Update 2.1 "Game Security"

Not seeing the update?
Steam doesn't usually inform the player right away of the update, they tend to wait until you restart your Steam client or until a bit later after the update has come out. So if you want to get the update right away you can do the following:

  • Right-click the game in your library and select properties
  • Go to "Local Files" and click "Verify integrity of game files"
  • The game should immediately start updating!

Servers

Because the game is running on a new backend you won't be able to see servers running on versions previous to 2.1. This means when the update first releases game servers may appear empty.

Update 2.1

This update is entirely dedicated to improving the security of the game. The specifics of the update are a bit complex on the programming side of things, but here's a rundown:

Stopping anti-kick scripts
Kicking is now more aggressive. This means now that if the game detects that a hacker is attempting to stop the host from kicking them, the server will forcefully close their connection. This is a major improvement to help stop cheaters who the game detects as cheating but who were previously able to block the game from kicking them.

Preventing DLL Injection
The major improvement with this update is preventing DLL Injection. This form of hack is what the majority of hackers were using to force custom code into the game. This meant changing the backend of how the game was built when uploading updates.

The downsides
Preventing DLL Injections required changing some fundamentals of the engine which included no longer supporting 32-bit computers. Based off of Steam statistics this is estimated to affect 1% of users.

If you're not sure whether or not your computer is running on 32 or 64-bit on Windows you can check by going to Control Panel > System and Security > System and then check under "System type":

This update's backend work also should help improve overall game performance.

Sincerely,
Blake Gillman
