Hello everyone,
You’ve maybe heard me mention that we’re working on a new stream for the end of this month. As it’s the first of its kind, I wanted to give some context about what we’ll be showing.
On April 30th at 3pm BST, we’ll be going live on Twitch, YouTube and Bilibili with our first ever Total War: Show & Tell.
Show and Tells are something we regularly do internally, where different development teams come together to share snippets of the cool things they’re working on, and we wanted to try and extend an invitation to one of these publicly.
Before we get into it – I just want to highlight that we’ll be showing you in-development footage, mostly running without UI. Nothing seen in this stream will be final quality, so you’ll see placeholders and broken textures all over the place. This is something that we’ve been doing over on our Medieval III streams – and you’ve told us that you enjoyed these insights, so we’re trying to expand that thinking to other games in the hopes of getting you all involved earlier.
If you don’t want any spoilers, stop reading here!
We have asked each development team what they’d be interested in presenting, so in this Show and Tell, you can expect to see:
Medieval III
The Building Medieval III series is the best place for us to share our progress, and we don’t want to try and cram one of those streams into 15 minutes. Instead, we’re using this space to discuss our approach to rosters (using one faction as an example) and answer some top community questions (but look forward to our next dedicated Medieval III stream in the Summer).
Rome II
Surprise! We spoke last year (and in the Community Inbox stream) about wanting to return to some of our older titles and update them. Rome II is the first title we’re doing this for, and we’ll be sharing our plans for what you can expect to see.
Warhammer III
We’ll start with a discussion on a few bits about upcoming Campaign AI changes and the Siege Rework, before giving you the first look at Bhashiva in-engine, alongside the accompanying FLC Legendary Hero coming as part of Update 8.0.
Then, it’s onto Lords Of The End Times, and we’re thrilled to be introducing another Legendary Lord. We’ll show some in-engine footage of them alongside revealing a couple of the units included in their pack.
Warhammer 40,000
There’s been a lot of discussion about the game’s scale, so we wanted to take this opportunity to answer some of those questions. We’ll show you the current development pass on planetary visuals, chatting about how we’re tackling battling across an entire planet. Then, we’ve got a few battle maps to fly around in, where we’ll give you a proper look at the map featured in our trailer, alongside a look at some less dense maps.
Community Inbox
Our first community inbox was well received, and we thought this is a good place to slot in another. As the game directors will have already covered specific game bits, we’ll have Roger answer some of the franchise-level questions that you’ve emailed in. If you haven’t dropped Roger an email before, we can’t promise that if you did so today that it would make it into our stream next week, but don’t let it stop you doing it for when we next catch up with Roger. You can do so via [email protected].
At the end of each segment, we’ll let you know when you’ll hear more from each game. We’re very excited to show you what we’re working on and hope to see you there!
P.S. Consider this a one-off for now, but if you enjoy the stream and the format, please dolet us know and we’ll look to repeat it when we’ve got another batch of things to show.
See you there,
Josh // Head of Community Engagement

