Work, family and health have been keeping me away from game development, but I've finding time here and there to work on different things.
I began working on the Dark Queen, animations and attacks. In the original boss battle I had planned, she would have two forms, an older witch and a younger warrior, and I already had a concept for her, and she was going to look in a way that would show the corruption of the obsidian she is using (skin color and overall look). However, I changed it a bit, based on the original idea. She will have two or maybe three forms, and my plan is to make them "overlap" in certain situations. I am not sure what visual effect I will use, so I will have to try different things. This will be her "default" form (still making some adjustments).
Another thing is that I want this one to be "cooler and very end-game-ish" to set it apart from the boss battles you will face up until that point. Since, according to the lore, she is the first "user" of the magical obsidian, but the way she uses it makes her more powerful than the Dolls, and I am looking for ways to show that in the game besides a big health bar and attacks that reduce a lot of HP.
Additionally, I finished work on the gang-bosses, and I am testing it and refining it. They now have a very cool two-on-one attack that I will let you discover when you fight them.
Now I still need to figure out the music part of the game... Unfortunately I don't have money for composers, so I will be following that route, and I won't be using AI-generated music either.
And that's it for now. More updates as they become available.

Hello all and happy new year!
It's been a little while since the last update but I am still alive, and I bring a new demo update. The update was supposed to go live in late December but it was not possible to do it.
This demo update is not changing anything in the game itself, but adds a couple of new things. First, it now uses updated models of Moni, the playable Doll in the demo. This new model has better textures and a different hair style.
This is how she looks in game:
This new model can show wrinkles on certain facial expressions.
This update also fixes an issue with the new options menu, where you couldn't change the volume of the music.
Work on Killer Dolls Dark Abyss continues. I have been working on a "boss duet". A boss battle where you have to face two enemies at the same time, and they will even combine to perform very brutal attacks.
There's been more work done in the game and I will post more updates soon.

Hello.
There's a new demo update with the game updated to Unreal Engine 5.6. The demo itself doesn't change anything when it comes to content, but I made the update because some people were having some issues that seemed to be related to the UE version I was using (5.3).
And now, here's a picture of Pame for no reason.
Now I will work on making some changes to the demo level, and also see if I can make some upgrades to the Dolls, since I upgraded my character creation software to the latest version (Reallusion CC5). This new version has some interesting features but I don't know if they will translate well into Unreal Engine. Hopefully they do. I also need to change Cami in the engine (because this demo still uses her old version), but since I need to change Cami and add the rest of the Dolls, I am just going to change all the Dolls to the latest version.
Sorry for the lack of updates. I was updating the game to UE5.6 but the upgrade caused some compatibility issues that I am fixing. I hope I can fix those issues soon so I can continue with my work. In the meantime, here's a couple of pics of Pame, the youngest of the Dolls.

Hello. It's been a few months since the last update, but here's some new things to show.
First, Cami has gone through some outfit changes. While the outfit is different to the original one, it has a similar style and it's also very sexy.
I also have Vale's final outfit. It has a similar style to Cami's although the colors are different because she's "The Daughter of The Moon", and also it's a bit more revealing because she's a bit more "show-off" so to speak, while Cami is a little more shy.
I think the picture below illustrates their differences in personality.
Another one that has had some style changes is Pame, although I don't have her final outfit yet. Pame is the youngest one, and according to the lore she has just finished her training and appointed as a Doll. This is not her actual outfit. It's just something quickly put together that somewhat resembles her final outfit.
Moving on to gameplay things...
One thing I have to show is some attacks from the gang enemies. Although I have regular attacks, this time I wanted to show some very brutal team attacks.
Another thing is "mini-bosses". In various levels there's going to be mini-bosses guarding certain areas. These don't exactly behave like bosses, but behave different than normal enemies. The biggest difference is the shield. You can see more in this video.
Lastly, here's a preview of one of the techno-gang bosses. That's the boss battle I am making right now. For that battle there's going to be 3 bosses, and my idea is that they will do "tag-teams" to attack you. These tag-team attacks are not like those by regular enemies. I want those to be cool, for example that they throw you around and catch you to attack you. We'll see how it goes. My plan is to make that battle very difficult and to make them brutal.

