En Garde! the student game is a free game demo, created in 2018 as a student graduation project by the co-founders of Fireplace Games!
Through it's ~20 minutes runtime, you will discover a part of Adalia's origin story. The Volador Villa was seized by a mysterious invader and his henchmen. You will have to fight for your family's honor!
Despite its clunky gameplay and uneven writing, this student prototype already has the charm of a light-hearted swashbuckling adventure! Back in 2018, it had great reception from industry professionals, players and youtubers (such as Jacksepticeye), and won several 'best student game' awards and nominations.
The success of this prototype is what allowed us to make the full game a reality! We hope you'll enjoy discovering the origins of En Garde! with this game prototype!
As a bonus, here is a concept art for the very first outfit that was designed for Adalia during the development of the student game. Her colors were based off of a magpie, Adalia's spirit bird! In later iterations, we went for more colorful outfits to make her stand out more.

Various fixes for barks to have less barks interruptions and more coherent barks.

Changed the effect of weapon racks on count-duke to make it the same as for Captain.
“Surprise kick” skill snaps better on the target, increased snapping range for all skills.
Boss hud now displays total health of all bosses if there are multiple (for arena mode legend difficulty).
Fixed an issue where Count-Duke and captain would not resist crates and barrels when they are enraged.
Fixed an issue where Count-Duke and Soldiers would try to reach their spawn point after you reloaded checkpoint in the final boss.
Fixed an issue on Count-Duke where it would appear he takes fatigue damage out of nowhere shortly after losing a HP.
Fixed an issue causing the Count-Duke sometimes having the wrong set of animations when enraged.
Fixed swinging cage going through a wall in episode 4.
Fixed swinging cages gaining velocity when swinging for too long.
Fixed tips display in the loading screens + added tips that were missing.
Fixed an issue with border covering credits in the end.
Fixed an issue causing panache wheel UI to display wrong input if player rebind them.
Fixed an issue causing count-duke guard bar UI to have the wrong color when losing an hp while being weakened.
Fixed an issue where multiple soldiers would spawn during the panache skill tutorial in episode 1 if you replayed the episode.
Fixed an issue where the next map wouldn’t load after opening the door under specific circumstances at the beginning of episode 4.
Fixed an issue causing Adalia to jog at sprint speed after a dialogue if she entered while sprinting and changed state during dialogue (when player releases sprint input).

Greetings!
Today’s patch is a smaller one. We mainly focused on improving compatibility with Steam Deck and support a wider array of display ratios, from 4:3 to ultrawide, as well as minor gameplay improvements.
4:3 to ultrawide support: Interface implementation has been revamped to account for display ratio ranging from 4:3 to ultrawide.
Steam Deck Support: Changed the media player and file type for tutorial videos to support more devices (especially Steam Deck). Videos should also load faster now!
We have requested a new verification to Steam support. Hopefully, this fix should allow the game to become officially Steam Deck Verified!
Gameplay improvement: Refactored some logic on enemy reactions and resistances. Enemies who resist to some environmental interactions will now be unable to resist if they are already in a reaction state. For example, a duelist can now be pushed back by a crate thrown at him and won’t be able to dodge it, if he is stunned or knocked down beforehand.
Arena mode: Fixed some visual inconsistencies on slippery area with modifiers Stain of Defeat and Contraband
Extended main menu art to support widescreen support
Fixed several issues with ultrawide screen support
Prevented an issue with saves that could lock the player during the dialogue with El Vigilante after his fight in Episode 4
Small changes & fixes on French localization
Various fixes in environments
Various fixes in dioramas cutscenes
More fixes and changes will be coming in the following weeks!

