In a FREE update to Beneath on Steam - you can now challenge yourselves to survive against a terror that never ends. The Final Stand is a brand new horde mode where you will be placed on one of 3 maps. With limited ammo and 3 a minute timer you will be forced to kill the horrors of the deep to increase your time limit and score. We've also dropped a few more fixes that we've been working on.
Each of the maps has a different layout and features different enemies, features and weapons.
Only one thing is certain, you WILL die, but how long you last and how high you make it on the online leaderboards? That's entirely down to you and your ability to fight the relentless hordes.

Hey everyone,
First things first: thank you. Truly. Since launch, you’ve been diving into Beneath, sharing feedback, reporting bugs, posting clips, arguing lovingly about weapons, and generally helping us shape the game into something better than what we shipped on day one. We’ve been listening, fixing, tweaking, and tuning, patch by patch, and this update is both a celebration of that journey and a promise that we’re not done yet.
Today we’re excited to roll out something a little different.
Retro Mode Is Here. And It’s Free.
Retro Mode is now live on PC, Epic, GOG, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, and it’s available to everyone at no extra cost – because stepping back in time shouldn’t cost a cent.
Retro Mode is a fun visual overhaul inspired by the late 90s, when pixels were chunky, screens glowed like haunted aquariums, and horror relied on suggestion as much as spectacle. Same combat. Same pacing. Same suffocating deep-sea tension. Just wrapped in crunchy resolution, CRT vibes, and that “up too late with the lights off” energy.
Low-res horror hits differently. Shadows feel heavier. Shapes feel less certain. And when you’re already rationing ammo and sanity, uncertainty is not your friend.
Since launch, we’ve shipped multiple patches addressing performance, stability, balance, and quality-of-life improvements across all platforms. Some of these changes are invisible. Others are the result of very passionate, very helpful community feedback - but all of them exist because people cared enough to speak up and stick with us.
Retro Mode lands on top of all those improvements. If you bounced off early, this is a great time to dive back in. If you’ve been waiting on the sidelines, the game you play today is stronger, smoother, and more confident than it was at launch.
The flashlight can now be turned on when sanity is low.
Adjusted the difficulty of the Lost City's boss fight on "Tourist Pass".
Increased walking speed in flooded locations.
Fixed an issue where Quinn's hand position may be incorrect if firing the RV-12 immediately after reloading.
The oxygen machine in Ivavov station is now an appropriate size.
Fixed an issue where firing immediately after switching to the RV-12 may cause the weapon to disappear.
Fixed an issue where firing while facing a keypad would cause the gun to shake without shooting.
Fixed an issue where stamina didn't recover when at minimum levels, after clicking on an audiolog.
Fixed an issue where the active weapon may disappear when resuming a game where the crowbar was active.
Fixed an issue where handguns with suppressors couldn't destroy the yellow bulbous sacs.
Fixed several culling issues in different levels, where objects could be seen appearing or disappearing.
Fixed an issue where soldiers could enter a door that was supposed to be locked in Shirazi station.
Fixed an issue where the it was possible to die while climbing down the submarine ladder in Shirazi station.
Fixed the description on the Crowbar.
Fixed an issue where a cutscene played improperly when a creature appears for the first time.
Fixed a number of lamps that were emitting a different colored light.
Several localization fixes.
Fixed LOD issues on some props, reducing the amount of pop-in.
Fixed a number of issues where Quinn's hands look wrong in specific animations.
Fixed an issue where the last level's loading screen text wouldn't appear in Japanese.
Fixed an issue on Bauer Station that could be triggered if the player proceeded to the next objective without first meeting the doctor.
What Beneath Is (And Always Was)
Beneath is a slow-burn survival horror game. It’s deliberate. It’s tense. It wants you to stop, listen, and feel the pressure closing in. You play as Noah Quinn, a seasoned diver whose routine expedition collapses into something far worse, trapping him deep under the ocean alongside an ancient and hostile presence.
This isn’t about running fast or spraying bullets. It’s about surviving long enough to understand what’s happening, and deciding how far you’re willing to go once you do.
Looking Ahead to 2026
Retro Mode is the first step in a longer journey. We’ve already confirmed more major updates, including New Game Plus, cheats, and Horde mode. Beneath will continue to evolve into 2026, and we’ll keep sharing details as things solidify.
One Last Thing
Whether you’ve been with us since day one or you’re just now considering the dive, thank you for supporting Beneath. Your time, your trust, and your patience mean everything to a small team making a very moody game at the bottom of the ocean.
Retro Mode is live. The pressure is on. And the water is still very, very dark.

We'll speak soon with more information on the upcoming retro mode!

