- Fix mysteriously unlit overworld map locations.
Mac users: if your save data is currently missing, please
check the folder (deep breath): "~/Library/Containers/KentuckyRouteZero/Library/Application Support/CardboardComputer/KentuckyRouteZero"
The save files in that folder are named "save.krz"
(maybe also "save-1.krz" and "save-2.krz"). You can
copy these to their correct folder: "~/Library/Application Support/CardboardComputer/KentuckyRouteZero". Sorry for the inconvenience!

- You're not dreaming: Kentucky Route Zero now has an "anti-aliasing" option!
- Change the font weight and line thickness together by adjusting the "Lines" option in the new "Era" menu.
- Shadowy repairs to the mysterious "Wrongler."
- Many bug-fixes and text corrections.
Special thanks to the legendary Freya Holmér for helping us work out the new line renderer!

Two months from today it'll be Christmas Day, which is a terrifying realisation. But merch company iam8bit are hoping they have you covered if there's a big Annapurna fan in your life. They've just announced the Annapurna Interactive Deluxe Limited Edition Collection for the Nintendo Switch, which is such a mouthful that the title alone feels like it justifies a $200 price tag.
Yes, the Annapurna Interactive Deluxe Limited Edition Collection for the Nintendo Switch will set you back $200 — equivalent to roughly £165 if you live in the UK, and that's not counting some potentially hefty international shipping fees if you live outside of the USA. Alright, that's not actually out of the ordinary for Limited-Special-Collector's-Ultimate-Editions these days, but I suspect it still feels quite steep to most of us.
I'm not here to be snarky; I love Annapurna's curation of excellent indie games, and 12 of the greatest hits from the publisher's back-catalogue are included on the cartridge that's the centrepiece of this collection. With hindsight I think it's to their credit that my first response upon seeing the list of games was to question some big omissions: seriously, no Stray, no Gone Home, what gives? (OK, so Stray isn't actually out on Switch and iam8bit isn't a porting studio, but Gone Home is legitimately an odd one to miss out.)

This patch works around text rendering problems in both Chinese languages, including some characters disappearing and some appearing garbled, which have come up on some Windows computers. We are still working on some refinements to rendering Chinese text. A related issue happens on some Mac M1 computers & we'll address that in the next few days. Thanks for your patience!

Developer Cardboard Computer sporadically released their poetic adventure game, Kentucky Route Zero, in acts spread across multiple years. It was a teasing release schedule that only aided the game’s surreal mystery, so it’s no surprise that the studio have dropped the game’s first major update three years after the fifth and final chapter wrapped things up. The aptly named Postmodern Update overhauls the game’s user interface with a new Modern mode, alongside a host of bug fixes and more language options.
“The new ‘Modern’ interface is designed to be more flexible and readable on a wider variety of devices, including tablets and the Steam Deck,” the studio wrote in a recent Steam blog. Kentucky Route Zero’s smaller acts and text-based nature make it almost perfect for on-the-go devices, although I’m more interested in using the game as bedtime reading instead, as someone who regrettably bounced off of it in the early acts. “We've also overhauled and improved the ‘Classic’ interface from the original release, and its lo-fi companion, ‘Retro,’” the studio also wrote.
The update also lets you “zoom in on details in the scene,” which sounds handy for smaller screens. New translations now support Arabic, Chinese, Polish, Thai, Swedish, Turkish, and Brazilian Portuguese, too.

We're excited to share with you our first major update to Kentucky Route Zero since the release of Act V in 2020. This update includes a major overhaul of the user interface, called "Modern" mode, new language support and improvements to existing translations, and a sprawling rhizome of bug fixes and improvements.
The new "Modern" interface is designed to be more flexible and readable on a wider variety of devices, including tablets and the Steam Deck. But we've also overhauled and improved the "Classic" interface from the original release, and its lo-fi companion, "Retro."
With these interfaces co-existing, overlapping and criss-crossing, deconstructing the grands récits of human-computer interaction, and destabilizing the linguistic locus of the text through multiplication of translations, we could only call this event "The Postmodern Update".
We plan one more update in the near future, in which we plan to add line rendering improvements for high resolutions, and full multi-touch input on the Steam Deck.
Features and improvements:
- Switch freely between "Modern," "Classic," and "Retro" modes.
- New translations: Arabic, Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese, Polish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish.
- A new Japanese translation.
- Steam Cloud sync.
- Zoom in on details in the scene by holding the right mouse button or gamepad trigger, or pinching the screen.
- Improved touchscreen support makes the game 100% hot dog compatible.
Special thanks to Echo River Translators for the Chinese translation and Tsuchiya Ayumi for the new Japanese translation.
We're always-already grateful for your support, thank you for playing!

