It’s been a while since our last update, so it’s about time for a new content drop for Trolls vs Vikings: Reborn! And we bring it with a new 25% discount week until October 30th!
This one’s called Spellborn, and as the name suggests, it’s all about spells and magical Trolls! You’ll get five brand-new levels focused entirely on spellcasting, where timing your Zaps and Doc’s healing powers becomes the key to victory.
To make the new spell-only levels extra fun, we revisited our spike-barriers and tweaked their behavior. You might remember from the tutorials that Vikings couldn’t pass spikes without breaking them first…well, now we made some really fun new levels with them.
The “barrier breaching” mechanic turned out to be great fun to play more with, so we expanded it across five levels, and we even made the spikes healable! In one level, Doc’s entire mission is to keep those spikes alive while you time your spells perfectly to fry the Viking onslaught.
While you’ll still find plenty of challenge here, this time the focus is equally on flow and fun than pure difficulty. The result feels uniquely Trolls — and I think Thor did a fantastic job balancing it all. We really hope you’ll enjoy the new vibe and let us know what you think after playing!

Wait, what? Are we crazy? Nope — just excited. For a limited time, Kristiania’s excellent game design students get full access across the Trolls vs Vikings IP: all assets, graphics, animations, UI, music…everything. Their mission? To build their own student game!
How it works:
Part of the 3rd semester Game Design Bachelor (Game Production 1).
4-month project simulating a full game production.
Phase 1 – Pre-production: Teams of 3 pitch, plan, budget, and design
Phase 2 – Production: The class unites to build the selected concept in 6 weeks, studio-style.
Students handle coding, design, sounds, and new assets — Megapop provides the Trolls vs Vikings foundation and spar on the pitches -Students have total creative freedom — any genre, any style.
Release: As a free game on https://itch.io/.
Context: Similar projects ran with Funcom’s Conan IP (RAM and Conan the Culinarian on https://itch.io/).But this is the first time a company has gone all-in, giving students full reign.
Learning outcomes:
Working with an IP and a professional studio
Running a full production cycle
Pitching, planning, managing deadlines, and shipping a game.
Currently: there are 23 concepts → 16 → turning into 8 shortly. Final pitchround decides the winner heading into production.
So, these students are in many ways the future of Norwegian game development. We can’t wait to see their ideas come to life, we are sure they will inspire us back.

Hey everyone, hope you're all hanging in there during these wild times. It seems Loki's up to his old tricks, tempting folks to chase after gold without thinking of the fallout.
Fittingly, our first content patch, Moonstone Madness, dives into the theme of taking risks for greater rewards. When we first dreamed it up months ago, it felt like a fun concept. Now, it mirrors the world around us more than we ever expected.
A few weeks into our launch, and things are looking up. We've gathered more than 50 reviews from players and curators—many of them glowing! It's fantastic to see that those who've joined us on this journey are loving the game. A massive thank you for playing and for taking the time to share your thoughts!
We've also spotted many streamers diving into the game. Watching skilled players tackle Trolls vs Vikings: Reborn has been both entertaining and enlightening. While we might not catch every stream, we're taking notes and learning heaps as we move forward.
Sure, our numbers are very modest compared to the big hitters, but Trolls is a labor of love. We're here for the long haul, committed to bringing you updates and new content.
Now, let’s dive into Moonstone Madness, our first content patch
From the title, you see that this special mission centers around Moonstone, and pre-placed Hacks in the levels. As the difficulty ramps up, these Hacks are forced closer to the frontlines, emphasizing that classic risk/reward balance.

Early Levels: The first two are relatively forgiving, with four Hacks positioned mid-field.

Cranking Up the Heat: By level 3 and 4, things get intense. I've played through various setups and found number 4 particularly challenging, with a personal success rate hovering around 40%. But with some trial and error, effective strategies do emerge.

The Final Showdown: The last level is a wild ride. We've nudged the Hacks back a row due to the chaos, but losing any of them isn't an option! A top-tier spell and shard setup will be your best friends here.

Things get especially hairy when the Ram-bock minibosses charge in, hurling some of the fiercest Vikings straight at your Hacks. You'll need to have your spells ready and possibly some Zaps on hand off cool-down. Taking out those Vikings before they strike your Hacks is crucial. This mission can and will end brutally swiftly if your strategy isn't on point.
Our game designer, Thor (not the god, though he's pretty mighty in his own right), has woven a little story into the final level of this campaign. We're still gauging how much narrative to infuse into Trolls, but we enjoy crafting these tales, and we hope they add a touch of flair.

