Blizzard has seemingly jumped the gun on revealing a new Overwatch collaboration event with Nier: Automata. I've lost count of how many games the Yoko Taro and PlatinumGames universe has appeared in at this point, and it's time to check another heavy hitter off the list. Fresh off its major rejuvenation with the Overwatch Season 1 launch, the FPS game is actually going a little broader with the character selection it's bringing to the table than most do. However, you're not going to be particularly shocked when I tell you who's first in line for the new skins.

Stellar Blade director Hyung-Tae Kim has drawn the ire of Nier: Automata character designer Yoshikaze Matsushita thanks to an image the former posted in celebration of Yoko Taro's new Evangelion project. Matsushita, who worked on enemy design for Nier: Automata, is best known for sculpting the 'Emil head' mask that you'll often see Yoko Taro wearing during public appearances. He took exception to the image, which was shared by Kim to commemorate the news of the Evangelion anime directed by the Nier creator.

Platinum Games has produced some truly great action games in its time, and Nier Automata is right up there near the top of the pile. It's hard to believe it's celebrating its ninth birthday - I think another wrinkle just formed on my face... However, as part of the festivities, publisher Square Enix has revealed two exciting things. Firstly, that the game has surpassed ten million copies sold. Secondly, and most importantly, that Nier Automata will "be continued" in some shape or form.

Look, ok, I get it Square Enix. I understand why you put 2B in absolutely everything. She is a character with particular qualities that certain audiences found very appealing! But I am begging you… stop putting her in things. I'm sick to death of seeing her everywhere, her blindfolded eyes somehow still staring directly into my soul, begging me to spend money on endless gacha rolls, but this time in Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis, the next game she's set to appear in.

If you've been glued to the Paris Olympics as of late, and consider yourself a keen fan of action RPGs from the past few years, you ears probably perked up during the artistic swimming last night. That's because that the Japanese team competing in that event decided to pair their performance with a certain song from Nier Automata of all things.
As noticed by spectators last night, the Japanese artistic swimming performance was paired with A Beautiful Song from the game's official sountrack. Posted to Twitter, this was then noticed by lead singer for the OST Emi Evans, as well as Yoko Taro himself, both showing appreciation for the Olympic cameo.
The Japanese team would ultimately take home 4th place, sadly missing out on a medal by just six points. Nonetheless, it was a great show worth watching. Come for the Nier soundtrack, stay for the sports! The winners of this event were China, followed by the USA taking silver and Spain taking bronze.

Nier: Automata Ver 1.1a, the anime adaptation of the beloved Square Enix game, is finally coming back this July.
Last year saw the arrival of the Nier: Automata anime, a series obviously highly anticipated by fans of the series, but one that suffered from some serious production issues. It started airing in January, but the fourth episode was delayed by almost an entire month for COVID related reasons, and then episodes 9-12 were delayed from March all the way to July, again because of COVID. It was a rough go for the anime, but this coming July will see the return of the series with a second season (well, technically a second cour, but it's being referred to as season 2). The first trailer for Nier: Automata Ver 1.1a dropped earlier today, offering a look at the upcoming season, which you can check out below.
The new season also has a new opening theme, Black Box by LiSA, a singer whose work you'll probably recognise from the first Demon Slayer opening, as well as the theme for the Japanese release of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. It should pick up where the first season left off, which is roughly where the game's first ending wraps up, so those of you that have only watched the anime and haven't actually played the games should potentially expect some amount of repetition, given the game's themes.

Ok. Seriously, the quote even has the word 'laughs' in it in brackets, who knows what they're cooking.
Speaking in a Famitsu interview (thanks, Gematsu), NieR series producer Yosuke Saito was the one that did the teasing about the project, which involves him, director Yoko Taro and composer Keiichi Okabe.
"I’ve been talking about wanting to do something with Yoko and Okabe for some time now," Saito said, "I’ll have something a bit more put-together to say in the not-too-distant future, so please stay tuned. It might be Nier, it might not be Nier. (Laughs.) That’s about all I can say for now."

