We know our updates have become infrequent these past months, and for that, we want to be transparent. Development challenges and unexpected delays played a part, but another big reason for our quietness was a deliberate choice - we learned from past experience that revealing too much and too early can sometimes spoil the spine-chilling first encounter we aim to deliver. We’ve become cautious, carefully selecting what horrors to unveil, to make your eventual playthrough as impactful and terrifying as possible. But as we get closer to the finish line, we will reveal more for you to enjoy.
What Lies Ahead?
Despite these challenges, we've been making steady progress! Our team has poured countless hours into refining puzzles designed to twist your mind and level designs crafted to immerse you in the harrowing atmosphere of the Body Farm and The Underworld. On top of that, we've been refining new and existing enemy encounters to ensure each confrontation is unforgettable - and thoroughly unsettling.
And yes, we do hear your curiosity loud and clear! Soon, we'll be dropping a new trailer that will shed a flickering light on the nightmares awaiting you in Dark Fracture. Stay tuned!

Some say in a few years we’ll all be eating insects. Well, you may find that in Dark Fracture a role-reversal of sorts awaits you. We’ve been hard at work getting new models for the game and today we’re ready to show you one of them and take you on a journey through its creation.
Skittering… will it ever stop?
Let’s get to the meat of this devlog. Do insects count as meat? Regardless, last you’ve heard from us, it was still 2021 and we took a closer look at the realm we dubbed “The Underworld”. This time, we bring you one of the horrors that leaked into reality from said Underworld, or... did they? In your day-to-day routine on the body farm, you may find your workflow interrupted by some of these hideous mutated insectoids. They may be small in size but there’s power in numbers.
Some of the initial concepts of the insect
As far as the design goes, we wanted to go with something that is almost universally considered repulsive. You’ll be hard-pressed to find someone who isn’t at least a little peeved by the sighting of an oversized insect. Of course, there is beauty to be found anywhere and the detail on our new critter certainly has some aesthetic appeal, if I could say so myself. Another reason for choosing insects? Dark Fracture’s atmosphere really hinges on this alien and eerie feeling and bugs have for years been used as prototypes for designing alien creatures. Their anatomy lends itself perfectly to creating monsters that make us feel uneasy because in real life we never see insects in these proportions and with so much detail, and they look nothing like the animals we’re used to seeing day-to-day.
Model after numerous iterations
As you can see in the images above, the design has come a long way from the initial draft. Aside from the model gaining a lot more detail and definition, there were a lot of design changes. We’ve settled on a much angrier looking skull, the mandibles gained a much more exaggerated, carnivorous-alien-here-to-devour-you feeling, and surprise, surprise, it has wings now. Oh, God.

Even then, our work was not done, as the critter had to be textured, and we were still working out little kinks, the biggest of them being the design of the wings. Here you can see one of the early iterations:
At this point, the design was really coming together, and it soon culminated in the final look of the monster. That’s what you’ve been waiting for, haven’t you? Well, we’ll show you the final product in a second, but first, we’ve prepared a little texturing breakdown time-lapse of the model. Enjoy:

What’s happening in the real world
EVENTS
Back on Earth, not unlike our insect buddy, we’ve been quite the busy bees. While most of the showcases are taking place online, it has not tempered our spirits and we’re spreading the Dark Fracture gospel at all of them. There are a lot of events happening so let’s take them one at a time.
We’ve just recently taken part in the Intel Showcase at Hamburg Games Conference, which was mostly a biz dev event but we were nonetheless happy to be part of this very impressive lineup. Our publisher Feardemic also held an event which they aptly named the Feardemic’s Fear Fest, where they showcased new trailers from their upcoming titles, Dark Fracture, as you may have guessed, being one of them. If you missed it, you can watch the FFF trailer here:
We have also been honored to get featured at The MIX 10th Anniversary Online Showcase which has previously given stage to such wonderful, critically-acclaimed titles as DARQ or Eldest Souls. Standing next to such giants was definitely incredibly exciting.
As far as live events go, we visited WASD in London, this led to this hilarious compilation of people jumping in their seats while playing Dark Fracture: Prologue.
People seemed to enjoy the Prologue quite a lot which really gave us the motivation to keep working on Dark Fracture. We really love seeing the fans’ reactions, because it’s you guys that we do this for. If you were one of the people we scared at the event make sure to let us know in the comments. Moving from the past into the present, we have a few events coming up, most notably Digital Dragons 2022 where we’re a part of their Indie Showcase, and Indie Live Expo which included us in their INDIE Live Premiere segment. DD2022 takes place on May 12-13, and will show off 40 selected titles on Steam before the conference, and then let you play them during it, so look out for Dark Fracture. As for ILE, you’ll be able to catch us on day 2 of the event (May 22) on their stream.