Hello.
There is an updated demo that you can test out. This demo makes various changes and improves different gameplay related things.
The most obvious change is Moni's new hair. After doing the preview of the new Dolls (Pame and Vero), I realized their hair looked way better than Moni's and Cami's. I decided to go back to those two and improve the hair quality for them too. This is a small change and is purely eye-candy, but I think it's worth it because a lot of work has been put into making the girls attractive, and this improves their overall quality. You can see Moni's new hair below.
While Cami is not playable in the demo, she shows up as one of the captured Dolls (context: Dolls become playable as you rescue them in the game). You can see Cami's new look below:
On a side-note, it's going to be cool to see Cami next to her twin sister, because, not only they will have different make-up styles, they will have different hair styles.
The HUD has been updated to reflect Moni's change. The HUD also includes pics for Cami and Ceci, but they are not visible since they are not available in the demo.
Keys and locked doors can be associated now, because they now have medallions, rather than using a generic model.
Moni's moves are also updated. She now moves a little bit forward on every slash of her combo, and has two differend "end-attacks" for the combo, a strong slash that causes knock-back, and an uppercut slash that sends her, and the enemy, upwards. She also can perform the air combo, and link the air combo to a stomp attack.
The stomp is also faster. She is launched down to do the stomp a lot faster than before.
Overall, these changes can open a couple of nice combat tricks. Other Dolls will have a similar style, at least the ones that use a melee weapon. Cami will be different, as she uses the orb, and her combat style is very different to Moni's or any other Doll using a melee weapon.
The first one is a "chest pain" state that usually happens with a boss strong attack, when a Doll is slammed against a wall. This one doesn't really cripple her too much, as she can still jump, but the dash is limited. The second one is a "lower-belly pain" state that happens when the Doll is targeted on her lower-belly area, and this type of attack disrupts her magical link to the weapon, so she can't perform magic attacks, and she can't jump, but still has a limited dash. There's a third pain state, which doesn't show up here, and acts like the lower-belly pain state, and I'll leave it to you to guess what it is.
Time for some quick lore. I don't know if this has been explained here before or only on X and Patreon, but, in any case, I am explaining again. The weapons used by the Dolls are called "Nishumas" and are made with some "magical obsidian." Only women can use the magical properties of the weapons, because the weapons detect a woman's life-giving power (fancy way of saying "ability to give birth"), and then link to that power. A Nishuma will never react when grabbed by a man, and will never unleash magical attacks when used by a man (it can still be used as a blunt weapon, though). That's the in-game lore explanation for having only female warriors. The actual reason is that we wanted a game with pretty girls fighting monsters, and we came up with some "explanation" for that.
So we came up with this idea of attacks that target a Doll's lower abdomen and pelvic area as a way to disrupt their "magical link" to their weapons. The first idea was that "magic drain attack" seen in the trailer (the purple demon sucking energy out of Cami's lower abdomen) and then evolved from there to make more physical attacks. This includes the magical spells and also the "cool finishers".
And lastly, there's some minor changes in the demo level, mostly related to areas where you have to fight enemies in tiny platforms. Enemies in those tiny platforms were removed.