TOTAL WAR: MEDIEVAL III
We’ve been waiting a long time to say this: Total War is going back to the medieval era.
We’re in the opening stages of Total War: MEDIEVAL III’s development – pre-production, to be precise, meaning we’re still years from release. But this isn’t just another game for us, it’s the realisation of something we’ve dreamed about for almost 20 years. The Medieval series is one of the most cherished chapters in Total War’s history, and creating a true successor is a goal we’ve held close for a long time. Now, we finally have the chance to make it happen.
This next chapter will be both a tribute to its predecessors and a bold revolution for what historical Total War can be. The team’s vision is clear: to create the ultimate medieval strategy sandbox featuring our signature blend of grand strategy and tactical real-time battles. A game that lets you shape your realms, rewrite history, and immerse yourself in the drama and intrigue of the Middle Ages like never before.
Some of you might be asking why we’ve revealed it this early, and the answer is quite simple: we want you to come on this development journey with us. At certain points throughout the year, we’ll share behind-the-scenes insights and give you a closer look at how the game is taking shape, so you can see it evolve with us – and in some cases influence its direction.
This isn’t just a sequel; it’s the rebirth of historical Total War.
The End Times are nigh, but Total War: WARHAMMER’s saga is far from over.
It’s hard to believe, but the Warhammer series is about to hit its 10-year milestone, and what better way to celebrate than with something truly apocalyptic. In summer 2026, the Lords of The End Times storm into the Immortal Empires campaign, bringing with them four brand-new Legendary Lords from different races alongside a deadly host of new units, lore inspired objectives and sandbox campaigns.
Leading the charge is none other than Nagash, the great necromancer himself. Long whispered about in the darkest corners of the lore, he returns with one goal: to drown the world in undeath. He’ll be joined by a motley crew of horrors including the mighty Blood Dragon Legendary Hero, Walach Harkon, alongside Tomb Heralds, Morghast Archai, the Khemric Titan and more.
But that’s not all. These new Legendary Lords arrive alongside the free End Times Update, a transformative new addition to Immortal Empires inspired by pivotal chapters from the lore. Expect a revamped campaign experience; cataclysmic events, apocalyptic scenarios, and all new campaign customisation options. And to crown this update, a new Legendary Lord will rise, ready to leave their mark on the cataclysm to come. There’s more to come, and we’ll share additional details as development moves forward into the new year.
Finally, we’re in the early stages of developing our End Times content. What we’ve shared represents our current vision, but it may evolve as development continues - as always with the goal of delivering the best possible experience for all of you.
Every new era of Total War starts with the right foundations. For our Core Technology team, that meant creating a new evolution of our game engine - and we’re calling it Warcore.
When we looked at the lineup of future Total War titles, it was clear that our existing technology needed to level-up and Warcore is the result. It’s the most advanced engine foundation in the franchise’s history, empowering our developers with powerful tools to make gameplay more immersive, dynamic, and responsive than ever before.
But it’s important to highlight that this isn’t a one-time upgrade. Our talented team have designed it with a long-term vision, so whilst it will be in its infancy at the outset, the intent is for it to evolve over time and unlock groundbreaking new capabilities that ensure Total War stays at the cutting edge of strategy gaming for years to come.
And for the first time in franchise history, Warcore opens the door for future Total War titles to launch on PlayStation and Xbox, bringing the scale, depth, and tactical mastery of Total War to a new generation of commanders.
We understand that some of you will have concerns about how we approach console development, and that’s completely natural. Rest assured, PC remains at the very core of our design ethos, as it has done for the past 25 years. Throughout this journey, we’ve been working hand in hand with experienced Total War players to ensure that what we develop continues to deliver the same immersive, authentic, and tactically rich experiences you’ve come to expect from the franchise.
As a final note, please be aware that the content shown within this section was for illustrative purposes only.
WITNESS THE REVEAL OF A REVOLUTIONARY NEW CHAPTER ON DECEMBER 11TH
Behind the scenes, one of our teams is working on something truly special. It’s a project long in the making that will mark a revolutionary new chapter for the Total War franchise.
Join us for the grand unveiling at The Game Awards on December 11th / 12th where you’ll see an incredible trailer and get your first small glimpse of gameplay. The wait will be worth it.
Once the project is officially unveiled, you’ll hear directly from members of the development team on December 16th as they share some insight into their vision and what’s to come.
4.30pm PST, 11th December 7.30pm EST, 11th December 12.30am GMT, 12th December 1.30am CEST, 12th December 8.30am CST, 12th December 9.30am JST, 12th December
We want to thank you once again for all the support over these past twenty-five years. This franchise has grown from humble beginnings into a cornerstone of strategy gaming, and none of that would have been possible without the dedication and enthusiasm of our players, our studio teams, and our publisher and support colleagues around the globe.
From all of us here on Total War, thank you. Here’s to the next twenty-five!

