Siege Engine Speed Increases: After implementing movement speed increases for mounted and unmounted units, the developers finally rolled out significant movement speed increases for siege engines that allow the siege army to reach its target faster. Read about the update here.
Increased Concurrent Siege Engine Firing: Since the beginning of Illyriad, a maximum of 30 siege engines were permitted fire concurrently in a siege. Now, a maximum of 40 concurrent siege engines firing is possible. Get all of the details on this update here.

Illyriad is pleased to announce the launch of Illypedia, the game’s first official wiki resource. Illypedia offers players a unique blend of game-oriented content, including a definitive, up-to-date knowledge base of descriptions and stats for all of the game’s units and structures, as well as deep, immersive lore entries that expand Illyriad’s legendarium beyond its in-game features.
The launch of Illypedia is the result of 4+ months of steady, behind-the-scenes work to create, assemble, and present the content in a format that is easily searchable and accessible. The site, which is built in a subdomain of the main Illyriad website, features a responsive search field, A-Z navigation, and several menu drop-downs that organizes wiki content for easy user access. Additionally, Illypedia features an extensive list of contextual internal links that allows users to freely navigate related content and interact with a wide range of topics relating to the game and its lore.
At launch, Illypedia has already published 2,666 individual entries. These entries include individual entries for:
Buildings and City Structures, including their in-game descriptions, resources needed to build and level them up, and other critical information
Game Units, including military, diplomatic, faction, trade, natural, and city-based units. These include descriptions, build times, combat stats, and other critical information.
Game Items, including all of the published game information about basic, T2, and T3 resources.
Research Information, including the research description, cost in research points and time, and research category.
Stats and criteria for things like population milestones for building a new city, terrain bonuses in combat, and more.
In addition to the basic information that governs the game, Illypedia also presents and vastly expands on game content related to factions, lore, and the game map. New content includes:
Regional resource pages that offer technical data on every region in Elgea and the Broken Lands.
Memorials and special squares on the map that memorialize significant events and players.
Local regions and places that are referenced in the lore, including new details and lore as well as their associated factions and races.
Every faction trade hub and outpost, including their descriptions, locations, affiliations, and more.
All Faction profiles and lore, with links to their associated locations on the map, default racial standings, and inter-factional relationships.
Racial info pages on the 4 playable races, as well as summaries of all the other races in the game, cross-linked to their respective faction profiles.
All Illy lore, including the creation stories of the 4 major races, as well as newly-written lore that expands on what already exists in-game, including:
In-depth character dossiers of living and historical leaders, loremasters, commanders, and other important figures.
Full texts of famous books and writings that are cited in the game’s current lore.
Info pages on rare items that exist in the world of Illyria, including their histories, physical descriptions, and powerful effects when wielded by players.
Many of the wiki entries are accompanied by one of over 1,500 pieces of new image content created for the site. The artwork was created by training our AI-powered image generators by only using the artwork that Illyriad’s previous human art teams created specifically for the game over its 15-year history. Therefore, while the new art is AI-generated, it is pulling the style and feel of the art exclusively from the work of graphics designers like GM Cerberus, who created proprietary image content for the game. We’ve used 2 different image-creating engines across the content to vary the style.
Players also have an opportunity to interact with the content by suggesting additions and edits to existing content, as well as suggestions for new entries. Clicking on the “hamburger” menu icon at the top left of any page reveals several features to registered users, including
A Google Translate feature that will translate any entry into any target language.
Any entries that users have liked.
A Suggest feature that allows users to point out edits and additions to existing pages, as well as suggestions for new entries.
NOTE: Submissions by users are not guaranteed to be published,is and their use are at the discretion of Illypedia’s editors.
Illypedia is not merely a static resource for players; as in-game content is added and updated, so too will the content be updated on Illypedia. Fresh, new lore content will also be added regularly, as well as blog articles in our news section. Players can subscribe to our weekly newsletter, which will keep subscribers up to date on all of the new content.
Finally, we’re happy to offer a fun challenge for the launch of Illypedia — an “easter egg” hunt of sorts. A never-before-seen piece of information that is not visible in the game has been published on Illypedia. The first player who IGM’s GM Jejune the correct answer on that this new information is will receive a set of elemental units (1 each of the earth, fire, air, and water elemental units). The winner’s in-game player name will be published here and in the forums once the information is discovered.
NOTE: The only way to win is to be the first person to IGM GM Jejune with the correct answer — submissions in the forums or in comments will not be considered.
What Illypedia does not currently include are guides for playing the game, player-made content (such as land claims, Faction Play, etc.), and information on past and present alliances. We acknowledge that many players over our 15-year history have published incredibly insightful and innovative guides on how to play Illyriad, and we invite the community to continue to refine those guides for the benefit of new players wishing to accelerate their gameplay.
We also acknowledge the incredible work that several players have done in the past and present to build their own wikis from the game’s content, and we look forward to working with players such as these to leverage their passion and knowledge of the game’s extensive lore.