Hello everybody.
There's been a few new development updates in Killer Dolls Dark Abyss, in various areas, and I wanted to share them with you.
I made some more work on the enemy AI to make them react to the traps better. In a previous demo update, traps could damage enemies. Now, if enemies are hit by a trap, they will move away from it. Overall, enemies avoid walking into traps, but there's always the chance they come in contact with one, so with this update they will get away from the traps if they are hit by them.
This will make it into a demo update soon-ish.
In the previous update I hinted about some enemies and attack types that can deplete or completely wipe out a Doll's magic bar. I explained the reasons for that, and I showed a video. Now I have an updated video that shows the full idea.
In the video you can see a few things: her magic goes down. There's some pink particle effect around her lower belly, that is somewhat reminiscent of the "magic sucking attack" you see near the end of the trailer (four-ear purple demon sucking the energy from the Doll's belly). When she recovers, she goes into a "pain state" that shows in her idle, walk and run animations. Actually this "pain state" will also affect gameplay.
When in "pain state" she still moves at the same speed and she can still attack, but she can barely dash, she cannot jump, and she cannot use magic attacks (blood-stone spells and special moves/executions). Some gameplay aspects stay the same because it would feel too penalizing if she is crippled too much with these attacks. Still not sure if the dash is reduced too much, so we will have to test that. Another idea I was debating is whether or not magic attacks should just be disabled or if we should put an animation that shows she's unable to perform them (like some kind of "pain reaction" for trying to do the attack).
I think this will need an additional tutorial to explain the effects of that kind of attack, so players know why certain things don't work if they are attacked that way.
You won't be able to experience this in the demo because these enemies don't show up here. However, if you want to test that out, maybe I could add some "demo-only room" in the demo level with a special type of enemy that performs a similar attack so you can test the "pain state" mechanic and discuss what adjustments it may need.
And now, time for an even darker update. The caves/mines enemy is fully functional now. The boss has some really disturbing and sinister detail that I added after discussing it with a couple of people. It's very disturbing, but I think that's what makes it cool. This was actually inspired by the "Labyrinth Madman" enemy from Bloodborne, which you can see here.
The caves/mines enemy has a top-level Doll apprentice (known as "Little Chicks" in the game and also the demo) tied up to his improvised mace. There's a catch, though. The girl is alive. You can see the boss and his peculiar mace in the images below. Moni added for size reference.
The mace has some shards of magical obsidian embeded to it (the same one used for the "Nishumas"), and one of them is slightly piercing her lower belly. This gives him "magical abilities" that he can use during the battle. You can see some of his moves in the video below.
You can see that, whenever he hits with his mace, a purple aura surrounds it. The idea is that magic is pulled out of the girl and transmitted to the obsidian shards every time she experiences pain. You can also see her react to the hits and hear her tiny screams when the mace hits something, which makes the whole thing even darker.
As you know, Killer Dolls Dark Abyss is self-published. Originally, I wanted to get a publisher and funding, but that didn't work. However, maybe it's for the best. One of the nice things of making a self-published game is that it can have a lot of different things that would be forced out of the game by a publisher. Something tells me the things you see in this update would not be allowed by a publisher, and some of the other stuff I will show in the future would also not be allowed. Not to mention publishers would (and the ones I spoke to actually did) complain about the designs of the girls.
On this same subject, someone on YouTube asked if KDDA will make it to consoles. The plan is to port this to PlayStation, but will only be released if it's allowed "as is", meaning sexy outfits and dark elements.
And now I think it's time for a more pleasant update. In the post about Moni's outfit redesign I mentioned Moni's red hair in previous versions of the demo was a bug, not a deliberate choice, so her hair was changed to brown, which was her intended hair color. But, to compensate for the change, the game would feature a red-haired Doll. I was playing around with the character design program and made the red-haired Doll. Her name is Vero (Veronica), and she's hot.
I still don't know what her outfit will look like (she's just wearing a generic leotard used as base for the "festive costume" outfit), and I don't know what weapon she will use. I also have two more Dolls, and I wanted to share them with you:
Additionally, I am happy to show you the next two Dolls that will, eventually, make it into Killer Dolls Dark Abyss.
This is Pame (Pamela), The Feathered Serpent. Just like Vero, she still has no outfit and this leotard is a generic leotard. I already have her outfit design, though. It was designed by a girl working on the game a few months ago. She's going to be the shortest Doll, with barely 155 cm of height. She's also the "small boobs but big butt" Doll of the game.
And this is Vale (Valeria), The Daughter of The Moon and Cami's twin sister. I don't have the outfit design yet, but I have a solid idea of what it will be. Since she's Cami's twin sister, and Cami is The Daughter of The Sun (hence the red/pink costume), Vale's outfit will be similar to Cami's but with dark-blue and black colors. She's virtually identical to Cami, but the shape of her eyes is slightly different, and she will also have slightly different (bigger) body proportions.
And that's all for this time. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.
If you like what you see, and you like the idea of a game about cute girls fighting monsters, please wishlist Killer Dolls Dark Abyss!
Also, this game has a patreon. Joining the patreon is free, since there's no rewards at the moment, and there's only a few subscribers, but you have the option to donate in case you want to support the development.