Of course, we wouldn’t be writing to you just to remind you of FFF now, would we? That’s right, this time we’d like to announce a new event. A competition. Black Summer Remix Competition.
What exactly is the Black Summer Remix Competition? To explain that, we’ll have to acquaint you with Black Summer first. Feardemic has its own band, The Feardemic Orchestra, and it’s been known to, from time to time, create amazing songs for their published titles. Black Summer, a piece created specifically for Dark Fracture! Listen to it below.

We’re organizing a Black Summer Remix Competition, where you can put your own spin on the track and get your remix featured in the game Dark Fracture and on the official soundtrack!
First, you head on over to https://fearfest.online/bsc and download the stems (that is, the song separated into tracks by instrument), then you get to work on your masterpiece. The song has to include at least ONE (1) element from the track. There are absolutely no conditions, genre requirements, or length restrictions except that it must be ‘G’ rated, meaning no nasty words. Other than that, you are free to include extra lyrics, raps, or other cleared samples. Once you’re done, you save your file using the format YOURNAME X FEARDEMIC ORCHESTRA – Black Summer and use the form on the aforementioned site to submit your entry. You have time until March 5, 11:59 pm CET to submit your work. After that, all the submissions will be evaluated by a panel consisting of judges from Twisted II Studio, Feardemic, and The Feardemic Orchestra themselves. We will announce the winner of the competition at the end of Feardemic’s Fear Fest 2022, so don’t miss it!

An update on the latest developments
A recap of the industry events we have attended over the past month and a half
Imagination is a powerful tool: since the dawn of time, humanity has used it to bend the laws of logic and nature to escape reality in the only place in which none of them apply - the mind. But what if there is a place in which thought takes a physical, tangible shape? Today, we want to take into consideration such a possibility by talking to you about the most mysterious part of Dark Fracture!
Welcome to the Underworld
In the last couple of devblogs we have talked a lot about the body farm — an eerie but actually real kind of research facility, as well as the workplace of Dark Fracture protagonist, Edward. The body farm is not the sole environment Edward will explore in the full release of Dark Fracture. Those of you who have played the Dark Fracture: Prologue demo till the end had a glimpse of some very obscure and unearthly place that looks like coming straight out of a Beksiński artwork (that's not accidental - more on that later). For the sake of the conversation, from now on we will refer to that place as the 'Underworld'.
The Underworld is a place (is it though?) in which inanimate and living matter seem to merge together in forming shapes and surfaces that resemble nothing like the world we know. The laws of physics are bent, environments do not follow euclidean principles, and its creatures and objects look alien to us.
While so far we have hinted at the possibility that the Underworld is the fruit of whimsical imagination, we cannot avoid asking ourselves why someone would fantasize about a place that is so terrifying and dangerous to themselves. Sure, the world is full of people with unusual kinks, but that doesn't seem to be the case with our protagonist Edward, whose life has been harmful enough to not need to make it more miserable.
Moving from hypothetical to factual information, the visual representation of the Underworld is inspired by multiple creative sources: the biomechanical designs of Swiss artist H.R. Giger, the surreal & melancholic landscapes of Polish painter Zdzisław Beksiński, and some of the otherworldly locations described in the horror stories of American writer H.P. Lovecraft.
While the creations of these artists are very different from each other, all of them possessed a very vivid imagination, which they used to introduce terrifying thoughts in our collective minds.
By using these sources of inspiration, we aim to blend proven concepts of terror with our vision of the Underworld, a place that might or might not be real - but that's for you, the player, to decide when you will venture into the release version of Dark Fracture, coming in 2022.
What's happening in the real world
Events
In the real world (the actual one), over the past month and a half we have been quite spreading awareness about our game in different events, both physical and digital ones. It all started in early October with EGX in London, our first physical event since the global pandemic began. Visitors had the chance to play the Dark Fracture: Prologue demo in person and win Dark Fracture merchandise by completing the demo in less than 25 minutes - which turned out to be such an attractive opportunity that by the third day of the event we ran out of t-shirts. Nevertheless, people kept coming in, and we received some very positive feedback from most of the players.
After that, Dark Fracture appeared on the physical show floor of Busan Indie Connect in Korea (unfortunately we couldn't be there, but Dark Fracture: Prologue had a booth), followed by the digital ones of Indie Live Expo and Megamigs. On the latter, Dark Fracture has received a nomination for Best Audio & Soundtrack - while that isn't an award, having been only one of the few games selected for competing for that prize among dozens of participants was certainly a privilege.
Production
Given these circumstances, the development has been slowed down a bit, but is proceeding nonetheless. These are the main highlights:
We have continued to focus on accessibility, for example by adding the settings option to interact with doors & drawers by either using drag 'n' drop movements or the simple click of a button
We are improving and testing the language of missions & objective scripts to make them clearer to anyone and avoid confusing the players
2D images & art in the game are being improved
New pieces of equipment are getting implemented, including but not limited to a compass, a walkie-talkie, and some more mysterious and deadly tools...