Illyriad News Update - Summer 2025

It's an understatement to say that it's been a minute since we've updated our Steam profile. That's the bad news. The good news is that we've been updating the game over the past 2 years and making meaningful improvements and content updates on a major scale. Here's a comprehensive update on everything we've done to improve the game:
New Designers & Moderators
Illyriad's DEVS added GMs Jejune, Duran, and Malek to team, with Jejune working on the designs for the upcoming Faction AI release and lore-related content, Duran taking the lead role as game moderator, and Malek bringing his Illy combat experience to designing and updating new combat systems and content. The new GMs -- all three of which are ex-players -- have bridged the gap between players and DEVS, leadiing the game into a new era of crowdsourced, player-inspired updates and a healthier community.
Cleaned-up Global Chat
GM Duran has done a fantastic job of cleaning up GC. Global Chat is a major focus of Illy's user interface, and the community rules are being enforced so that new players can get resources and answers from veterans, with an emphasis on players having fun, eing social, and talking about the game.
Patches & Bug Fixes
Lots of bugs were fixed and things updated last Summer. We had an update in May, on June 5 and June 14, and in September. We still have a lot planned for improving and updating the UI while still remaining true to Illy's retro graphics aesthetic, but we've made a lot of strides in fixing things that were broken.
New Server Hardware
Illyriad Games LTD. made a big upgrade in seriously updating the game’s server and hardware. If you are tech-minded, you can read about that fun stuff here. One of the reasons why we did this was to vastly increase the capacity to run Faction AI.
Military Unit Movement Speed Increases
All units got a racially-inspired speed increase. We did this for unmounted units last Summer, and updated the mounted units in February. Next up are siege units, which are going to get “raceified” in some interesting, new ways.
New Faction-related Content
Faction AI is upon us. The DEVS have been working on it for nearly 3 years, and it is about 90% complete. Along the way, we’ve been launching and updating lots of new Faction-related content, for example:
We vastly expanded Inter-factional standings and default racial standings for all factions, in anticipation for Faction AI.
We re-wrote and re-launched the Eaglesbrood faction, debuting new Giant Eagle units onto the map.
In the biggest content launch in over a decade, we placed 155 Faction Outposts on the map, each with their own lore and connected to specific Faction hubs. Those who occupy Faction Outposts will receive a major ranking boost with its corresponding faction, so we’re excited about the PvP/Faction crossover here.
15-year Anniversary Content Update
Some of the biggest updates came in February, when the game celebrated its 15th anniversary. In commemoration, we’ve launched a Jubilee year and have done some exciting things:
Launched a Discord server for players, which is very popular. Y
Introduced a new “Gigantes” faction race and put the giants, trolls, ogres, and centaurs into it, separating them from being mere “monsters.”
We made the Cyclopes into their own faction, rather than just being regarded as beasts. They have new lore and will play a key role in Faction AI.
There was another major IFS and DRS update for Factions, in anticipation of Faction AI. This one was crowdsourced by the players, who came up with some great lore-based rationales.
This update is also where the mounted unit speeds were updated, so you can check out those stats here.
GM Malek also made a major, racially-inspired update on unit production speeds, decreasing the time it takes to make units.
We launched dragons into the game. We did this by rewriting the Dragonkin faction into a dragon-workshipping cult, and launching a straight-up Dragons faction. There are 5 new, powerful dragon units, as well as deep lore that goes with them. The dragons and giant eagles are arch-enemies.
We gave every active account an exclusive set of diplomatic Envoy units — 1 for each race. These will be used to boost rankings with Faction AI.
Dragons Come to Illy
The debut of the dragons is being very well received, and right now we’re having the 15th Anniversary Jubilee Year Summer Dragon Tournament, where we are giving away dragon units in the prize pool. We expanded the prize pool so that lots of players win at least one dragon. We anticipate that upwards of 1,000 accounts will be in possession of one by tournament’s end, and the tournament will generate over 100,000 casualties.
Also, any player who sends a minimum of 1 troop into combat on a tournament square wil earn an exclusive Dragon Priest military unit (courtesy of the Dragonkin). These units will have unique and significant value in Faction AI with the dragons.
What's Next?
The Dragon Tournament will wrap up at the end of August. From there, we have a string of new content updates planned through the remainder of 2025:
There will be another major Faction/Lore content update coming soon.
We are hopeful that Faction AI's MVP will launch end of year. This will be the first new, major system in over 10 years.
We'll see additional updates on movement speed, this time for siege units.
Additional, new systems and updates are coming to the combat system as well.
Illyriad is one of the web's oldest and most vaunted MMOPRGs on the web, and its dedication to preserving its sandbox design ethos is the reason why it continues to endure. Now is a great time to get into the game as we continue to support a true Illy renaissance. We'll see you there!