Hello.
It's been a while since the last update, but Killer Dolls Dark Abyss is still alive, and there's a few updates. This is going to be a long one!
Ceci, The Jaguar, has gone through some upgrades. Here's a picture that shows a before and after. I think she looks better than before.
There's been more work on the levels. Updates are mostly for the forest level, but the new caves/mines level has also seen some changes. The idea is that this level also has some ruins of "the old world" (since this is some sort of post-apocalyptic game), so one of the pictures shows a building, that will soon be dirtied and ruined a little. Here's some pictures of the forest level.
There's been some new enemies as well. These are enemies that will show in the mines/caves level. In the story, they are very violent and brutal, and they have some really brutal attacks. This video shows some of them.
You can see some of these attacks deplete the Doll's magic. There's a reason for that, so it's time for some quick lore. In Killer Dolls lore, the weapons used by the Dolls (called "Nishumas") can only be used by women because the obsidian used to make the weapons "connects" or "reacts" to the women's capacity to give birth and then use this linked energy to unleash magic attacks. This means the Doll don't have magical power themselves, as the magical power comes from their weapons. Some enemies know that, and some of their attacks target the Doll's lower abdomen area to target their ability to use magic (in the game this translates into reducing or completely wiping the Doll's magic bar).
There's more lore related to this subject, but that's the basic idea.
The caves/mines level is somewhere in the middle of the game, and later levels will have enemies that exploit this vulnerability a lot, including a very vicious boss that will make sure you are barely able to use your magic. This should make combat more interesting and difficult.
This lore bit also partially explains why there's only playable women in the game (the real reason was because we wanted a game with cute girls, but we came up with a lore reason for a female-only group of warriors).
Another update is a small change in Moni's outfit, specifically, the arm and leg bands. So far, two of the three Dolls have a nickname: Cami, (Camila) is The Daughter of The Sun, and Ceci (Cecilia) is The Jaguar), and planned Dolls also have a nickname (for example Cami's twin sister, Vale, Valeria, will be The Daughter of The Moon). That made me think Moni doesn't have a nickname so after a while, I came up with a change to the outfit that could give her a nickname.
Now she's going to be Moni (Monica), The Jade Princess as she now has jade bracelets.
The rest of the time has gone into setting up new enemies and fixing enemies and gameplay stuff. For example, these are the zombies that will show up in the forest level.
One of the zombies has a staff with a horse skull at the top. This enemy can produce a very interesting attack that also depletes magic.
The horse skull staff is related to another enemy, the woman that "controls" the zombie men.
According to the lore, this enemy is a "Siguanaba" and is based on a local legend from our country, El Salvador. In the legend, this beautiful woman shows up at night to attract men and, when they are close, she turns into this monster with a horse face and drives men mad. We adapted this legend into the idea of having this "Siguanaba" enemy that has brainwashed men, but they have been under her control for so many years they have turned into living corpses (meaning that they biologically died but she is still controlling them).
I think that's all the updates for this time.
If you like what you see, and you like the idea of a game about cute girls fighting monsters, please wishlist Killer Dolls Dark Abyss!

Hello.
There's a new update for the demo. This update doesn't add/change any new content, but fixes some gameplay issues:
Health and magic potions recover more points than before.
Enemies can't jump on you so frequently anymore. If you're knocked down, it will take longer for enemies to be able to perform the same attack again.
Enemies can't perform the double-attack so frequently either. If you receive a double attack, it will take longer for them to perform the attack again.
Work on Killer Dolls Dark Abyss continues, as the rest of the content is added to the game. We're also working on new screenshots and a new trailer to reflect the new additions to the game.

While working on the game, some weird behavior was found in some enemies after this last updated. The idea for the enemies was to be at a distance and then move forward to the player and attack, but the behavior now was that the enemy moved forward and attacked at the same time, causing an undesired result. There is a fix now that should fix that issue.
Since the engine already had Moni's new outfit, this new demo update includes the outfit, because there was no reason to keep it from you. You will notice Moni's hair is now brown, not "red-ish". Moni was never meant to be redhead in this game, and it was more like a visual bug we could never get rid of. However, since redheads are nice, we will add a redhead Doll in the future to compensate.
As always, thanks for the support. If you are new here, and a hack'n'slash with sexy girls sounds cool, please wishlist the game :)

There is also a change in the dash. Now the dash has a very short cool down. Before, you could just spam dash+attack and that made combat less fun and more disorienting. There are also some changes to the demo level so it works with this change (for example, an area where you have to jump on platforms to reach a door). More changes to the level may come to adjust to the new dash better.
Work continues on Killer Dolls Dark Abyss and hopefully there's new stuff to show soon.

There is a new demo available. The demo makes some minor changes to the AI but also fixes a crash error. The demos released at the end of this month had a strange bug that caused the game to crash. After digging into the crash log and reviewing the latest changes to the demo, I think the problem is now resolved.
We're working on other parts of the game, as well as improving what is already in the game. More to come soon.
Hello. The latest demo had some issues caused by the changes in AI and also some changes that were supposed to improve some gameplay but ended doing the opposite. The issues should now be resolved in this new demo patch. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Hello.
There's a new demo available now. This demo fixes a few issues and also makes some changes to the enemies. Changes should make the enemies more aggressive but allow for more time to react, or at least that was the plan, lol.
The AI for this game is a little tricky because the Dolls are fast, and it's cool that they are fast. Killer Dolls Dark Abyss is a fast game, so it doesn't make sense to have a slow combat with parries, blocking, and it doesn't make to have enemies that "slowly come to you and prepare to attack" either, like other games. So everything has to work according to the speed of the Dolls. The changes only affect the punching enemies and the bow enemies.
This is specially true for, Cami, The Daughter of The Sun (the silver-haired Doll). She's not only fast but can attack from the distance, and her play style forces you to move around since she attacks with the orb.
Other fixes:
Dash direction should be more responsive now. There was an issue that caused the dash to NOT go in the direction you wanted, if you changed direction abruptly and dashed immediately. Now, dash should always go in the direction you want.
The "undead orc" (the orc that revives) should be finally fixed.
Also, the demo should now support cloud saves. This may not be so relevant for the demo, since it's fairly short, but it's there if you need it. The full game will also have cloud saves.
Also, was thinking about adding attack cues to all the punching enemies attacks (the glowing eyes), but I don't know if that's too much. Will continue testing other ways to deliver the attack anticipation for the punching enemies.
As always, if you have any comments or suggestions, drop them in the comments. Also please share this game with your friends. We hope this game does well enough to make more Killer Dolls games in the future!

