Major Free Content Update: The Tanuki Kabuki!

Tanuki Kabuki Update Overview

This major update introduces The Tanuki Kabuki Content Update, a free expansion that adds new post-game content, challenge modes, and collectible systems to Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus. Players can now engage in Boss Rush challenges, discover hidden Tanuki in the new Tanuki Tracker questline, unlock an extensive gacha-based Bestiary system and much more! The update also includes numerous base game improvements, quality-of-life changes, balance adjustments, and bug fixes aimed at enhancing gameplay flow, accessibility, and overall stability.

The Tanuki Kabuki Content Update has been added to the base game of Bo: Path of The Teal Lotus. To access the new content, players must reach the end credits of the base game and then load up the same save file again.

New Content Update Features

• Boss Rush Mode

  • Solo Mode: Replay each boss encounter from the main game individually in a Kabuki-style stage setting.

  • Gauntlet Mode: Face a curated sequence of boss fights consecutively, testing endurance and mastery of each battle.

  • Seals: Optional handicaps can be enabled to increase difficulty in exchange for higher post-battle rewards.

  • Audience Reactions: Each encounter occurs in front of an audience whose reactions vary based on performance. Audience favor influences rewards.

• Tanuki Tracker Quest

  • Added new questline located in Strange Garden. Players can locate and challenge hidden tanuki using Bo’s staff to reveal their true forms. After discovery, each tanuki can be raced in time-based platforming challenges. These quests unlock more features within the Kabuki Theater including:

    • Combat Rehearsal Room: Practice combat mechanics and experiment with various loadouts.

    • Tanuki Kabuki Band: Unlocks a jukebox for listening to soundtrack selections within the theater.

    • Bo’s Room Customization: Unlock and display various furniture and collectibles.

• Gacha Machine and Bestiary

  • New gacha machine featuring 77 collectible dolls, spanning multiple rarity tiers.

  • Dolls represent characters and enemies from the game and can be viewed in a new Bestiary menu.

  • Dolls can be displayed within the Kabuki Theater on doll shelves that function as the game’s bestiary.

• Bo’s Room Customization

  • A new player space within the Kabuki Theater.

  • Players can earn and place furniture, props, wallpapers, and decorative items by completing specific challenges within the Boss Rush Mode.

• Theater Cutscene Viewer

  • A viewing room where you can rewatch the game’s animated cutscenes and credits.

• Additional Features

  • New video setting, “Cinema Mode”, unlocks after reaching the end credits.

  • New achievements have been added for the content update.

Base Game Updates

• New Features

  • Added attack dummy that displays total damage dealt by the player at the forge in Sakura City.

  • Added a player death counter to the inventory menu.

• Bosses

  • Asahi

    • Asahi's lasers now deal 2 petal damage instead of forcing the player to reset to a checkpoint.

  • Sakura Shogun

    • A brand new final phase has been added. 

    • An older phase has been removed.

    • Fixed the zoomed-out arena camera in the Shogun fight not changing if the player falls into a killzone during the illusion change animation.

  • Kabuto Yokozuna

    • The shide sawblades in the Yokozuna boss fight now give a jump reset when struck by Bo’s staff mid-air, not only for pogo attacks.

• Gameplay

  • Extended invincibility frames for the player upon respawning (specifically during the respawn animation).

  • Removed several spike sets in the Thorn Maze of Midori Forest to improve flow.

• Enemies

  • Fixed Kamaitachi (wind weasel enemies) in Megumi Mountain (near Ice Caverns entrance) not disabling for the remainder of the room after hitting spikes in the horizontal wind section.

  • Disabled collision damage for Mikoshi Nyudo’s (Skull Enemy in Midori Forest) body and added a distinct sound effect when hit by Bo’s staff.

• UI/UX

  • Added a splash screen of the game’s key art on bootup.

  • Added Social Media buttons to the Main Menu linking to the official Bo Discord server and additional social channels.

  • Updated Main Menu layout/visuals and added icons for the base game and content update.

  • Bo’s Running icon on black loading screens has been centered.

  • Added gameplay tips below Bo’s icon on black loading screens.

  • Fixed the combo counter UI occasionally appearing in incorrect rotation. Updated the visuals.

• Quality of Life Improvements

  • Added an additional input for dialogue scrolling on controller (Staff attack input by default).

  • Added an option in the Fragile Egg quest to respawn in the same room where the quest begins for quicker retries.

  • Added an additional checkpoint near the tengu spears in the eastern Ice Caverns.

  • Added a checkpoint to the Sencho Bridge wave chase section.

  • Adjusted spike placement and smoothed collider on Castle 3F right side (zigzag laser section). Added checkpoint before the section.

  • ToRi dialogue trigger in Midori Forest Burrows Entry now triggers only once per scene unless refreshed.

• Bug Fixes

  • Fixed Jingu’s orb still applies damage to enemies if they re-enter their hitbox after initial damage.

  • Fixed player spawning off-map in Uzumaki Cave when entering the arena room from the right side and hitting a killzone.

  • Potentially fixed a rare Asahi boss intro bug causing an infinite loop in the intro animation.

  • Fixed post-processing sliders in video settings not functioning in certain Megumi Mountain rooms.

  • Fixed a rare softlock where mochi mallet platforms failed to load proper save states, blocking progress in Ice Caverns if fast travel was not unlocked.

  • Fixed rare bug where Bo loses control after pulling a Kodama if interrupted mid-animation.

  • Fixed game-breaking bug in Lower Kitsune Burrows where grappling could cause permanent ceiling lock.

  • Potentially fixed a rare camera issue on Imperial Castle Floor 1 when performing a Ken pogo skip over the right-side gap.

  • Fixed the Architect project list populating with unknown locked entries, making it look like there were more projects to unlock than there were.

  • Fixed an issue where the player could receive killzone damage during the transition from the Yokozuna Boss Room to the Megumi Mountain Summit after obtaining the Kabuto Wings.

  • Fixed a localization-related issue in the Japanese language version causing newly obtained items (such as Chomper Daruma and Kodama Charcoal) to remain visible due to UI fade-out lag.

  • Fixed an issue where the third-eye animation could persist after defeating Sakura Shogun when a third-eye Daruma was active at the time of the boss’s defeat. Fixed an issue where Kiyoshi’s dialogue could be triggered improperly after collecting all music sheets for “A Monk’s Melody” if the player interacted repeatedly during the fade-out transition.

  • Fixed a softlock caused by breaking a treasure chest and receiving an Omamori simultaneously while triggering Daitengu’s automatic dialogue, particularly when the Kitsune Kifuda item was present in the inventory.

  • Fixed an occasional softlock caused by talking to Kogi again after cleaning soot bunnies and before Kitane returned to the Armory.

  • Fixed the second eye for the exterior Daruma Shop not being filled in when the player fills in all the second eyes of their Daruma.

• Updated sprite compression that has substantially lowered the overall hard disk size of the game.
