Howdy Immortals — another update for our KIS and KAG Experimental Branches, Version 1.6.3. Most of this update focuses on quality of life changes for Multiplayer, Lobby hosting, and dual-monitor setups.
How to play right now: Restart Steam, then right-click Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns or Kohan: Ahriman's Gift in your library — Properties — Game Versions & Betas — select the experimental branch. If the branch is missing or the update will not download, fully exit and restart Steam. This update is version 1.6.3, shown in the bottom-left corner of the main menu.
What's in the update:
Multiplayer Lobbies: Hosted games should now stay visible in the game browser for as long as you keep the lobby open. Previously, a game could disappear from other players' lists after about ~25 minutes, even though the host was still waiting in it.
Hosting and PC Sleep mode: If your PC went into Sleep/Lock mode, or you alt+tabbed for too long, the game would shut down/freeze, turning the lobby invisible to other players. This should no longer occur.
Multiplayer Stability: Leaving a multiplayer match while another player is still chatting should no longer crash the game. This was a longstanding exit-timing issue that players frequently reported as an alt+tab crash.
Second Monitor and Alt-Tab: Switching to another window no longer pauses the game automatically, and the game will keep rendering even if another monitor is in focus. Since single player now keeps running in the background as well, the player must pause deliberately (the escape menu or the pause key) before stepping away.
Mouse Cursor: The game is back on the classic software cursor by default, which should fix the sluggish-feeling pointer some players reported after recent updates. If you preferred the new hardware cursor, you can turn it back on under Options -> Video -> Hardware Cursor.
Films: Films should now be viewable in different versions of the same game. Selecting a film shows which version and mods it was recorded with, and if they differ from what you are running, then the game warns you before viewing instead of refusing. Very old films may not play back perfectly, so it warns you first. A film from KIS cannot be viewed in KAG, and a film in KAG cannot be viewed in KIS.
Sound: Zooming the camera or changing resolution should no longer fluctuate volume improperly — a battle should keep the same volume at every zoom level, and sounds should no longer vanish after zooming in too closely.
New /help Command: Type /help in the in-game chat to see the chat commands and the orders you can give an allied AI — attack, defend, tribute, and more. You can read and learn how to use the full list properly by reading the “AI Commands - README.txt” in the game files folder.
Militia Stats: The militia units’ stats display should now properly include militia bonuses, such as the Garrison's +2 DV. These bonuses were always applied in combat, but their UI displayed values that were incorrect. There are no changes to combat from this UI fix.
Mods: Enabling two mods at the same time that replace the same game files is now refused with an explanation, instead of leaving the game unable to start. If a modded launch does go wrong, the next launch runs with mods turned off, so that you can get back to the menu.
First Launch: On a fresh install, the game should now set itself up for your monitor automatically — your screen's resolution and borderless fullscreen — instead of needing manual setup before it looks right.
Menu Bars: The pillarbox option is now called Pillarbox Menus (21:9 Only), naming exactly what it does and the shape it is for. It should now show its side bars correctly on standard monitors as well as ultrawides. If you pick a resolution that is a different shape than your monitor, the Video options now gives you a warning that the game will show bars.
Restore Defaults: Restore Defaults in Options now only resets the tab you are on. Using it on the Keybindings tab should no longer change your resolution or switch the game into windowed mode, for example.
If you want to play with your friends, make sure you are all on the same branch and the same version number, shown in the bottom-left of the main menu. The default and original-release branches are unchanged.

Howdy Immortals — we have another update for our KIS and KAG Experimental Branches, Version 1.6.2. This update drastically reduces the game-start loading time, adds a new lobby joining sound, and contains other additions and fixes you have asked for.

