerted to the order requirements. Then there is the number of destinations. Before or during a trip, the order may change, and you may have to deliver goods to several places at once.

We still recommend you to be careful while fulfilling the order, albeit in-game – each goods have their own damage scale, and while iron items are mostly harmless, fine tools can be damaged.

All these mechanics, in our opinion, create a unique system, equally educating and allowing every car lover to enjoy the game.

In the next log, let’s not go too far afield and talk about driving a taxi.