What's Else is Brewing:

Bug Fixes: We've squashed several bugs and will roll out a detailed list when the patch drops. This includes some localization fixes and making the 'Kill Thor before his goats' achievement work again.

Achievement Tweak: Based on feedback, notably from 先辈 dvN_ 🦋, we've adjusted the "War Without End" achievement. Instead of requiring 100,000 Viking defeats, we've dialed it down to 25,000. Still a hefty challenge, but more attainable.

Shard Rewards Streamlined: Now, diving straight into harder levels will also unlock the shards from the easier ones. If you've got the skills, there's no need to grind through the easy stuff. Another player’s feedback thing, keep ‘em coming as this obviously makes the game better (and we missed out on it).

Localization Efforts: We're kicking off a Portuguese translation, with a Brazilian freelancer on the job. Look out for this in our next content patch, aptly named "Moving on Up." We're also eyeing Korean and Chinese translations to welcome more players into our community, but this may take us longer to achieve. Regardless we shall add more languages to the Steam page itself, but we want to work a bit on a new text before those come. Tinker tinker!

Visual Variety: We're exploring new backgrounds and considering adding more Trolls and Vikings to the mix. That said, for the next few updates, our focus will be on special missions, languages, quality of life improvements, and addressing your feedback (and those pesky bugs). And probably a couple of new backgrounds.

🎉 First Post-Launch Patch!
Hey everyone! Whey! It’s time for our first update after launch. This one’s all about fixing bugs and improving screen and localization issues. Instead of waiting to roll these into a bigger content patch, we decided to swing them out quickly.
Here’s what’s included:
🔤 Localization & UI

A systemic localization update based on reports from Spanish-speaking players. Some UI screens didn’t display the proper text or language version—this should now be resolved. Bonus: This fix improves the experience for all other non-English languages too.

“Normal mode” has been renamed to “Easy”

This better reflects the actual difficulty of that mode. Nevermind that we are a game that goes straight from easy to hard, but…we can live with that.

Most of our work on Trolls Reborn has gone into Hard and Brutal, where the true juicy challenge lies. This name change is a quick clarity tweak more than anything.

And yes—future updates will definitely include proper Easy content (because variety matters), but our design hearts beat hardest for the core-gamer modes.

The Preview Panel now correctly displays localized labels on the difficulty buttons.

The Trollopedia (UGUI) now uses “best fit” for the short description field, so full text is shown without awkward cutoffs (fixes known card issues).

🖥️ Settings & Resolution

You can now toggle Fullscreen / Windowed mode and adjust your screen resolution directly in the Settings menu.

Some players on ultra-wide setups and high-end rigs (yay, flex those GPUs!) reported that the game didn’t scale as well as it should. We’ve given this some love, and it should now behave much better across a wide range of screen formats.

Whether you’re playing on a studio-grade battle station or just a solid everyday setup, the visuals should now behave like they’re supposed to.

🏆 Achievement Fixes

Fixed the broken “Mudwrestling” achievement that wasn’t registering on Steam.

Turns out, we renamed the internal ID but forgot to update it in Steam, so the game tried unlocking “OnlyBuster” while Steam was looking for “PlaceOnlyTrollFighters.”

It’s now fixed.

We’ve also added a validation feature: if you’ve already completed an achievement locally, the game will now sync it to your Steam profile properly.

No completed Steam achievements will be cleared—don’t worry.

🐛 Other Bug Fixes

DialogWindow now properly replaces []-formatting tags with correct localized text formatting (fixes dialogs like WarnLevelStartWithoutTrollHackUnit).

TalkingHeadsDialogue now shows formatted text correctly instead of raw <> tags.

Fixed a bug where pressing "Continue" in the WarnLevelStartWithoutTrollHackUnit dialog did the same as "Cancel", sending you back to Army Select instead of continuing the game.

💬 What’s Next?
We’re already working on our next content patch, which will include:

A brand-new special mission

Balance improvements for shard execution

We now have a bunch of community-suggested features and tweaks (and a few surprises from our own dark trollish minds). We definitively value these a lot. We can’t promise we can make all of it, but they are absolutely part of the mix. Keep em coming, please!

