We've been hearing from visitors to Bloomtown that there is a bit too much mystery behind the combat systems of the game. We wanted to take some time to go over some of the more technical information about Bloomtown's combat and mechanics to make sure everything is as clear as a sunny vacation day!
Let's begin with each character's combat stats: Strength, Magic, Endurance, Agility, and Luck. While in battle, Emily and the other members of her group use these stats to enhance their performance, and they are pivotal in increasing your power as you play through the game. Your battle stats are modified depending on the demons you have equipped. Any hero (Emily, Chester, Ramona, and Hugo) gets the highest values for each stat from the values of their Defender demon and the second equipped demon (which you'll have to catch and equip first). The common rule to understand here is that the higher your stats get, the better the character will perform in battle.
Let's dive more in-depth into each battle stat:
The next most important feature in combat is the Elemental System. Using demons, like with stats, Emily and her friends gain the ability to use spells in combat. Spells deal different types of damage, depending on their affinity: fire, ice, electric, wind, poison, or curse. The only other kinds of attack types that can be used are those by the heroes themselves; ranged and melee attacks both deal physical damage, and guns also have a unique type of damage.
Different demons tolerate damage types in varying ways, and it's essential to consider their elemental affinity in two cases: when attacking demons or when equipping them to your heroes for combat.
When equipping a demon to a party member, consider their elemental affinities for reducing your incoming damage. Your heroes will only inherit the best possible resistance a demon has from each equipped demon. A captured demon's tolerance to a specific element can also be changed through fusion. The following changes can be made by chance through fusion by fusing them with a higher resistance chance demon: Vulnerable to neutral, neutral to resistant, resistant to immune, and immune to absorbing or reflective (randomly). These changes can only be made step by step, increasing by one resistance level per fusion.
Next, let's discuss spells and how they function in combat. Bloomtown has several spell types available to the player: Attack, Status, Debuff, Buff, and Heal.
Here is an explanation of each of the different status effects that can be placed upon you or the demons you face:
The last thing to note is the 'Combo' damage system that comes into play when you use an attack spell on a status-afflicted enemy. Using this to your advantage can significantly increase your damage at pivotal moments in battle.