Introducing Regular Seasonal Tournaments & Regional Totems
In honour of Illyriad's 10-year anniversary we're extremely excited to introduce regular King of the Hill-style tournaments to Illyriad with a truly worthy reward - Regional Totems. These totems introduce further potential for long-term, alliance-level, inter-regional, military- and production-based strategies.
The Seasonal Tournament runs 4 times a year, every year, covering the entire months of:

February
May
August
November
The tournament squares will randomly move within each region at around 10 minutes after midnight (Server Time - UTC) on:

31st January - for the February (Spring) tournament
30th April - for the May (Summer) tournament
31st July - for an August (Fall) tournament
31st October - for a November (Winter) tournament
Tournament Rules
These are our signature king-of-the-hill tournaments, one tournament square per region - but with a major addition: totems.
The following rules are the same as they've always been for dev-run tournaments, and you can skip down to The Rewards section if you're fully aware of how our king-of-the-hill tournaments traditionally run.
From one second into the beginning of the tournament month, through to Midnight on the last day of the tournament month, any member of any alliance in occupation of these squares receives credit for holding the square. Occupation credit and details will be shown on the ingame tournament pages, as usual.
Credit is based on the length of occupation of each square. Time occupied by an alliance on each square counts towards the Alliance total.
This credit is on an alliance basis - individual players cannot receive rewards from participating in these tournaments.
You are not allowed to leave your alliance, or be kicked from your alliance while you have any armies present on one of the Tournament Squares.
All NAPs, Confeds etc are suspended for the duration of this tournament for any military interaction on the Tournament Squares. The Peace of the Camp rule will not work on these Tournament Squares.
The alliance that holds each individual regional square for the longest period of time during the tournament month is declared the Regional Winning Alliance for the tournament.
All activity on these tournament squares in each region will also be aggregated, so the top 3 alliances that overall have the most amount of possession across all squares will be the Global Winning Alliances, ranked First, Second and Third.
All tournament activity will be summarised on the tournament pages ingame, as usual:
The Rewards
The First, Second and Third Global Winning Alliances will receive a medal customised for their level of victory (Gold, Silver and Bronze respectively), as well as the Season and Year of victory embedded into the medal design.
However, the really serious reward here is for each Regional Winning Alliance.
Introducing Regional Totems
Each Regional Winning Alliance will get to choose a REGIONAL TOTEM - an incredibly powerful and valuable landmark that will operate until a later winner chooses to change it.
Once chosen, each region's totem provides an effect on ALL CITIES located in the entire region, until replaced.
Please note that - once chosen - the totem CANNOT BE CHANGED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES until the next regional winner of the next tournament chooses to change it.
The Regional Totems & Bonuses

