Hello Tavern Dwellers! We're so excited to bring you the biggest update ever to Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers - the Doubling Down 2.0 Update!
New floors:
This update adds 4 new floors, complete with new foes, events, and music!
After making your initial choice at the end of the Tavern, you will now have a second choice at the end of VIP Area and Casino.
After VIP Area, choose between the existing path through Head Office and Hope, or a new path through Laboratory and Apathy.
After Casino, choose between the existing path through the Dungeon and Despair, or a new path through Surveillance and Anxiety.
Lucky Charms:
Lucky Charms are new items that are collected during your run that have permanent, always-on effects. You'll be given one at the start of Jack's Tavern, then one in the middle of each floor after the Tavern. As you go, they'll be added to your Collection.
Bosses will also have Lucky Charms at Double Down! and higher difficulties.
(These are just a few of the 50+ charms you'll come across!)
High Stakes:
After winning at least one run you'll unlock High Stakes, which is a new mode that lets you twist the existing rules of the game by starting a Daily or Custom run.
Daily Runs - a randomly chosen deck, and three randomly chosen modifiers
Custom Runs - choose from a list of modifiers, and input your own seed
New cards:
Gift Card
On play: -3 value, then give a ??? to your draw pile.
On discard: if value is 0 or less, lose 10 chips, set value to 10, and permanently change the gifted card to ???.
Railroad Card
On pickup: lose 250 chips.
On taking damage: gain 10 chips. Repeat for each Railroad Card you currently have.
Steam Trading Card
On play: +1 token. If there are at least 5 tokens, burn, and add a Foil Booster Pack to your hand.
On discard: steal 1 chip from your foe, and discards to foe's discard pile.
New Unique Chip:
Bag of Chips
Start with 1 (0 at Double Down!) Advantage.
On stand: randomly gain between -1 and 2 Advantage.
Reworks:
Chip in a Bottle
On spending chips out of encounters: gain 2 (1 at Double Down!) Advantage. Advantage persists between encounters.
Vaccination Card
On taking damage: add 1 token.
On stand: gain 3 shield per token and remove all tokens.
Treasure Vault
On gaining chips: add 1 permanent token.
On winning with max score: if there are at least 5 tokens, remove all tokens, and count all Diamonds as Everything for this blackjack.
Collection overhaul:
Adds Lucky Charms and Unique Chips to the collection
Updates the art for the completion badges
Adds collection bookmarks for quicker navigation
Adds a more detailed stats page
Some extra collection toggles:
Toggle showing your collected Foil cards
Toggle showing the highest difficulty sticker, or difficulty stickers for each of the four paths
Toggle showing card progress stickers outside of the collection (that's right, you can hover cards to see their completion stickers during a run now!)
New unlockable ID Card customisation options:

Balance changes:
Decks
Adds a Joker to Black and Red Decks
Birthday Deck now starts with 2 candles for D&DG's second birthday!
Cards
Reduces the damage multiplier of XVIII The Moon and The Moon XVIII to 2x (was 3x)
Card Number 52's suit is now Diamonds
Insurance Card's suit is now Diamonds
Bat Credit Card's suit is now Spades
Changes Kingmaker to make it not able to "downgrade" special Kings into standard Kings (similar to Justice VIII)
Changes Kingmaker to ensure that if it is changing a King it will change that King into a new King
Prevents Break Limits from being able to target cards with values of 999 or -999
Changes Terminate the Tower requiring using each option once this encounter before offering all 4 choices again
Changes Lockpicking Card to unlock On Stand
Lucky 7 now sets its value to 7 On Play
Changes Library Card to charge you 5 chips On Stand rather than when the borrowed card was discarded
Buff Wish to be twice as likely to succeed and also have a minimum success chance of 33%
Unique Chips
Bargaining Chip now costs 21 chips at DD+ (was 15)
Chip Off the Old Block now starts with 0 (-1 at Double Down!) Advantage (was -1/-2)
Floors and Events
Adds additional foes to the pools for existing floors
All easy and hard pools now have 4 options each
Shops can now appear in all floors (except the Tavern) after the second encounter
In the Tavern, shops will appear two encounters before the Manager
Shops are now always offered in pairs
Add one more hard encounter slot to VIP and Casino to make them the same length as other floors
The Secret Passage event no longer takes up an encounter slot
Three Card Monte now appears in the Casino instead of the Lounge
Lounge had too many events, and Casino not enough
The Surrounded event is now Cornered and has moved to the VIP Area
Dungeon had too many events, and VIP Area not enough
Adds a "keep neither" option to the Layoffs event
Foe changes:
Changes marked with QD+ only affect runs at Quadruple Down! or ALL IN!
Changes marked with TD- only affect runs at Play it Safe, Double Down! or Triple Down!

lots of changes to make swapping between input methods (mouse, keyboard, controller, touchscreen) seamless.
16:10 and borderless fullscreen
adds support for 16:10 aspect ratio .
Please only use this if you have a 16:10 monitor or are in windowed mode.