Hello everyone,
It's been a very busy month since launch - with a mixture of celebrations, excitement, and of course, updates! We've been diligently working through the list of bugs identified as they pop up, as well as making note of some suggestions and feedback you are sharing in the forums and socials.
Today we'd like to take a quick breather and share with you the plans we have ahead for Beneath with our Roadmap!
The TLDR is that on December 18th we'll be launching our first post launch content update, absolutely free - then in 2026 adding some quality of life features based on your feedback, and an all new game mode that will test your combat skills to the max.
Let's have a quick run through of what each of these updates are!
Retro Mode
Bringing you bleeding edge visuals (circa 1998) Retro mode brings the same combat, the same oppressive deep sea horror, but reborn in glorious low resolution. Retro mode combines some adjusted visual presentation and filter techniques to bring back the 'sat in front of the tv cross legged at midnight' nostalgia, and if we do say so ourselves... really adds a distinct charm to our nightmare filled research stations. Here's a little teaser of what it looks like in motion...
You can get your hands on this update on December 18th, for a very pixelated Xmas treat!
New Game+
We've had some requests to add in a New Game+ feature for those that want to jump straight back in - and we are absolutely here for it.
We're still fleshing out exactly WHAT this looks like, from a design challenge perspective (after all - the early boat encounter and 'pre-pistol finding' portion of the game would feel mighty different if you were running round with a boomstick and a pocketful of grenades) and figuring exactly what the power fantasy here lands with, we'll keep you updated as we plan it out.
Cheats
For the low low price of $5.99 - ha, just kidding. No paying for the cheats here. We're working on some fun cheats for you - some of course deliberately game breaking (infinite ammo and god mode make the scares a bit more bearable), some a bit.. silly (no spoilers yet)
We're discussing exactly how we want these to be activated / enabled for players - maybe straight up code entry like back in the 90's with no limitations - maybe you unlock them finding collectibles (kinda like halo skulls), maybe its just a campaign progression that unlocks more as you go - as with the new game+ we'll keep you posted on our thoughts and respond to yours!
Horde Mode
We get it, sometimes you wanna boot up a retro indie shooter and blast some undead ancient evil. But sometimes you don't wanna go through a couple of hours of exposition, or deal with backtracking, or 'God not THIS part of the game' (every game has one).
We're putting together a horde mode, based on segmented areas of the facilities. No Story, just you, your guns, some powerups and endless waves of eldritch horrors craving your flesh.
This one is a little later in the 2026 pipeline as it will require substantial work to shape into what we want - but we'll keep you all updated as we progress!
So there you have it, there's much more to come (on top of all the additional updates, bug fixes and anything else that pops up along the way)
Thank you all so much for joining us down here in the depths, we can't wait to share more with you about all of these updates!
In the mean time, keep letting us know your thoughts, please be sure to leave an honest review if you've played the game - share it with your friends, and we'll see you on December 18th - with a few less pixels!
Hello everyone, hope you've enjoyed your week! We have a few updates here for you covering a new patch, community items - and a compilation of some of our favourite moments we've seen from creators! Let's get to it! Patch Notes Starting off with the important stuff - a new patch

Hey Divers, First off: thank you again for diving into Beneath, playing, streaming, sharing your experiences, and helping us uncover what works - and what doesn’t. As a two‑person studio, we’re deeply committed to making this game as smooth and scary as possible. Below is a breakdown of the main bugs that will be fixed with this patch.
Fixed arms clipping in some animations.
Fixed the issue that allowed gunfire from the running position.
Fixed the issue that allowed gunfire right after closing the inventory, before the weapon was visible.
Fixed a couple of missing collisions.
Fixed the issue where some players were stuck just after meeting Nicole and grabbing the handgun.
Decreased the shadow opacity (so it's not pure black).
Fixed the issue where the safe code wasn't displaying correctly in a computer in Shirazi Station
Tweaks to the soldier AI to prevent shooting when the player is not in sight.
Adjusted the reload speed of Scar, M4 & AK weapons.
Reloading weapons can now happen when sanity is triggered.
The door has been re-opened in Girard when coming back to open the safe.
Extinguishers will no longer already be exploded in Ivanov when meeting Gaggith.
What Else We’re Doing
We’re already working on further patches targeting the other bugs reported.
Visual asset enhancements and optimization work are ongoing; we'll roll out these gradually.
We’re reading all your feedback (forums, reviews, streams) and prioritizing issues based on severity and frequency.
About Micro Stutters
We've had some reports of people playing on 4k resolution monitors with high refresh rates (120hz and above) encountering performance issues. This is something we are looking into and testing across various monitors and configurations to identify the cause. Whilst we look into this, we ask that anyone experiencing these issues please drop a comment in our bug section of steam forums with your GPU, CPU, and type of drive you have Beneath installed on so we can get as many variations confirmed of people encountering this (especially important if you are NOT running 4k or above 60fps) Thank you for your patience whilst we investigate this, we'll be updating you all as soon as we have some conclusive updates!
Thank You & Stay In Touch
Your feedback is invaluable. Every bug report, screenshot, clip, review and stream helps us make Beneath better. If you encounter something not listed above, please drop it in our Steam Discussions or share a ticket with specs, reproduction steps, etc. We’re committed to supporting this game long‑term, improving the experience, and making the depths you explore feel immersive, stable and scary.
Thanks for playing, thanks for diving deep, and thanks for helping us fix the rough edges.

When you descend into the depths of Beneath, you’re not just fighting for your life - you’re fighting for your mind.
The Sanity mechanic lies at the heart of what makes Beneath so unsettling. Each time you come face-to-face with an Eldritch creature, the very fabric of your perception begins to unravel. Your pulse races, your vision distorts, and reality itself starts to fray. The more your mind fractures, the more exposed your body becomes.
In practical terms, the lower your Sanity, the more damage you take from enemy attacks. Terror doesn’t just haunt you - it weakens you. When your mind succumbs to fear, your physical defenses crumble, leaving you more vulnerable than ever. You’ll have to balance your resources carefully, using ammo, medication, and willpower to keep your grip on reality intact… because once it slips too far, survival becomes almost impossible.
How long can you last before your own mind turns against you?