FAQ
Total War: MEDIEVAL III
Q: What is the release date? A: This project is still in its early development stages, so we don’t have a release date to share just yet. It’s a long-term effort, and while it will take time, we’re excited about what’s ahead and will keep you updated as progress continues.
Q: How often will you be communicating about development? A: We plan to share updates roughly every quarter. Game development is complex, and things can change quickly at this stage, so rather than frequent small updates, we’re focusing on fewer but more meaningful ones - giving you a clearer picture of how progress is shaping up.
Q: What features, map details or other gameplay details can you share at this point? A: We're not ready to share specific details about the design direction quite yet, but some of these details will be revealed over time via our development updates. Check out the introductory blog posts from our Game Director here, or the game vision blog from our Creative Director here.
Q: Will sieges feature in this game? A: Yes. We’ll share more details in the future, but we see them as an essential component of Medieval warfare.
Q: Will this game use the new Warcore engine? A: Yes. This will be the first historical Total War game built from the Warcore engine, unlocking new possibilities to bring the medieval era to life in ways never seen before.
Q: How can I keep up to date on the development progress? A: The best way to stay up to date on development news is by joining the Total War Community Hub, where you can follow and get updates on all the latest action across the franchise.
Q: Will this game have blood pack? A: No. We want to immerse you in an authentic recreation of the Middle Ages, so blood will play a key role in making the period feel appropriately authentic.
Total War: WARHAMMER – Lords Of The End Times
Q: Will The End Times be the end for Total War: Warhammer? A: We have more content planned for after the Lords Of The End Times releases.
Q: Are you replicating The End Times story? A: Like many of our past releases, we’re taking inspiration from the lore rather than directly translating it. This series has always been about creating a fantasy sandbox that feels uniquely yours, and we want to give you the tools to shape your own story amongst the apocalypse.
Q: Who are the other Legendary Lords? A: As we approach next summer’s release, we’ll start revealing the other famous and infamous Legendary Lords who will join Nagash within the pack.
Q: Will I have to own Total War: WARHAMMER I, II or III to play? A: No. You can simply purchase one of the four new Legendary Lords and you’ll be ready to conquer the apocalypse.
Q: When will we hear more about the content? A: We’ll return with more information about the content in Spring 2026.
Q: What are Cataclysmic Events? A: Cataclysmic events or 'Devastation' is what we are using to describe the changes to the campaign map seen during the showcase. We have plans for multiple ways to impact the campaign map and allow you to 'devastate' the land.
WARCORE:
Q: Will all future projects use Warcore? A: All major future releases will use the new Warcore engine, but certain projects, such as Total War: WARHAMMER III will continue to use the current engine.
Q: Why didn’t you upgrade the engine sooner? A: Total War runs on a custom engine, so upgrades are very resource intensive, involving major redevelopment and testing. Instead of rushing, we invested time to ensure the upgrade would deliver meaningful improvements without disrupting our teams and projects.
Q: Why do you continue to use a proprietary engine? A: We continue to use a proprietary engine because it’s tailored to the unique needs of Total War. It gives us full control over features, performance, and scalability, allowing us to create the complex systems that define the series.
Q: Will future games perform better? A: The new engine brings richer visuals and more dynamic gameplay systems, delivering noticeable improvements - while preserving the classic Total War style that fans know and love.
THE GAME AWARDS:
Q: What time will the new unannounced title be shown? A: We don’t have specific times we can share, but we encourage everyone to tune into the event from 7.30pm EST / 4.30 pm PST on December 11th or 12.30am GMT / 8.30am CST / 9.30am JST on December 12th.
Q: How can I watch? A: Watch the action unfold via The Game Awards official channels: YouTube, Twitch, Amazon Prime Video. Click here for more information.

Hey Total War fans,
25 years ago, in a small one room office just down the road from where I write this message, Total War was born. The vision was rooted in a love for both history and strategy gaming, with the aim of seamlessly mixing the best parts of grand strategy and real-time tactical battles into a single experience where you truly felt like the commander of a vast empire.
During those early years Total War’s identity formed. The team were focused on authentic recreations of the most pivotal moments in human history from the Age of Antiquity through to the emergence of the great naval empires. As the genre evolved and our teams changed, we expanded into new territory by leaping into the fantastical; meticulously recreating Games Workshop’s iconic Warhammer World as a truly unique strategy experience.
There have been triumphs and tribulations throughout the years, and we’re honoured and humbled to be one of the few video game franchises that get the chance to celebrate such a huge milestone. Without your support this would never have been possible – so a massive thank you from all of us on this special day!
[Early 2000's at the old South Water where games from SHOGUN - MEDIEVAL II were developed]
Some of you may remember from my update last year that we had plans to celebrate this anniversary in a meaningful way. Our teams are hard at work fine tuning a program of content that not only shines a light on past games but builds the foundation for us to begin revealing what we have planned for the future of Total War. And yes, this means the reveal of new games and content.
25 years of Total War will begin with a look back at our legacy. Taking place from August until the end of November, we’ll journey through each series that has been released since 2000. Expect content like retrospective video interviews, developer livestreams, sales across our entire catalogue, as well as fantasy and historical multiplayer tournaments. We also want to make this a celebration you can get involved in, so we'll be hosting giveaway competitions, inviting you to ask questions of our developers, as well as spotlighting your favourite mods and content creators who have helped make the Total War community what it is today.
[2013, the launch of Total War: ROME II]
Beyond celebrating the past, we plan on welcoming the future of Total War in a big way. Behind the scenes, we’re in the early stages of producing the Total War: 25th Anniversary Showcase, the first video presentation of its kind in our history. Taking place in early December, this show will unveil the new games that you can expect to play in the near and distant future, as well as introduce you to the development teams making them. We’ll have more details to share as we approach the end of the year, but whether you’re a fantasy or history fan, there will be plenty to enjoy!
Alongside all of this will be more WARHAMMER III content. Patch 6.2 arrives next week with a focus on Magical Items, Tides of Torment's third and final faction will be revealed in July, and we'll unveil some long-awaited content at the anniversary showcase. It's incredible to think that this series is now in its ninth year, and we look forward to sharing what we have planned for the future.
[2016, the launch of Total War: WARHAMMER]
What’s especially important to me this year is celebrating everyone who has made Total War what it is today. This includes all of you reading this message who have helped create the best community in gaming. Whether you’re playing our games for thousands of hours, watching our trailers, submitting bug feedback, or commenting on our socials, all of this has helped us build a game we all love.
It also takes an army of passionate and talented staff to take our games from concept to completion. Many of them talk about growing up with Total War; how it gave them an interest in history or the deep lore of Warhammer, and how it created a desire for them to work at Creative Assembly. They’re fans making the game they love, and I want to thank each and every one of them, past and present, for their contribution to making this milestone possible.
We hope you’re excited for the future.
Happy anniversary to you all,
— Roger Collum, Vice President of Total War