What's in the update:
Loading Time: The game should start in a fraction of the time it used to take
Lobby Join Sounds: A new General Menu option has been added, called Lobby Join Sounds. It is currently off by default, and it plays a sound and flashes the taskbar icon when a player joins your hosted game or the global chat. We will try to address enabling alt+tabbed background audio as an option in the future.
Main Menu Display: A third setting has been added to the Main Menu Display option, “Pillarbox (Menus Only).” This should help people who want to keep the Pillarbox/black bars in their main menus, while not having them in-game. Stretch to Fill and Preserve Aspect are unchanged.
Keybinds: The list now shows thirteen bindings at once instead of only seven, filling the panel properly
Cursor Fixes: The move and forced-retreat flag cursors no longer show a purple shadow or flicker. Also, Alt-tabbing back into the game no longer traps the pointer in a small area for a few seconds.
Elapsed Game Time: Opening and closing the construction menu no longer leaves a duplicated time clock on screen
Message Duration: The Message Fade Speed slider has been renamed to Message Duration. Its maximum duration is now up to sixty seconds.
Known issues to be addressed in a future hotfix:
Activating multiple mods at once can corrupt the game files/installation (potentially requiring a reinstallation of the game + deleting the mods folder)
Issues surrounding viewing old films
If you want to play with your friends, please make sure you are all on the same branch and the same version number, indicated by the bottom-left number in the main menu. The default and original-release branches are unchanged.

If you have installed any third-party compatibility software, you must remove those files for the game to run properly.
You may need to delete the game folder and reinstall — a simple uninstall may not remove user-placed files.
What's in the update:
Main Menu Display: A new Video option. You can keep the main menus stretched to fill your screen as they are now, or show them in their correct proportions. Ultrawide-screen players should notice this one most. No restart needed after applying this option. This also applies to Campaign, Scenario, and Multiplayer menus
Global Chat: Everyone now lands in the same chat room. Two players opening multiplayer at the same moment could previously end up in separate rooms and never see each other.
Mods and Multiplayer: The order that your mods load in should no longer affect who you can play with. The ordering of your mods should not create any issue with joining matches any longer.
Clearer Join Messages: If a game will not let you in, it now names the exact mod you are missing, rather than listing every mod that the host is running. If you have the right mod but a mismatched version, it names both versions and tells you which to enable.
Game List: Games you cannot join are now tagged with the reason, so you can see it before you click. Double-clicking the game in the list will now display a more detailed message for a given join mismatch.
In-match Chat: The chat channel selector now sits beside the chat box on wide screens and stays there if you change resolution mid-game.
Lightning Effects: Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning should appear properly again.
Zoom Is Remembered: Each match opens at the zoom level that you last used, instead of resetting to the default. The map editor remembers its own zoom separately.
Map Editor: The Company Creation panel no longer shows editor UI elements through it. Its bottom bar is complete at every resolution, and the unit rows no longer stack on a phantom unit in their last slot.
Various Bug Fixes: The match timer now sits to the left of the resources income bar, and closing the game during its initial launch screens should now close the application cleanly instead of crashing
If you want to play with your friends, make sure you are playing on the same branch and your version number (number in bottom-left of main menu) matches. Only 1.5.xx and later can explain a mismatch — on older builds a mismatched game is simply invisible, so those players see nothing and may report multiplayer as broken. Updating fixes it.
The default and original-release branches remain available and unchanged — nobody has to move to experimental. Saves from earlier versions still work.

DEVELOPER NOTES (Black Boxes in Menu): The black bars appear whenever the resolution you choose is a narrower shape than your monitor; the monitor itself is unchanged. On a 21:9 display such as 3440x1440 there is no way to have bars and still fill the screen, so to see them choose a 16:9 resolution like 2560x1440. That gives the thinnest bars, about 440 pixels each side, and every other 16:9 resolution gives the same bars — the shape you pick is what matters, not its pixel count. For wider bars, choose a narrower shape: 16:10 is about 568 pixels each side, 4:3 about 760, 5:4 about 820. Set Main Menu Display option to “Preserve Aspect” to see the bars in the main menu, campaign, scenario, and multiplayer screens.