A few weeks ago we ran a poll on X to find out what character you would like to see made into a plushy if you could choose between Hugo, Emily, or the Purple Butt Demon. It turns out that people REALLY like purple badonkadonk!
I'm happy to admit that I'm also a big fan of our bootylicious purple friend, so I'm not even close to disappointed in your choice! 💜 But now we are at the critical part of this campaign. If you genuinely wish to see this callipygous creature converted into plush glory, then...
We need 200 or more Bloomtowners to pledge to the project to begin production of these rumpalicious little purple plushies. By pledging, you pay $2.00 immediately, and Makeship charges the remaining $27.99, plus shipping/tax when the production launches. If the petition fails, any pledges will be refunded. So there is no risk at all to you! 💜
This pledging stage, which requires 200 people to participate, is the most important one. Without this, we cannot enter production, so if you're interested, jump over to Makeship and pledge now!
As an additional bonus, everybody who supports us by pledging or buying the Purple Butt Demon plushie during the campaign will also receive an email after the campaign. Many of you praised the pixel art, and the art direction of the game and had some questions about the iteration and creation processes used. So while we were working on the next update that will be released very soon, we wanted to create a blog that will shine a light on the team crafting Bloomtown behind the scenes. In this dev diary, we’ll dive into the game’s art, and design.
We’re going to be diving into the pixel art magic of Bloomtown: A Different Story with Vitaly, our Art Director. He is here to share his insights on how we approach and craft the game's visuals.
So check the Q&A we have lined up for you, where Vitaly discusses and explains our creative process!
I grew up playing games like Chrono Trigger, Far East of Eden Zero, Earthbound, Final Fantasy, and Shin Megami Tensei… The list can be continued for a long time, and perhaps this whole background helped me take a broader look at the world of Bloomtown.
However, while these classics are cherished for their signature nostalgic value, their visual styles wouldn’t resonate the same way today. Pixel art has evolved a lot, embracing a "pure style"—if you can call it that; clearer shapes, carefully selected palettes, and smooth animations.
And of course, texture plays a key role. Many artists now try to avoid the dithering effect, striving instead for a cleaner narrative, at the expense of shapes and palettes—a trend often noticed in gamedev.
This approach to rendering allows us to utilize a wider range of tools. For example, we often use many different gradients and soft brushes in post-processing to subtly expand the palette and, of course, to create and achieve the right mood.
One of the projects that greatly impressed me and influenced Bloomtown is, of course, Eastward, a game that stands out by its incredibly beautiful and stylish art.
It’s hard to pick just one favorite character, but if I had to choose, it would be Hugo. Designing him was especially fun, considering the absurd transformation he undergoes in the game’s darker realm..! In the early stages, we toyed with a lot of crazy ideas for his design and combat behavior. And of course, Hugo is a good doggo!
(e.g. How did you translate their personality and backstory into pixel art?)
In general, our character design process is quite straightforward. The game designer describes the character in one sentence, and from there, the rest begins to draw itself, taking into account the environment where we meet that character.
Take Ruth, for example—she has a passion for radio equipment, and she works out of a cluttered garage/workshop. Her design naturally evolved into a tomboy girl in a bandana and jeans, reflecting her hands-on, no-nonsense personality. And when the game introduces you to Ruth in her environment, everything makes sense—it’s clear she is dedicated to her hobby, and she can be trusted to fix something.
Initially, when we conceived this project, our game director set the tone by referencing two writers—Ray Bradbury and Stephen King. My task was to create a setting that balanced the cozy, calm world of Bloomtown with its darker, more distorted reflection, the Underside, where secrets and dangers lurk.
Choosing the right color palette and post-processing techniques was crucial to avoiding a jarring dissonance between these two worlds. By expanding the palette with contrasting shades and making the render more tactile and tastefully deteriorated and destroyed, we struck the right balance.
It usually starts with the game designer outlining the location and its events. I then create a concept sketch that captures the palette and mood. I always try to make each place feel lively, filled with various little things and details, so that it speaks for itself and tells a story on its own.
For larger locations, we break down the process into initial blocking and then filling it with points of interest having various unique assets.
Many decisions are spontaneous, such as a giant kraken in the library, or the heads of giants in the abysses of the forest underbelly. I’ve always enjoyed adding some touches of absurdity and a sense of nightmare to these areas.
Of course! It has evolved significantly, reflecting how all team members grew and evolved themselves! Considering this, we actually kept an impressive amount of the old content.
We tried to minimize the visual gap between the early assets and the later ones.We also refined our approach to using these assets, and although some older demons were retired from the project, the new ones we created are far superior.

In this initial chapter, you will experience your arrival in Bloomtown, forging your first friendships, earning your first coins, and gradually unveiling the 'peculiar occurrences' happening in town... leading to fighting your first demons in the Underside.
You will get to discover (or re-discover if you come from the Closed Alpha!) the numerous and various aspects of gameplay Bloomtown has to offer - in a nutshell, a narrative JRPG mixing turn-based combat, monster taming and social RPG elements!

We have taken into account player feedback to improve combat, improve tutorial on some key gameplay concept and change some part of the story.
The Closed Alpha also helped us improve the other three chapters for us to focus on the right features.

We are planning a release on Q3 2024. We moved back the release date by a quarter from our first announcement last year. We took that decision after taking into account player feedback provided during the december Closed Alpha, to be able to provide the best possible game experience to you all!

The Demo is an early and short version of our game and subjected to change and improvement. Our goal is to gather feedback to eventually create the best possible version of the game. Before the full release, chapter 1 will have changed, meaning that, unfortunately, your progress will not be carried over.

Gamepad is recommended to play the demo. Keyboard is usable but not customizable. This is why we recommend playing with a gamepad.

This is specific to the Closed Alpha which is only playable on gamepad however, mouse & keyboard control will be available at full release.

This varies depending on your playstyle: if you follow the main storyline, it should be around 3 hours long.
However, if you are exploring every detail we carefully put in there, it should be closer to 4-5 hours.