Foe Balancing
Alucard (Triple Down! and below)
Replaces Ace of Hearts with 1 of Hearts.
The Ace was too consistent a source of both value and healing in long encounters.
Bouncer (Triple Down! and below)
Replaces King of Clubs with King of Hearts.
This makes him deal less damage when affected by Rules Card/Sweep the Leg, and also makes him susceptible to disruption via Blood Donor Card.
Mr President
Swaps the normal deck and Quadruple Down! deck for Mr President.
In the new Quadruple Down! deck: makes the 10 of Diamonds a 6 of Diamonds and the 6 of Hearts a 10 of Hearts.
Previously the normal deck was harder since the Blood Donor Card would eventually drain Hearts to 0 leaving it with a low deck sum.
Other improvements
changes the order that things are moved into position at the start of encounters, this makes the draw piles enter the screen smoother and at the same time, as well as slightly reducing the total time spent moving things into position.
improves the responsiveness of input glyphs on draw and discard piles when the last card moves out of them.
when trying to play Official Trump Card while not having enough chips the error message will now be "not enough chips" instead of "no valid target".
makes the cards shown while previewing a starting deck hoverable.
improvements to mouse and keyboard navigation of draw pile when foresight active.
improves keyboard/controller navigation on the settings page.
increased speed to move between cards by holding down a directional navigation button.
performance improvements to the speed of creating cards, and the time to get into game after pressing New Game or Continue buttons.
Bug fixes
fixes a bug where interactable Unique Chips could be interacted during card effects which could lead to a softlock.
fixes a softlock caused by more than one Fingerprint Card trying to exploit the same Fake ID.
fixes a softlock caused by the foe having a Foil King of the World and at least one more Foil Face card.
fixes a bug where Diamond in the Rough could set shields to briefly be negative.
fixes a bug where VIII Justice and Justice VIII would not transform Glitched Cards that had rolled Jacks.
fixes a bug where the preview of a discarded The Agile Agenda would show the wrong number.

In v1.4.1 we made a change to the engine render mode to better support older devices, but this introduced a new rendering issue where the screen would be displayed black other than the mouse cursor. So we're changing back to the same renderer that v1.4 used, and anyone that has the "white screen" bug that was in v1.4 can now swap render modes by putting "--rendering-driver opengl3" (without the "") into the launch arguments for the game in Steam.
Damage sound effects
these have been simplified and made to be much more natural, especially the sound effect that played on dealing 21 or more damage.
ID Card Customisation
the fingers are now shown in greyscale when choosing to have no right hand accessory in the ID Card Customisation menu, to make it clearer that the fingers will not show during a run if you choose this option.
Bug fixes
fixes the Shields in Spades achievement not working.
fixes a bug where Glitched Card would not update the choice helper text for some cards.
fixes a bug where the new foil map wouldn't display correctly for Flash Card when exploited.
fixes a bug where a card dealt to player's hand could be shown facedown in Go Fish event.

changes the no smoking setting to only visually prevent smoking but still leave the cigarette as selected customisation if it is selected - means you can swap the setting back and forth without having to also change the customisation
Foresight changes
Make the foreseen card more visible by:
reducing the opacity of the purple mask
increasing the size of the preview, especially in top left and bottom right corners
reducing the opacity and value of the eye background colour
Go Fish changes
Improves Go Fish event to be a more consistent reward pool and to not be so confusing as to what is happening on-screen
More consistent reward pool:
get first set of cards from player's deck
get second set of cards from Gamblers decks (pooled from Tavern, Lounge, VIP Area)
reduce to 8 pairs in total and 4 cards held in each hand
Not so confusing:
move cards to a discard pile on the right side of the event instead of burning them
change mid-event dialogue to show the full message immediately which helps a lot with the timing of the event
tweaks to the order of moving cards around to make the event more readable
move first cards from owner's deck positions instead of dealer position to make it clearer where they came from
better timing to show event description label
better text and layout for event description label
better draw pile visuals and prevent the player from viewing the draw pile with "no peeking" dialogue and error sfx
Cool stuff:
show the customised hand and accessory in Go Fish
improve the way cards in hand are spread in Go Fish

