Aaaaanyway, the only reason I’m thinking about this expression is because Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit’s remaster came out today.
The new and improved version of Criterion’s 2010 racing game comes with cross-platform multiplayer, touched-up visuals and all the main DLCs, as well as 4K and 60fps on PC.
It's not so much a secret at this point, but at least we now have the finer details: Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered is coming later this year, with PC, PS4 and Xbox One getting the refreshed title on November 6th while it'll be coming to Nintendo Switch on November 13th.

There's a visual overhaul, with 60fps being the target on PC, PS4 and Xbox One while the Switch is looking to hit 30fps, while they'll all benefit from cross-platform multiplayer (a key part of Hot Pursuit's make-up, seeing how it introduced the concept of asynchronous multiplayer to modern games with its Autolog feature).
There's more besides, with the DLC folded into the main campaign, while some subtle tweaks have been made to gameplay and the front-end has had an overhaul. Most importantly, though, the core driving feels as fresh as it ever has - those pendulous slides are intact, while Seacrest County looks better than ever before. It's also a homecoming of sorts for the series, marking the start of Criterion's second stint behind the wheel of the hugely popular series.
Having spent a few hours with Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered, I chatted to Matt Webster, VP of Criterion Games, and Chris Roberts - one of the original team on Hot Pursuit who's now at Stellar Entertainment and is working as creative director on the remaster.

And today, Electronic Arts have a Need For Speed announcement planned. Coincidence? I think not. I definitely think not, actually, because it looks like this new announcement has been leaked early, too. Ahead of EA’s big reveal later today, a new rumour claims that Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered is coming out on November 6th.

You'd be forgiven for thinking this one was going to be a wreck. Pushed out with next to no fanfare and the latest of a series that's been on a rapidly accelerating downward spiral this past generation, the signs for Need for Speed Heat haven't been too promising. So it's a pleasant surprise to discover that this is easily Ghost Games' best outing since its debut with Rivals, that no-frills launch speaking to a wider, stripped-back philosophy that's quicker to get to the core appeal of Need for Speed than recent efforts.
And Need for Speed Heat understands that this series is, above anything else, a romance. It's the love story between you and your car, a love that blossoms over a series of street races, point-to-point drives and escapades with the local law enforcement. It's about how you take a stock Nissan 180SX - one of the starter cars in Need for Speed Heat - and embellish it with tricked-out ECUs and turbochargers while lavishing its exterior with vinyls and bulging fenders until it's all utterly yours.
Need for Speed Heat dials back the bullshit of the 2015 reboot and 2017's risible Payback. There's a story here, and it's as painful as ever - you're part of a crew that's up against the corrupt police force of Heat's Palm City, essentially - but it's very much in the background and entirely ignorable. You get to pick your own avatar, from a fairly generous list, dress them as you see fit (a small nod, perhaps, to the dear departed Test Drive Unlimited) and then skip through all the cutscenes as you get down to business. The bullshit that's here is mostly the bullshit that matters. Want to change the timbre of your exhaust note as you modify your ride? Of course you do, and Need for Speed Heat is more than happy to oblige.

It's set in the fictional Palm City, with a day/night cycle that plays into the racing - by day you can take part in sanctioned events, while by night there are underground street races to seek out.

The Run is being developed by Black Box, and continues the cops vs racers war in a similar fashion to Criterion's Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit from last year. However, this time around the central focus is that of 'The Run'; an illegal cross-country race from San Francisco all the way to New York City. Players will have to "weave through dense urban centers, rocket down icy mountain passes and navigate narrow canyons at breakneck speeds", whilst keeping an eye out for law enforcement.

Criterion have posted news of a new patch for the PC version of Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit that claims to fix "47% of the top ten problems reported." These mostly include fixes for players having problems running the game with Radeon graphics cards, but also include tweaks to DirectX performance. You can read the full patch details below.
Criterion announced the patch in a post on their website, listing the following updates.
"Fixes account for almost half (47%) of the crashes caused by the top 10 problems reported by our users. Specifically, crashes and rendering problems on ATI Radeon X1300, X1550 and X1800 graphics cards have been addressed. Fixes are also included for Intel embedded graphics chipsets such as the Intel GMA 500, Intel GMA 600 and Intel GMA X3000 which are running older graphics drivers."

A whole stash of NFS: Shift 2 details have been released concerning auto-log, helmet cams and, of course, cars. Read on for the latest news, along with a new trailer and plenty of screenshots.
Developer Slightly Mad Studios has revealed to Joystiq that the Autolog system that was first seen in NFS: Hot Pursuit is now 'Need for Speed DNA'. The system will appear in Shift 2 in a more-or-less identical design, but will sport extra features that will not only provide track times for unique events, but also segregate data based on quick race tracks, race types and automotive disciplines. This essentially means that Autolog will be more than just a system that throws down your friend's times regardless of how, or when, they set them during their career.
Slightly Mad also revealed that a rewards scheme would be introduced, with players of Hot Pursuit being awarded the Pagani Cinque Roadster racer and Lamborghini Reventon police car in Shift 2 when they log in.
Over at IGN, the guys have been looking at the game's helmet-cam, which puts players right in the head of the racer. More than just in in-car camera, the helmet cam will move with the head of the driver, being drawn from side to side as the car takes corners and the driver is hit by G's. As the car comes up to higher speeds, the edges of the screen will become blurred to simulate the tunnel-vision effect that drivers suffer when racing.
