We want to give everyone a update about the planned August 28 release and the future of the project previously known as Floorball League 2010 Remaster. Unfortunately, the planned Steam Early Access release on August 28 will not be able to proceed as originally announced.
The game is not cancelled. Development is continuing. The delay currently concerns the Steam release. We are also officially changing the name of the modern game to:
Floorball League 2
Why the new name?
When we originally announced Floorball League 2010 Remaster, that name made sense. The project began as an effort to rebuild and modernize the original Floorball League 2010 experience for modern hardware and platforms. During development, however, it became much larger than we originally expected.
The game now includes or is being built around a new technology foundation, online multiplayer, cross-platform architecture, 3v3, 56 Training Center exercises, My Character and persistent progression, management systems, redesigned presentation, new AI/rules/gameplay systems, modern controller support and continued PC/console development.
Over the coming months we are also continuing to replace legacy presentation with new modern player characters, animations, audio, music, arenas, content and further gameplay/online improvements. At this point, we no longer believe Floorball League 2010 Remaster accurately describes what the project has become.
We also want to acknowledge that we could have communicated this evolution more clearly as the scope grew. Floorball League 2 is now the more accurate name. There is also genuine history behind it. Before FIJOY acquired the Floorball League IP and development materials, the original developers had already begun an unfinished successor project which they publicly referred to as FBL 2. FIJOY later acquired that project, but chose not to continue its unfinished Unity implementation.
The current game was instead rebuilt on a different modern technology foundation. So this is not simply a new name created because of the current Steam situation. It is a natural continuation of both the franchise history and what the project has now developed into.
What happened with Steam?
On August 10, FIJOY contacted Steam proactively for help with the ownership/package setup for the planned August 28 launch. Our intended structure was simple:
Floorball League 2010 remains the historical original game.
Floorball League 2 launches separately as a paid Early Access product.
Existing qualifying Steam customers who purchased Floorball League 2010 receive Floorball League 2 on Steam at no additional cost.
The historical game could later become free without automatically giving all future free users the paid sequel.
Floorball League 2 already had its own Steam AppID, approved Coming Soon page, wishlists/followers and announced Early Access date. During the resulting discussion, Steam Business decided that the new game should instead be treated as a major update to the existing Floorball League 2010 Steam application. FIJOY respectfully but strongly disagrees with that classification and continues to dispute it.
We do not believe the right long-term solution is for Floorball League 2 to overwrite the Steam identity of the historical Floorball League 2010 game and move the original into a legacy branch. There are also unresolved practical problems with that structure, including the planned free-original/paid-sequel model, Early Access, different hardware requirements and allowing both games to remain independently accessible. Unfortunately, this disagreement has not been resolved in time for the August 28 Steam launch.
Why not just move everything into the old Steam AppID now?
Apart from the long-term product concerns, that is no longer a responsible last-minute release solution. Floorball League 2 has already been configured and tested around its own Steam application, including builds, depots, Steam Cloud, store settings, system requirements and other integrations. With launch immediately upon us, moving the entire production release into another AppID would require substantial reconfiguration and testing. We would rather delay the Steam release than rush into a permanent product structure we believe is wrong for both games.
What happens now?
Development continues. We are now preparing Floorball League 2 for Epic Games Store, including an Early Access release path. In parallel, we are continuing our existing Windows/Xbox development toward a standalone release in Microsoft's ecosystem. We will announce new dates only when those submission/review processes are far enough along that we can give you dates we are confident in. The Steam release remains delayed while we continue working toward a standalone Steam release for Floorball League 2.
What about the promised free Steam copy?
That commitment has not changed. If/when Floorball League 2 becomes available as its own Steam product, qualifying customers who purchased Floorball League 2010 will still receive the Steam version of Floorball League 2 at no additional cost. Unfortunately, Steam ownership cannot automatically grant copies on Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store or Xbox because those platforms use separate entitlement systems. Customers who choose to purchase Floorball League 2 on another platform before the Steam situation is resolved would therefore be purchasing it separately there.
What happens to Floorball League 2010?
For now, Floorball League 2010 remains Floorball League 2010 on Steam. We are postponing the previously planned move to make the original game free until the Steam entitlement structure for Floorball League 2 can be resolved properly. We also do not intend to turn Floorball League 2010 into a demo for Floorball League 2. It is a real historical game, not a limited version of its successor.
New planned price: $19.99
We are also reducing the planned base price of Floorball League 2 from: $24.99 → $19.99 USD with corresponding regional pricing. As the game continues through Early Access / Preview development and expands to additional storefronts, we believe $19.99 is a better entry point for the community. Our philosophy remains the same: Buy the game once and play the game. We currently have no plans for loot boxes, paid card packs, battle passes or pay-to-win progression.
To everyone who planned to play on August 28
We are genuinely sorry that this is happening so close to the date many of you have been waiting for. We announced August 28 in good faith and contacted Steam well ahead of launch specifically because we wanted the ownership and release setup handled correctly. Unfortunately, the resulting Steam product-classification discussion continued into launch week. We know that explaining the reason does not make the delay less disappointing. What we can promise is:
Floorball League 2 is not cancelled.
Development continues.
Epic Games Store preparation is beginning.
Windows/Xbox development continues.
The Steam discussion continues.
What started as Floorball League 2010 Remaster has grown into something much larger than we originally expected. We believe Floorball League 2 is now the right name for the game and the right direction for the franchise. Thank you for sticking with us while we work through this.