Yu Miyake, a member of Square Enix who has overseen the development of a number of Dragon Quest games since joining the publisher all the way back in 1992, is reportedly set to step down from his position as a producer on the series, after some delays in the creation of the next entry in it.
This is according to Bloomberg, which reports that Miyake will be making a move over to taking charge of Square Enix's mobile games department once he's moved on from his current position on Dragon Quest. Apparently, there are already some folks being tabbed as potential replacements, with one in particular sounding like they're maybe, er, NieRer than most.
Bloomberg cites sources as having said this move is part of a "large-scale reorganization" of the deveopment structure at Square, designed to fulfil the desire of president Takashi Kiryu - no relation to your favourite face-punching Yakuza protagonist - to make the publisher less reliant on external resources and focus more on producing in-house games that can diversify its output. Basically, he said he likes PowerWash Simulator earlier this year.

After a long wait of no news, it's finally been confirmed that the Nier: Automata anime is finally returning some time this year.
The Nier: Automata anime started last January, adapting the popular RPG into animated form for the first time, later finishing in July. It then wasn't until November that we got confirmation the anime would return at all with a second cour, but there's been dead silence from the anime's official English Twitter since then, and the Japanese Twitter appears to have just been sharing news about… postcards? In any case, there's actually some good news, as it was confirmed yesterday that the second cour of the anime will begin in 2024. You can see in the tweet below that this announcement was paired with 2B in not the most comfortable looking of positions.
Those that have played the game probably have an inkling as to what this particular visual is referencing, but for the presumably three of you that have only watched the anime, I won't spoil anything for you. Outside of that, though, details are incredibly slim. As of right now, the release window really just is any time in 2024, so sorry to those of you that are desperate to watch more of it.

Nier Automata and series director Yoko Taro appears to have been involved in what could be an elaborate tease for a third game during the ongoing Nier concert tour, according to one of the people claiming to have been in attendance. While this should absolutely be taken with a grain of salt, it feels like a rather fitting way of even having the conversation about a potential Nier 3.

You love 2B, we love 2B. Who doesn't love 2B? Well, if you consider yourself a fan of the excellent action RPG Nier Automata, and fancy giving a brilliant fighting game some love, then you'll be happy to hear that 2B has made herself a home in Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising. She is downloadable right now, as a brand-new DLC character.
Voiced by Kira Buckland (EN) and Yui Ishikawa (JP), the character is on sale right now for €7.99 / £6.49 / $7.99 or your regional equivilent. When you buy her, you also earn yourself an avatar costume of 2B you can use in the Grand Bruise Legends mode. For those on PS4 or PS5, buying this DLC will also unlock a Yorha costume for the original Granblue RPG, so keep that in mind if you consider yourself an OG fan.
Alongside this character release is a gameplay trailer, which shows of 2B in gorgeous Arc System Works style. In it, we see loads of 2B's attacks from Nier Automata recreated in the fighting game, with slick combos and stylish supers echoing back to that fast-paced and exhillirating combat that won us over back in 2017. There'e even a new version of Weight of the World, which is excellent news.

We haven't had a full on sequel to 2017's Nier Automata just yet, but the series' producer has promised more is on the way.
Come February, it will have been seven years since we had a major release in the Nier series. 2021 did see the release of Nier Reincarnation, but being a mobile game that doesn't have particularly involved gameplay, the scope of it just isn't the same as something like Automata. We haven't had a proper new game confirmed yet either, but at the Korean gaming event G-STAR 2023, series director Yoko Taro and producer Yosuke Saito made an appearance where they spoke about the game. As shared in English (but not directly translated) Genki_JPN, and initially reported by 4gamer, Saito noted that as long as Taro is alive, there will be Nier games.
It was, however, pointed out that there won't be a new game soon, as there's some kind of unclear obstruction to that happening. But Saito did also say that both him and Taro are currently working on another project together that they're hoping to discuss next year. Who knows what the scale of this project might be; both Saito and Taro have worked on some smaller scale projects like Voices of Cards since Automata's release, and Taro has worked on more than one mobile game.
