Hey there everyone 😊 Following the launch of Critter Café at the end of last year, the game team wanted to share a short article with you on our first post-launch update.
Firstly, a massive thank you to everyone for your support so far on Critter Café. It’s still incredible to see something that began life as a game jam prototype now available to the world, and enjoyed by many people. We’ve loved seeing your stories, journeys, and thoughts on the game, and look forward to seeing more!
We’re pleased to confirm that an update for Critter Café is planned to be released, simultaneously on Steam and Nintendo Switch, early this year. This update will focus on adding a handful of changes and options that our players have requested, either to improve the overall experience, or to further assist with accessibility. There will also be technical fixes to improve performance on all platforms and devices.
Further assistance and guidance will be added in some areas of the game, including with Bookings, how to complete certain challenges, and with selected puzzles that our community highlighted as particularly difficult. Critter behaviour in the café during ‘Open for Trade’ shifts is also an area we plan to address, aiming to make them more lively around customers, whilst ensuring they no longer impede the player’s movement around the café.
Also, we’re looking at adding toggle options for multiple actions that currently require the player to hold down a button or key, as well as more player choice for camera and cursor speed when customising spaces.
Work on this update is ongoing right now, and it’ll take a little time to finalise the changes and go through the required processes for updating on both Steam and Switch. Once everything is ready, we’ll share a confirmed release date, along with full patch notes.

Featuring a Critter Café-inspired environment brought to life in the Lofi Girl style, this official collaboration stars a remixed version of the overworld music from Critter Cafe's Emerald Bay location. Fans should keep an eye out for some of their favourite Critters in the video, from a sleeping Mogbert to a very energetic Luvhen, alongside a wealth of other Critter Café Easter eggs to spot among the furniture and decorations.

When Critter Café opens its doors on November 26 for Steam and Nintendo Switch, your very own café will be at the centre of a cosy, magical journey. But what good is running a café if it’s never open? Plus, how can you make sure you're serving the best possible eats and treats to your customers? In this post, let's take a closer look at how to run your café, so it operates as nicely as it looks!
When you decide the time is right for your café to be open for business, head over to the register at the back right of the café. Select the Critters who’ll accompany you on your shift, and get ready for some eager customers to arrive. Once you're Open for Business, you'll have a set amount of time to fulfil orders from folks in your café.
Customers will raise their hands for attention, and it’s your job to take their order and fulfill their wishes with the following mini games:
Pouring coffee!
Fill the cup of coffee up to the line for that perfect cup of joe.
Deliver treats!
Remember the customer’s request and bring them food in the correct sequence.
Latte art!
Match the button presses to finish drinks with an artistic flourish.
Cake slicing!
Cut slices of cake to match the requested portion size. Make mine a large one!
Every shift is ranked out of three stars. Master these mini games and you’ll delight your customers. But don’t worry if you don't get things exactly right: while your final rank determines how much EXP you earn, there’s no punishment for getting any orders wrong, and customers will be eager to come again the next time you open your doors.

Your magical journey in Critter Café begins – and centres around – your very own café. This lot of land on Gold Leaf Isle has potential, but needs plenty of TLC to turn it into a beautiful place to enjoy treats and tipples.
From the very start of Critter Café, you’ll have the chance to design the café in your own image – and the more you play and progress, the more options for customisation and beautification you’ll discover.
Furniture will be critical to your café’s layout, as you provide customers with comfy and cosy places to sit. Choose between different table and seating options – some for 1-2 customers, and some for larger parties – with different styles and colours to pick from. Opt for an open social space with long tables and stools, or create small and secluded nooks for solo customers to get comfy. Go for a consistent theme throughout the café, or mix and match your tables, chairs and colours – the choice is yours.
Transform the aesthetic of your café by changing your wallpaper, placing pictures on the wall, and using lamps and lighting. Definitely make sure to switch out your curtains when you get into the café – the old ones look a little ragged. You can even place toys for Critters in the café, such as scratching posts and little shelters!
Remember – your options for customising your café will increase as your Critter Café journey goes on. Keep progressing, levelling up, and look out for ‘blueprint’ cards scattered throughout Gold Leaf Isle, to unlock new options on your way to designing the dream eatery for you and your customers.
Finally, you don't have to pay to select or place any items. You're free to completely revamp your entire café at any time, without any restrictions. Make a new style for every season, perhaps?