Totem Name Bonus

Verdant Growth +10% Wood

Earth's Marrow +10% Clay

Ferric Flow +10% Iron

Heart of Stone +10% Stone

Cornucopia +5% Food

Inactive Totem No bonuses

So, to summarize... as the Regional Winner of any one of these tournaments, you can set (or remove) an additional bonus that applies to all cities in the entire region you won. That's pretty powerful!
There will also be a new satellite button off the World Map icon on the top of your screen, which will take you to the Regional Summary page.
This page will summarise (once the first Regional Tournament is completed) the current Regional Winning Alliance, the totem they've chosen, who precisely (in the Regional Winning Alliance) chose the totem, and when it was chosen. There will also be a link to a Regional Detail page, which will summarise the entire totem history for each region. This satellite button and link are not yet live.
FAQ
Q. Wait! This bonus will apply to all cities in the region once it's been chosen?
A. Yep, all cities - not just those of the Regional Winning Alliance. However, the Regional Winning Alliance gets to make the choice of totem for the entire region.
Q. If we win multiple regions can we have different totems in each region?
A. Yes, absolutely! Each region may have different needs, and so it's entirely up to the Alliance making the choice for each region.
Q. If our alliance wins a region, do we have to make the choice of totem within a certain time period?
A. No, you don't. If you don't make a choice, then whatever the existing totem is will continue to run for that region until a choice is made, or until the next tournament - where a different alliance might win the region, and wins the right to choose a new totem.
Q. If our alliance wins a region, who in the alliance gets to make the choice of totem for that region?
A. Any of the Regional Winning Alliance's SuperUser player accounts will be able to choose the totem for the region after the region has been won.
Q. Alliance SuperUser X made a mistake in choosing our totem! Can we choose again?
A. No. This is VERY important; the first Regional Winning Alliance SuperUser who chooses the totem has cast the die for the whole alliance - and for the whole region - until the next tournament, where they can choose again if they win, or some other winner can choose the totem differently. There's a big "ARE YOU SURE?" popup to confirm the selection. You can't come back to the dev team and say "But we really wanted X totem, this person messed it up!". That's tough luck; and perhaps that person shouldn't be an alliance SuperUser :) Choosing the totem and bonus for all player cities in the entire region is a great responsibility, and shouldn't be taken lightly.
Q. I don't participate in tournaments, why should another alliance have a say in what bonus I get?
A. This is why the totems are either neutral or positive bonuses, rather than penalties. They have to be this way, because they apply to ALL cities within the region. We don't want to penalise players who, for whatever reason, choose not to participate in a tournament. In the end, everyone either stays resource neutral (if the "Inactive Totem" is chosen)... or they get something distinctly useful, chosen by the Regional Winning Alliance. As a neutral/non-tournament-participant you get status quo - or upside, but no penalty.
Q. I'm not a Regional Winning Alliance SuperUser. Why shouldn't I have a say in which totem is chosen?
A. That's the perk of being a leader of the Regional Winning Alliance. However, we can certainly imagine different alliances may implement their own internally-decided ways of deciding what totem to implement for a particular region - ranging from autocratic self-interest through direct democracy all the way to anarchistic random choice. It's up to the SuperUser of the Regional Winning Alliance to choose the totem for the entire region by whatever method they see fit.
Q. Why is the February tournament called Spring as that seems more like Winter to me, same with the August tournament for Fall?
A. This is because the tournaments run for a month before the next Illy season and environmental bonuses kick in. So the change of totem matches the Illy seasons.
The Illy Seasons are:

Spring is March thru May; so the Spring tournament is held in February
Summer is June thru August, so the Summer tournament in held in May
Fall is September thru November, so the Fall tournament is held in August
Winter is December thru February, so the Winter tournament is held in November
Q. When the quarterly tournament is not running, do these totem squares function as regular tournament squares?
A. Yes, with one caveat... These squares continue to function as tournament squares with the concurrent suspension of NAPs and Alliances on these squares, in order to facilitate (eg) a player-run tournament or perhaps some 'friendly' inter-alliance combat practice. However, outside of the official Regional Tournament Months, players can quit or be kicked from their alliance, even if they are in occupation of these tournament squares. Please get in touch via petition if this is an issue for a player-run tournament you wish to operate, and we can potentially accommodate.
Q. Does this mean that the tournament squares are going to rotate reliably every 3 months?
A. Yes. We think this is a great idea, as sometimes alliances organise their own mini-tournaments or battle practices on the tournament squares, and we've had player-run tournaments in the past. So, having a reliable tournament schedule is important for players to know, so that they can be confident that we won't just rotate the squares in the middle of something they've organised themselves, be that battle practice, or a war.
This means that 4 months of the year are given over to these dev-run Regional Tournaments, and 8 months of the year are provided for interested alliances to run their own tournaments or combat practice on these squares.
Q. These totem bonuses are great and all, but they're pretty generic resource-driven ones. Will there be more interesting totem bonuses available in the future?
A. Yep. We're just starting with these ones as proof of concept; but we have plans to introduce different totems with radically different regional effects in the future.

Mystery/Discovery Steam Achievements are now properly awarded.
Many game window resizing bugs are fixed.
In-game music is back in. You can switch it on and off with the button at top left of the UI:
Links in game that are external to game, like forums and help now work and will open in your default external browser.