Technical Note: This update also moves the save/settings location, as writing data to the "Documents" folder has become problematic in recent operating system versions. Your save and settings data should automatically be copied to the new location when you run the game. See README.txt / RELEASE_NOTES.txt in the game's folders for more detail.

A while back, the BBC did a series on the trains that travel across the hills of India. These were services built during British rule, engines still humming along thanks to sheer determination. The last episode visited Shimla, the summer capital of British India, including the Chapslee Estate. It had turned into a small hotel, where the now-deceased Kanwar Singh spoke fondly of its charms. He described his services not as a business selling accommodation or food, but selling an "ambience" of a previous age.
Kentucky Route Zero, a point-and-click adventure that was a decade in the making and that released its final episode in January this year, seems to provide a similar type of ambience, one not based explicitly in time. The story follows Conway, an antiques delivery driver making his final stop, searching for the mysterious eponymous highway in a world drenched with magical-realism.
You might have conjured up images of hillbillies and farming knowing the game is based in Kentucky. But this couldn't be further from the truth, with designer Jake Elliot, along with Tamas Kemenczy and musician Ben Babbitt, speaking of diverse literature, plays and films, such as the work of Andrei Tarkovsky, all of which provided sources of creative inspiration. "We have a story of somebody making a delivery," Elliot says during a group video call with me, Kemenczy and Babbitt, "But of course it's run through with the emotional realities of why they're doing it and what it means for them. That's how I'd experience it."
Looking back, I reckon Kentucky Route Zero ‘s third act might’ve been the best of the lot. That it was the act to introduce wandering musicians Johnny and Junebug playing no small part in that impression. This week, the fictional duo took their music out of the supernatural road

That it was the act to introduce wandering musicians Johnny and Junebug playing no small part in that impression. This week, the fictional duo took their music out of the supernatural road trip with an EP full of sad robot love songs – a perfect soundtrack for getting lonely with on these rainy October afternoons.

I adore Kentucky Route Zero. Likewise, I adore the pieces on this site that discuss it. Alec’s review in particular is incredibly articulate, goes into a lot of depth, and comes from a place of passion for the game. The discussion of Kentucky Route Zero generally, however, can be somewhat overwhelming to trawl through as a newcomer, and in order to fully take in much of what Alec Meer and others have written about Cardboard Computer s point-and-click interactive fiction, you d have to pour yourself a cup of relaxing peppermint tea and set aside a whole day of reading, like I did.

This is the story of a journey s end. But no homecoming can have meaning in isolation from the voyage that preceded it. This is why offering some critical judgement upon the fifth and (as far as we know) final Act of the interstate dream odyssey that is Kentucky Route Zero is an exercise in absurdity. It cannot be separated from what came before, nor from how the long years of waiting altered its place and power in memory. It also, perhaps, cannot be separated from how the world has changed during those long years.
So the following must be about all of those things, and not just the final moments of a landmark in videogame storytelling. To call Act V a climax, or a finale, or a denouement, is incorrect. Unexpectedly short and sharp, yet still wide of focus, it s more of an epilogue to a decade-long journey which reached its final destination three and a half years ago.

Act V of Kentucky Route Zero is now available! This major update also includes all of the 'interludes'; free, experimental games which we published between acts & fill in the story and characters from different perspectives. We've also made many enhancements to the game, including localization into French, Italian, German, Spanish, Russian, Korean & Japanese; full audio captions; and adjustable text size. This update also adds Steam Achievements for the first time!
The three of us (Jake, Tamas & Ben) started designing this game in the middle of 2010. We published Act I in the beginning of 2013, and have been updating the game with new acts or interludes regularly since then. So it's been a long road! We are so grateful for the opportunity to have worked on this game at our own pace, giving it the time and resources it's needed, and to you all for being such a great audience over the years.
Enjoy the game!