Greetings, swashbucklers!
The first week since En Garde!'s release has passed and we're incredibly grateful for the reception! Thanks everyone! 💖
In between peeking at streams and reading all of the comments, we've been working on some things based on your feedback! Today, we release the first main patch for En Garde! 🛠
It contains some new quality of life features, some gameplay tweaks and improvements, and a variety of bug fixes. This will not fix all remaining issues with the game, but more patches will be coming in the upcoming weeks!
New features:
When replaying episodes, tutorials windows will not open and be minimized in a corner of the screen, with an optional button prompt to reopen them.
This is a quality of life improvement to fluidify the experience of consecutive playthroughs.
Added a setting to hide all interface.
This was made for players who want to capture gameplay videos or screenshots without interface.
Added an accessibility setting for disabling instant-regen (yellow) guard bars on enemies.
This new setting is useful for players who find yellow guard enemies too difficult or too restrictive.
Improved support of ultrawide display.
HUD and camera framing should now better adapt to ultrawide screens.
These improvements should be a first step towards a perfect support of ultrawide. We will perform extra tests on this in the upcoming days. We are eager to hear feedback from players using ultrawide screens!
Gameplay improvements:
Difficulty tweaks on final boss (episode 4). Added some extra interactions in the arena, simplified waves of enemies. Various tweak on the final boss Count-Duke enemy : especially, reduced his guard amount during yellow bar phases.
We have slightly reduced the difficulty of the final boss. We still want the final boss to be a difficult challenge where you must do great tactical use of every tool at your disposal, but we felt like we went a bit too far with its difficulty.
Various tweaks on the Captain enemy when she is enraged. Increased the number of attacks she can initially take before deflecting the player. Added the ability to surprise her by dodging her base combo even when she's enraged. Reduced her aggressiveness weight. Reduced the maximum time during which captain will chase the player when they want to attack.
We tweaked the Captain enemy to make her a bit more forgiving when she’s in “rage” mode. We might do even more tweaks on the Captain in future updates.
Various clarifications for challenges in UI. Added a highlight on current level’s active challenge in the level brief menu. Challenge titles are now always displayed even when not discovered yet. Fixed an issue with challenges sometimes not displaying in HUD in the areas you have to accomplish them.
Reduced enemy aggressiveness. Slight decrease of the frequency of base attacks for enemies in normal difficulty. Does not impact the frequency of enemies opportunity attacks (red attacks when they defend each other).
Increased time spent by enemies on the ground from 2.5 sec average to 3.5 sec average.
This makes the special skill #2 more powerful because you can now keep enemies on the ground for a longer time while you fight one of them.
Reworked the reaction of captains and count-duke against cannons.
Grenadier is now forbidden to dodge with her smoke bomb if she is currently surprised (!), for the entire surprise duration (even if she's not in an animation blocking her).
Tweaked El Vigilante episode 1 guard regen speed and removed his fatigue bar decay.
Removed Zaida opportunity attacks to make her easier to deal with in group fights in arena mode.
Changed color of enemy guard regen VFX because some player were confusing it with a red attack VFX.
Removed a grid in the wall in the sewers to make the secret entrance where you can roll under easier to see.
Added extra lanterns in episode 2, in a situation where you must use an explosive crate to make it clearer to understand.
Other fixes:
Refactored UI logic to avoid loss of focus and desync of focus between mouse and controller. Should fix the issue preventing to properly rebind buttons when using a controller.
Fixed an issue causing T key on a keyboard being unresponsive when assigned to an input.
Fixes on arena mode modifiers that trigger critical attacks.
Fixes on arena mode modifiers that would prevent to use a special skill properly.
Fixed an issue allowing selection of multiple arena mode modifiers at once instead of one.
'Henchperson Solidarity' modifier won't heal dead enemies anymore.
Controller rumble will stop during level loading.
Dialogues lines are now interrupted when the speaker dies.
Fixed an issue where a secondary gate would open in episode 2 leading to an invisible wall.
Fixed the location of a respawn checkpoint in episode 4.
Added a logic to prevent the same bark from occurring twice in a row.
Fixed an issue causing chickens to always default to the same skin color.
Fixed multiple camera fade issues.
Fixes on statistics on level recap screen.
Fixed timer saved data now correctly recording last level of the episode.
Fixed inconsistency with saved timer when starting a previously played chapter with the main menu's continue button after finishing the previous one and going back to the main menu
Fixed an issue causing arena mode to appear in the wrong place and in the story mode.
Fixed Vigilante constantly going back near the table in episode 4.
Fixed Zaida constantly going to the edge of the bridge in episode 4.
Prevent barks when player is running away from being said before the enemy was ever engaged in fight.
Removed the need to interact with the lever to trigger the boss fight in episode 4, to avoid players being confused by the lever’s utility.
Fix some animations of enemies falling to the ground to make sure characters get up if you attack them while they’re on the ground.
Fixed bark subtitle sometimes not disappearing when NPC despawn falling in water.
Prevent generic death bark playing when an enemy is drowning in water.
Investigate points will now be destroyed if they are in a map loaded in arena mode to make sure they can never ever appear in arena mode.
Fixed localization of arena mode bosses names.
Fixed localization of text for Elite soldiers group tutorial.
Fixed inconsistency with the kick when Zaida has a bucket or turkey on her head.
Fixed an issue causing main menu input bar to not stretch properly.
Enabled preservation of aspect ratio in windowed mode.
In episode 1 weaken tutorial, first lackey is now registered as objective with other lackeys.
Fixed arena music when reloading some arenas.
Fixed impact SFX layer when kicking a door to open it.
Reorder accessibility settings, moved camera assist settings to gameplay page + resized settings row to show more on one screen.
Cauldron is better outlined when aiming at it with a grenade.
Fixed foley sounds on various animations.
Fixed some AI navigation issues.
Various UI improvements.
Various graphical fixes.
Updated credits.