We're very sorry for wasting your time and delivering a frustrating experience on what was supposed to be a fun celebration of 1 year of D&DG. We feel we have let down our international players who were excited to play the Anniversary Update. We can only apologise, and we'd like to explain how this happened and what we are doing to avoid these kinds of issues in the future.
v1.3.4 -> v1.4
In this update we upgraded the engine version from Godot 3.6 to Godot 4.4.1. The upgrade was major (it took us 2 full days of work to even get the game to successfully launch!) and in particular the whole font and theming system was changed and we had to rewrite the way that D&DG changed languages.
One of the complications of D&DG being a pixel art game is that we need to be able to swap fonts depending on your language. For example fonts with accent characters, or Chinese, Japanese, or Cyrillic characters all need to have specific fonts to make sure text stays pixel perfect and readable. The system to swap fonts depending on language like this is called "remapping".
After the upgrade to Godot 4 the default export setting meant that these remapped fonts weren't being correctly exported to the version that you play on Steam. This was the reason why in v1.4 the fonts displayed wrong, or at the wrong size.

We changed the export setting which meant that all the fonts and their remaps were correctly being exported!
At this stage if you launched the game on a computer with English as the system language you could swap between all languages and all of the fonts displayed correctly. You could also launch the game in (for example) Spanish if your system language was Spanish.
But the export now working exposed a problem where we were still using the old Godot 3 remapping system for two of the fonts. Now that the fonts and remaps were being exported, this collision of two different remap systems caused the game to crash when you swapped to English if the game had started in another language (like it would if your system language wasn't English).
v1.4.1 -> v1.4.2
This update fixes the issue by changing those two specific fonts to be remapped the same way as all other fonts.
Our learnings for future development
We had done extensive in-editor testing in all the supported languages during the development of v1.4, but the remap issue in v1.4 was only appearing in the exported version (not the in-editor version) since the problem was caused by incorrect export settings.
What is now clear is that we needed to be doing as much play testing as possible on the exported version (the version players will get on Steam) rather than in-editor. We'll ensure that this happens for all future updates so that we don't cause these types of problems again.

Fixed a bug where a card could be shown facedown even though there wasn't a XVIII The Moon or The Moon XVIII in play
Fixed a bug where the Dealer had the wrong name set in the 8 card shop
Fixed a bug where clicking the draw pile during the shuffle animation would crash the game
Fixed bugs with the choose next floor screen leaving a semi-transparent layer on top of the game in some cases
Fixed a bug where some chip counts were being rounded incorrectly
Fixed a bug where language translations were not being exported by the engine correctly, which resulted in non-English fonts being displayed incorrectly
We've also pushed an update to the official soundtrack that fixes the tracks being out of order and the final track not playing.

Godot 4 upgrade
We’ve upgraded D&DG from using Godot version 3.6 to using version 4.4. We’ve done this for a few reasons:
Make console ports easier
Get updates to the engine as they come out (Godot 3 is being updated much less than Godot 4) means the game is more future proofed
It’s just such a nicer engine to work in!

In that time we’ve been working hard to make the game the very best it can be, and this update is another big improvement. It adds anniversary celebration cosmetics, a new Tarot deck, 10 new cards, a ton of improved animations, balance change, and changes to the game’s music.

The music has all been rebalanced and remastered, as well as volumes being rebalanced across the board to be more consistent.

You can swap between Alternate and Original in the settings menu.
There is now new music that plays after the boss but before the elevator, including a special track for the Fortune Teller.
QoL Improvements
Event tooltips now better highlight chip and health costs and show tooltips for card descriptions when cards mentioned in event tooltips (e.g. Card Printer giving Misprinted Card)
Add a restart run button to the pause menu
Removes holding right thumbstick to restart the run (was causing issues for Steam Deck users using the right trackpad)
Allow the Stand hotkey (keyboard Enter, gamepad West) to make card selections as well as the Interact hotkey (keyboard E, gamepad South)
Adds an option to the settings menu that lets you turn on Stretch Pixels to Fit when in fullscreen. For some monitor sizes still will allow the game to take up more of the screen, and gives the pixel persists the option to keep everything on Pixel Perfect mode.

Fixed a bug where King of Space and Time would not trigger its effect if a foe played it, even if they had a Jack in play
Fixed a bug where very large numbers from ID Card could get hidden under the Score Card
Fixed Trade Offer to use the correct card back customisation when collecting remaining player cards on event end
Fixed a bug where when using controller or keyboard the left choice of next encounter or event would sometimes not start hovered
Fixed a bug where you could softlock during a choice by using the peek button at the wrong time
Fixed the initial peek button position being different to its position in subsequent choices
Fixed a bug where changing from mouse/touch to keyboard/controller input could leave things incorrectly hovered