Out of all the historical Total War games, Rome II still commands a solid core of loyal fans even though the ancients-era strategy game has been around for nearly eight years now. It's safe to say, a large part of the game's enduring appeal is the mod scene.
Rome 2 mods helped uplift the game when it wasn't at its best, and as the game matured these same creations helped keep things interesting with various overhauls, realism projects, and other quality of life changes. Divide et Impera is a long-running project that's currently the second most popular mod on the Steam workshop, and it's just got a new major update.
You can read the full patch notes, but in summary this update brings new and improved units to a number of actions, new UI features for population and supply mechanics, new buildings, and some fixes for some long-running bugs that have been previously reported. This update brings the mod to version 1.2.7, and it was previously in beta for a few months.
I don't know what I found more surprising, the fact that someone had made an Avatar: The Last Airbender mod for a Total War game , or that the game they chose is the original Rome: Total War. In case you missed it, The Last Airbender: Total War is a total conversion mod that offe
In case you missed it, The Last Airbender: Total War is a total conversion mod that offers a custom campaign map and custom battle maps based on the popular Nickelodeon show. It has portraits and models for the five major characters, including Avatar Aang, as well as for some of the primary antagonists. Unique unit skins for each of the nations have also been rendered.
The mod reached its beta milestone earlier this week, after a concerted nine-month development effort by the mod team. They're keeping things restrained for now, and will develop the mod depending on player feedback. The main campaign is set at the start of Book 1: Water, although there is another campaign that's set just after the genocide of the air nomads, where you get to command Fire Lord Sozin.

If the peaceful resolution of Avatar: The Last Airbender wasn't what you had in mind, this Rome: Total War mod will let you change that. The modification turns the strategy game into a battle between the four elemental nations of the world, Aang and Zuko right at the forefront.
The Last Airbender: Total War will be a top-to-bottom transformation, turning all the available families and factions into the element-based kingdoms of the popular animated series, and replacing the models with the Avatar's beloved cast of characters. The plan is to have as many aspects of the animation as possible, letting you just straight up go to war, or play out your favourite pivotal scenes and moments of battle.
The mod is unfinished, but according to the latest update from creator KurdishNomad on ModDB, a 2021 release date is on the cards. Two campaigns will be available: an open-ended one featuring Sozin as he leads the Fire Nation in the world war that frames the show, and the main plot, though only some of that will be playable at first, as KurdishNomad works out all the logistics. In previous posts, you can see the settlements for the Water, Earth, and Fire nations.

Ah, Total War: Rome 2 mods. Since launch this game has struggled to forge its own path and find a way out of the shadow of its critically acclaimed namesake. Granted, following up one of the seminal strategy games of the early 2000s is no easy task, and so it's understandable that the sequel does not totally succeed in accomplishing such a lofty goal.
Lacking either the epic civil war of the original Rome, the climactic endgame of Shogun II, or the looming narrative weight of Attila, the grand campaign of Rome II has always been a little flat around the edges. That being said, it did manage to grab fourth place in our list of best Total War games, and still commands a respectable player count, even after all these years and the newer games that have released since.
Regardless, the Total War modding community is here to help. Boasting some of the most exciting player-created content of the series, the mods listed below help push Rome II from a good, but lacklustre sequel to a genuinely great strategy title worthy of its revered lineage.

It still pulls in a respectable 5,000 players on average a day, which is about a third of what Three Kingdoms manages at the moment. We imagine that Rome 2 mods help with that, as does the decent DLC library.
This is a comprehensive list of every faction, unit, and campaign pack ever sold for Rome II in order of release. Our goal here is to summarise the key points, along with details on what makes it stand-out as an expansion along with our general impression as to whether or not it's worth picking up. The golden rule here is that a decent sale can forgive most things, and Rome 2 old enough to benefit from high discount events now, but we still hope you find it useful.
Also remember; Total War DLC's have become fairly factional/thematic, so your mileage can and will vary depending on what's on offer. So if you don't care about the Greek states, for example, then you may not want to buy this back no matter how glowing our recommendation is.