Once you’ve completed a rescue, you should head on over to Critter Café’s Habitat to meet up with your new pal.
The Habitat is where all your Critters reside. You can explore it to find your favourites, or use the bell by the entrance to call them to you. This is where you’ll see who is available to assist in your Café for the next shift.
In the Habitat, you’ll also be able to play with each Critter, pet them, and feed them treats. These options will open and diversify, the more that you progress. Feeding Critters will replenish their energy levels if they’ve been busy at the café, ready to join you again to delight more customers on the same day, and to boost the experience they gain from activities.
Here in the Habitat, you can also adjust your Critters’ appearance. You’ll unlock different visual options for each Critter when you increase your bond through play and activities. Become 'Best Friends' to access a very special look!
Just like your café, you can fully customize the Habitat to make the perfect home space for you and your new best friends.

Critter Café is home to a wide variety of Critters, but you won't find all of them at your café from day one. That's because they've been trapped inside mysterious portals throughout Gold Leaf Isle, and it's up to you to rescue them!
Once you've earned a potion through managing your café, you'll be able to head out into the world and use that potion to open a portal. After leaping inside, you'll find yourself in a mysterious new area, with a whole new aesthetic. Think purple skies, ancient ruins, and twisting vines – not quite as cozy as the café!
To save the Critter within, you'll need to solve the portal's puzzle. Anyone who has played our Steam Next Fest Demo will know that some of these puzzles involve pushing blocks to clear paths and create bridges. They might seem simple at first, but they can get pretty fiendish over time. Expect new conundrums to overcome and progressively harder puzzles to unpick.
You'll also have some tools on hand to help you navigate the portals. One key tool is your hammer, which can smash through amber that blocks your path. Perhaps you'll even find temporary power-ups for your hammer to help get through more troublesome problems. The more you play and progress, the more tools and useful additions you'll discover.

The first area you'll travel to is Honeycrisp Grove, a lush green area full of cozy delights. Take a stroll through the beehives in the apiary, check out the apple trees in the picnic area, or get your steps in running around the fountain. If you get lost, there are signposts all around to direct you, or you can always check your map and see where you need to head next.
Honeycrisp Grove is also hiding a few secrets for those willing to explore a bit further! Rumour has it that new pieces of furniture for your café and habitat – as well as new clothing items for character customisation – can be found on cards scattered around the world. Make sure to find them all!
Potions are your key to uncovering the mysterious, puzzle-filled portals that Critters are trapped within. Once you've earned some potions at the café, you'll need to head to the wider world to find the portals. We think we saw a portal up by the fairy ring in Honeycrisp Grove... maybe you should check it out when you get a chance?

You can change everything from your hairstyle and eyebrows to your clothes and accessories. Nothing is tied to a particular body type – every player can use whatever combination of items they like. Plus, new customisation items can be found by exploring the world outside of the cafe, so if you want to spruce up your wardrobe, go for a walk around!
Not happy with the default colour of your clothes? Every item of clothing has a variety of colour options too, so you can completely customise your entire style. Whether you want to look sleek and stylish, cute and colourful, or something totally out there, the choice is yours.

When you start Critter Café, you'll have just moved to the beautiful Gold Leaf Isle. Spurred on by some local pen pals, you start with a café that could do with a little bit of TLC. But it's not long before you'll discover a mysterious potion capable of opening strange portals, and meet your first fantastical critter...
From there, it's up to you how your story plays out. Maybe you want to focus on improving your café, making the best possible layout inside – or just the cutest café possible. Maybe you want to hang out with your critters and build up their bonds. Or maybe you want to explore more portals and save more critters. It's up to you!
Everything you do in Critter Café helps with your other activities. If you don't have any more portals to explore, try working in your café and bonding with your critters to unlock more potions. Mix things up every once in a while to fully enjoy your time in Critter Café!

To make sure more people have a chance to experience the game, we've decided to keep the demo live and available on Steam, right the way up until launch day!
If you're yet to play, and want the chance to run and renovate your own cute café, whilst rescuing and building bonds with even cuter Critters, now is your time. Or, if you've been playing the demo and just wanted a little longer to explore, customise and get to know your new friends, now you can!