En Garde! launches in only 2 days and we’d like to tell you more about our accessibility and difficulty settings! ⚔ We know that some of you who are interested in En Garde! are hooked by the game’s setting and tone, but are not very familiar playing this kind of action games . 😵
En Garde! launches in only 2 days and we’d like to tell you more about our accessibility and difficulty settings! ⚔
We know that some of you who are interested in En Garde! are hooked by the game’s setting and tone, but are not very familiar playing this kind of action games. 😵
Part of En Garde!’s experience is to overcome difficult combat challenges, not through hardcore perseverance, but rather by understanding how to deal with groups of enemies using your environment to your advantage. 🤺
We want En Garde! to be a welcoming game that anyone can play and have fun with, no matter your level of skill with this kind of games. ✨ However, fights can be very intense and the game is a mechanical challenge because you need to perform parries, dodges, attacks and kicks while paying attention to the enemies around, position to use environmental interactions, etc. 😱
So, we have worked hard to provide a variety of accessibility options for players who need them, but also to make the default experience approachable with an in-depth tutorial level as well as a list of gameplay tips to improve your skills. 😎
Tips & Tricks menu
Accessible at any point from the pause menu, the Tips & Tricks menu is like the “move list” you would find in any traditional beat ‘em up game. But instead of listing endless strings of complicated combos, this menu will give you precious tips on how to improve your fighting with explanations of fencing subtleties, contextual moves, details on environmental interactions, enemies strengths and weaknesses… News tips are added to this menu throughout the whole story campaign, as you encounter new environments or enemies, and as you unlock new special skills.
Difficulty settings
En Garde! has 3 difficulty settings: easy, medium and hard modes. These difficulty modes have an influence on:
Parry and dodge timing windows
Damage caused by player parries and critical strikes (increased in easy mode only)
Number of HP for Adalia
Duration of invulnerability after Adalia got hit
Enemies aggressiveness
Enemy stun time
Assist options
Invincibility: you cannot lose health and die anymore. Use this if you don’t want to play with the challenge of survival.
Automatic parries: for anyone who has trouble with parry timing or reflexes, this will simplify the challenge of fencing. All parries will be automatic, but you can still use the parry button to try a perfect timing. You will still have to dodge red attacks, so stay on your guard!
Camera Auto Focus: the camera turns towards your target automatically while in fight.
Camera Auto Turn: the camera will turn automatically in the direction of your movement while running or sprinting.
Accessible interface
You can modify the scale of HUD, enemy UI and subtitles, or activate the Hyperlegible font for texts.
Input binding
You can rebind keys for any action for both keyboard and gamepad!
That's all for today!

Today, we’d like to introduce the main cast of En Garde!. These 4 main characters are the recurring protagonists of En Garde!’s story episodes!
When you start playing En Garde!, it will feel like you’re jumping in the middle of an old TV series with pre-established characters. Thankfully, these archetypal characters barely need an introduction! They live countless adventures together, and their pasts and destinies don’t matter as much as their interactions with each other.
VO: Clara Cantos
🌟 Adalia, our swashbuckling hero! Renowned throughout the City as a master of the blade, she embodies the essence of daring, playfulness, and unwavering confidence. With her flamboyant style, she is the epitome of a charming scoundrel. ⚔️💫
Adalia has a temper of an archetypal musketeer and she's obviously based on swashbuckling folk heroes like Zorro. But she's also inspired by real-life historical swordswomen, such as Julie d’Aubigny!
VO: Julien Masdoua
🎭 Alejandro is Adalia's younger brother! Enthusiastic, ditzy, noble. He's a playwright and never runs out of ideas to make his sister shine. 🌟 What he lacks in skill and foresight, he makes up for in unwavering idealism. 💫✨ Some people pretend he leads a double life as a masked hero, known as El Vigilante... But they are obviously not the same person.
Alejandro’s main inspirations are old-school bombastic characters played by actor Errol Flynn!
VO: Angela Leblanc
🧭 Here is the enigmatic Zaida... Her captivating allure comes with a razor-sharp wit and a mysterious past. What is her link to Adalia and where do her allegiances truly lie? 🏴☠️🗺️
Zaida is inspired by pirates and burglar characters such as Carmen Sandiego.
VO: Mathieu Lagarrigue
👺 Beware the nefarious Count Duke, Adalia's ultimate nemesis! Neither his arrogance nor his lust for power know any bounds. He rules with an iron fist and nothing but contempt for those beneath him. He may have military power, but his pettiness might be used against him... 🏰
The Count-Duke is loosely based on his real-life counterpart, but we turned him into a cartoon villain!
Can't wait to meet these flamboyant characters? Don't forget to wishlist En Garde! now and get ready for its release on August 16th!

Each episode features a unique story, themes, set pieces, locations, characters, enemies, combat situations and challenges to complete! Meet Adalia's formidable rivals and precious allies on your way to stop the shenanigans of the nefarious Count-Duke, and free the City from tyranny! In-between fights, you can learn more about the game's backstory and lore by finding points of interest and secrets scattered through the levels.
Arena Mode!
Arena mode is a re-playable arcade experience, for you to enjoy En Garde!'s combat to your heart's content! Here are the rules: survive a series of randomized combat arenas filled with surprising environmental setups and deadly waves of enemies. Between each arena, a new gameplay modifier will buff your enemies and make your next fight a bit more tricky... But you'll be able to pick between 3 positive modifiers to counter it and maximise your chances of triumph. Choose wisely! The game features more than 60 modifiers that can all be combined, leading to a huge variety of fight situations! The fight banter dialogue system will keep playing during the arena mode to keep you in the mood of a true swashbuckling adventure!