How to play right now: Restart Steam, then right-click Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns or Kohan: Ahriman's Gift in your library → Properties → Game Versions & Betas → select the experimental branch. What's in the update:
Mods: A Mods screen in the main menu — see what you have installed, turn it on or off, set load order. No external launcher needed. Your mods are part of the compatibility check, so mismatched players are told up front instead of desyncing mid-match.
Auto-save: On by default, at an interval you choose, with a rebuilt save and load browser showing date and time.
Art Detail: Play with the remastered HD art, or the untouched 2001 artwork. Switch between them in Video options. Requires restart to take effect.
Clearer Multiplayer: Games on a different build appear greyed out with the version required instead of being invisible — and the crash on exit is fixed.
Zoom In/Out: Streamlined for all resolutions.
Arrow-key Scrolling: Now matches max mouse edge-scrolling speed.
Installing mods, campaigns and .TGX files
Everything goes in one folder. Right-click the game in Steam → Manage → Browse local files and find the folder called Mods (run the game once if it is not there). Drop your download in — a mod folder goes in whole, a .TGX goes in as a single file, and a custom campaign is just a mod folder like any other. Then open Mods from the main menu, enable what you want, press Apply, and accept the restart. Loaded mods are listed bottom-left, next to the build number. Nothing switches itself on, updates don't delete your mods, and disabling everything puts you back to the original game.

World Zoom
You can now zoom in and out on the battlefield, from a wide tactical view to close-up.
Units, Buildings, and Some Effects Upscaled
When you zoom in, you’ll notice units and buildings remain crisp.
Customizable Keybinds
A full Keybinds tab in Options: 15 rebindable actions across 4 categories.
HD Interface and 4K Support
The entire in-game interface now renders in high definition at any resolution — panels, buttons, portraits, and text are crisp instead of stretched. Full support up to 3840x2160: 4K in the resolution list.
There are two UI modes: Crisp (Uniform) — modern, evenly scaled — and Classic (Stretched) — the original look.
New UI Scale Slider
Options → Video now has a slider that sizes the interface to your liking, up to fully proportioned 4K. UI scale is set to 1.0 on launch, text will be smaller on higher resolutions so use this slider to adjust.
Steam Multiplayer Quality of Life
Games in progress stay visible in the browser (tagged “in progress” / “in lobby”) instead of vanishing.
Cursor Improvement
Modernized hardware cursor that moves smoothly and follows monitor refresh rate
Under the Hood
The game runs on a modern Direct3D 11 renderer (GPU-composited world, sprites, terrain, and UI) while preserving the original game logic bit-for-bit — multiplayer stays lockstep-compatible.

What's in the beta:
Windows 11 ready. The game now runs smoothly on modern systems.
Steam Matchmaking. Online multiplayer is back — now powered by Steam.
Host and browse games natively through the in-game multiplayer menu.
Invite friends and use "Join Game" straight from your Steam friends list / overlay
Global chat added
LAN and direct-IP play still supported (select between LAN and Steam in the top-left dropdown of the multiplayer menu)
Updated Minimap. You can now click or drag smoothly anywhere on the minimap to move the camera right where you point, with the full map bounds always shown.
New Launch Options. When you launch the beta, choose "Play with options launcher” to enable/disable certain features like windowed mode, classic minimap, pixel smoothing, letterbox in cinematics, etc.
Old saves still work. No need to worry about losing progress if you switch to the beta. (Note: old replays/films are not viewable in the beta but remain viewable in main game branch.)
The classic 2011 version remains available and unchanged on the default branch — switch back anytime via the Game Versions & Betas tab.

Extended Patch Notes for the Beta Branch:
Fullscreen at any resolution. New aspect-correct, letterboxed fullscreen with smooth GPU scaling — no more stretching or black-screen fullscreen failures on modern monitors.
Borderless fullscreen and windowed modes (see optional launcher mentioned above), with clean Alt-Tab (no black screen, no lost graphics when you switch away and back).
High-DPI aware — can run game on various display resolutions.
More stable in long sessions — fixes the old out-of-memory crash that could hit lengthy games/long play sessions.
Online games are protected by Steam authentication.
