Time for another massive demo update! As we push closer to our Early Access release, we’ve been taking a magnifying glass to the core tactical flow of Northanda Chronicles.
We spend a lot of time reading your feedback. We realized that 2-cost cards were feeling a bit too restrictive, and defensive builds weren't viable enough. So, we went back to the drawing board and refined some core mechanics to give you even more control over the battle.
New Feature: Initiative
We’ve completely reworked how you pay for cards! Previously, saving up mana for a 2-cost card felt too slow. Introducing - the Initiative system:
Shared Initiative: The party now shares exactly 1 Initiative point per turn. This acts as a universal wildcard resource that is spent automatically to cover any shortfall in a card's mana cost.
Hero Mana: Every hero still regenerates exactly 1 Mana per turn (spent only on their own cards).
Core Rework: Summon Stamina
Instead of relying purely on armor or healing cards, dropping a summon now acts as a literal shield for whoever is standing behind it. It adds a massive new layer to defensive builds and positioning.
Stamina is now Health: A summon's stamina no longer dictates how many turns it stays in battle. Instead, it now acts as its actual health pool.
Damage Absorption: Because of this change, summons can now absorb incoming attack damage for the hero they are placed beside. This provides a great new way to mitigate damage and protect your party.
Deckbuilding & Card Drafts
We wanted to make drafting feel more deliberate and rewarding, especially as you begin to formulate specific roles for your party.
Expanded Starting Decks: We've expanded the starting decks for all heroes! This allows each hero to more easily establish and build toward their core strategy right from the very first battle.
Hero-Specific Loot Packs: We've expanded the types of card rewards you get after a battle. Alongside the standard packs, you can now find Hero Packs. These new packs give you three card choices tailored to a single hero in your party.
New Tactics Cards: We have added 30 all-new Role-based Tactics cards! These are powerful strategic cards designed to help heroes excel in their specific roles.
Enemy Intent Archetypes
We want it to be easy to understand exactly why an enemy is making its moves. To help with this, enemies now display Intent Archetypes that reveal the actual motivation behind their targeting logic.
Instead of just showing a generic attack icon, the intent will now give you a clear idea of the enemy's strategy. For example, you'll know immediately if a monster is trying to Assassinate your lowest HP hero, or if they are attempting a Backstab to bypass your front line and snipe your fragile Support. It will also warn you about heavy attacks specifically designed to cripple certain roles, like a Sunder or Sabotage.
Balance & Polish
Enemy Encounters: We’ve done a comprehensive rebalance pass for all Act 1 monster and Agent fights to account for the new Initiative economy and summon mechanics.
Animations & Art: Added and refined several attack and casting animations for enemies to make combat feel more fluid and impactful. Repainted and redesigned several enemies.
Stay safe in Northanda,
