Crafting is an essential skill for any moonshiner. After all, you won’t - and can’t! - be buying
your illegal equipment at any ordinary store. Instead, crafty moonshiners have to get different
parts - pots, copper sheets, coils, wooden kegs, and so on - separately and then combine
them to create a perfect spirit-distilling apparatus. Some famous folks have
their own styles and are Appalachian-wide famous for their skills! So why not join their
respectable ranks?
Of course, a distillation pot is just one of the many different types of equipment we need.
Before any distillation can occur, first we need fermentation - and pre-fermentation before
that too. And that’s the first category of crafting. Pre-fermentation lets you create a mash.
A different apparatus will be required depending on the ingredients you want to use for your drink. For example, if you want apple brandy, you need a fruit press for those apples
to make them, well, comply - and thus get mashed. And for grains you need, of course, to
craft a grain mill.
And that’s just the beginning. Naturally, the pre-fermented mash has to be then fully fermented. For that, you’ll need specific tanks and canisters. There are many different types of those, from small barrels for open fermentation to proper, proper tanks with closed decks.
But the real essence of crafting is in building state-of-art distillation apparatuses. Here you’ll choose their basis, a still, the size of which can range from a traditional basic pot to a nearly industrial metal giant.
What’s more, you’ll be able to choose the type of fuel used, as well as the type and size of the thumper keg. Thanks to that, you’ll be able to fully customize the very heart and soul of your operation.
The last category of crafting is post-distillation. The apparatuses within this category will
allow you to alter the final taste of your spirit. For example, you’ll be able to age it to fit the
palates of the more exquisite clientele or macerate/redistill it with botanicals to create new,
unusual, and exotic brews, dilute the spirits by adding more water to save, or fortitude it with previously distilled high spirits to reach higher voltage!
And one last thing: crafting is all fine and good, but you can’t do any of it without your
employees. And money. And remembering that equipment needs to be maintained, repaired,
and cleaned... And all that which a proper boss has to supervise to make sure the operation
goes without fail.