Hello.
There's a quick update that fixes a problem where enemy attacks were not registering (the enemy did a punch, but Moni would not receive damage). Sorry for the inconvenience.
Issues where enemies "revive" or "won't die" should also be fixed now. These issues caused enemies to just not die/disappear after their health was depleted.
This update also brings Moni's updated special spell behavior. In the demo only one of these is available, but you can still see all of them in the video below:
There is one cool thing we want to add to the boss battle, and hopefully it makes it to the next update. We are also working on changing the enemy AI of an enemy class and also we wanted to make the finisher easier to trigger by increasing the amount of health you can have before you can perform the finisher (for example, making it so you can perform the finisher if you have 40 health instead of 20, but with the limitation of how much health you can get).
By the way, we have a Patreon that you can join for free or donate $3 a month. KDDA is a self-funded, and it's done that way because we didn't want to accept any sort of funding that could potentially compromise the vision of the game (or the design of The Dolls). Link to Patreon

If you have played the demo enough, you may have found a bug where an enemy that was supposedly killed just "revives" and stands there. After a long time testing and working on enemies, I think the source of the bug is finally found. A new demo with the bug fix will be available "soon."
But not so soon, because there's going to be a couple of more things. Moni's spell attack is going to change. Well, all of them will change, but only one is relevant for the demo. You can see the new way it works in this video. Now it has some nice slow-mo (with slow-mo jiggle) and blends into the game better, since you see her do the attack.
Additionally, we've also been working on a couple of levels and additional enemies for the final game. The game is taking shape slowly but it's getting there.
If you like the direction this game is taking, please wishlist it and share it with your friends. Killer Dolls Dark Abyss is a self-funded, and it's done that way because we didn't want to accept any sort of funding that could potentially compromise the vision (or the design of The Dolls). This means all we have to succeed is your wishlists and future purchases. But if you want to help a bit, you can support our Patreon for only $3 a month https://www.patreon.com/thedomaginarium
Thanks for the support. More updates coming soon. In the meantime, if you have any questions about the game, you can post them in the forum.

There's a quick demo update. This update changes the behavior of some traps, now making it that enemies are also damaged by the spike and blade traps. Long story short, the reason traps didn't affect enemies dates back to the time Killer Dolls was a top-down game, but was never changed. Now, traps will damage enemies.

First, it fixes some issues with the menus, where the buttons would lose focus when user moved the mouse. This is fixed, but buttons may not "highlight" if you move across buttons with the keyboard. We will deal with that in a future update.
The bouncing balls shot by the boss now are destroyed if they hit the walls. This is to prevent a super-cluttered room when the boss shoots the bouncing balls near a wall.
Boss and bullets now freeze completely when you get the "nice animation" before a spell attack. Previously, the boss wasn't fully freezing and bullets didn't freeze.
Additionally, there's a small change in the unlockable spell. Now she shoots 3 fireballs instead of 1.
On a side note, we will be in the Steam Next Fest, and hopefully this will help the game reach more eyes and gather more support!
Thanks for the support and we hope you enjoy Killer Dolls Dark Abyss.

Hello
Demo 1.9 is out. This one adds a couple of "story-related" details, including a boss battle intro cinematic. The first element is this young girl that find somewhere in the level
She tells you about "an evil woman": the villain of the game.
Like the Dolls, she can also use the magical weapons, but she is using the weapons to do evil, unlike the Dolls. She does a lot of sick things in the game, and our goal is to make it very satisfactory and cathartic to defeat and kill her at the end of the game.
This young girl links (story-wise) to some other girls you find in the demo (you'll know which ones).
The second one is an intro cinematic for the boss. This also links to the things you see in the demo level.
The demo also has a few bug fixes and gameplay improvements.
If you like the demo, add Killer Dolls Dark Abyss to your wishlist. If you have any questions or comments about the game, post them in the forum.