The First Week – A Wild Ride
It’s been an eventful week (it’s never quiet at an indie games studio!). We’ve been closely following the general chatter, reviews, and feedback around the game while running ads, sending out keys to curators, influencers, and press, and generally doing PR while trying to understand what’s been working—and what hasn’t—during this first week of Reborn.
On the positive side, we got some really strong feedback, and some of it has been genuinely encouraging to read (we made a video with some of the curator quotes—check it out!). True, we didn’t get a lot of sales (we’re in the hundreds of players, not thousands, so a looong way to go), but… baby steps. As a game developer, you always dream of big numbers, but reality is often different.
Still, our key goal with Reborn was to make a strong premium version of the game while pushing it into a much more hardcore gamer vein. I think we succeeded with our own quality goals—but commercially, we’ve fallen short. As expected, but not as wanted.
Why This Matters
A key motivation for us has been learning how to properly run a game on Steam—keeping it updated, working with players, and supporting it through thick and thin. Personally, I’ve worked on a lot of games over the years, and it’s often about the long haul when you have great core mechanics.
One of them, Anarchy Online, I worked on for 11 years—and it’s still doing well as it turns 24 this year. Trolls is now 11, and hey, wouldn’t it be fun if we made a 20-year anniversary for it one day? We’ll see. But what we do know is that we plan to support it moving forward!
That said, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows—we’re standing in the rainy part of the valley, watching those. 😆
What Needs Fixing?
1 Bugs.
We haven’t really seen game-breaking bugs so far—nothing stopping you from playing. And, well… some things reported are even working as intended (the classic “it’s not a bug, it’s a feature” he he).
That said, we have found and are fixing a few things—primarily localization issues, where we simply weren’t sharp enough in testing every language to bits. Thanks for pointing those out! We’ve also had a report on an achievement not triggering, so we’re looking into that. A few more things popped up during the week that we’re also checking.
All in all, we haven’t come across any “blocker” bugs—meaning stuff that completely stops you from playing. But there are more of you than us, so if you do come across something weird, let us know so we can fix it for the next player!

2 Game Balance.
Every morning and afternoon, I bike 11 km along the Oslo fjord to and from work. I listen to music, watch the scenery, and think about game balance. And, well, let’s talk about it.
Right now, most players seem to be judging the game based on Normal mode—and the general feedback is:
✔ Too easy.
✔ Too similar to a certain plant-based game (much due to that, too).
Why is that? Well, the truth is that Normal doesn’t really fight back. You don’t need to hunker down in deep strategy, manage resources carefully, or react on the fly—it mostly kind of just breezes. Is that even a problem? Well, where we’ve really pushed to make Trolls unique is in its strategic and action gameplay. But if Normal doesn’t ask you to engage on a “fight for your life” level, many players never experience that depth. That’s what makes this tricky—it’s not a visual thing, it’s a player experience thing.
During development, we discussed calling Normal mode “Easy” since the new upgrade system and added spells made it easier than before. Looking at the feedback, we’re seriously considering:
✅ 1) Raising the difficulty of Normal so that players actually experience what Trolls is about.
✅ 2) Adding a fourth difficulty – Normal becomes Easy and a new Normal is made (less likely)
For the record, Hard and Brutal mode has gotten a lot of solid feedback, so that’s working as intended!

Requests & Wishlist.

We’ve seen quite a few requests for more mini-games. Our philosophy has been to build special challenges as part of special missions rather than casual, side mini-games. But we hear you.
If we were to expand on this, it wouldn’t just be for the sake of adding "more"—it would need to really fit within the game and enhance the experience. Right now, our focus is still on special missions, but we’re keeping this on our radar. If we see traction, more engagement, and more people joining the Trolls community, this is something we’d love to explore further.
What’s Next?
We’re already diving into our first post-launch update, which will include:
🔥 Bug fixes & polish – localization fixes, achievement issues, and more.
🔥 Rebalancing– tweaking Normal mode (or renaming it Easy?) to better reflect the game.
🔥 New content update – a brand-new special mission, coming soon!
Beyond that? More balancing, more content, and continued support to push Reborn to a wider audience.