Happy Spooktober, and welcome to the 11th development blog of Dark Fracture 🎃
As the virus-that-shall-not-be-named is loosening its grip on the world, things are slowly getting back to normal, and physical events are making a comeback. For the first time in almost two years, Dark Fracture: Prologue is playable at a physical location, more specifically at the show floor of EGX in London. If you happen to live in the capital of UK, don’t miss the chance to visit the event and grab some free merch at our booth!
Of course, we haven’t made a whole devlog just to tell you we are attending some event around the world. The last month has been quite intense for the development of Dark Fracture, and we want to share with you some of the highlights.
The body farm is growing
One of the most morbid yet fascinating aspects of real body farms is how many different “decomposition scenarios” are prepared to allow scientists as many different case studies as possible – bodies are placed on grass or dirt, unearthed or semi-buried, submerged in water or mud, exposed to insects and fauna or partially protected, and so on.
This variety allows for multiple scientific disciplines (forensics, biology, and entomology just to name a few) to be involved in the research, thus requiring appropriate laboratories to be available on the site. Add to that the metaphysical nature of Dark Fracture and how isolated our body farm is, and you can imagine how fast grows the need for virtual space for the characters of our game.
All of this is to say that the body farms environment is getting bigger and more facilities are being added to it. The teasers we released so far no longer do justice to what the body farm is becoming, and you can expect some very interesting shots in the future.
New gameplay and visual features
We often ask ourselves: how can we make Edward’s life more miserable (and scare the player more)?
Lately, we have figured that claustrophobia could be a fantastic way to achieve that, and while open-air environments remain a staple of the body farm, crawl spaces are now a thing. Take a look at this gif and observe Edward dragging himself through a twisted vent:
Moreover, as we want to raise the quality bar of our game and make it distinguishably superior to the original Dark Fracture: Prologue, characters movements are being enhanced, the UI is getting an overhaul to be more pleasant to the eye, and more interactions are being added.
For example, doors and drawers can now be physically moved using the mouse:

More accessibility options
We cannot stress enough how much the feedback we received on Dark Fracture: Prologue has been helped us to understand the players' needs. That is why, due to popular demand, we added a lot of new game settings to give better control to players, including but not limited to a customizable field of view, chromatic aberration, brightness, crosshair size, subtitles settings:

Dark Fracture: Prologue localization is still ongoing
As we have mentioned in our previous devlog, the localization of Dark Fracture: Prologue (coming in French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Russian, Chinese) has proven to be quite labor-intensive. That doesn’t mean is not ongoing, and we are looking forward to releasing the update by the end of the year.

Prologue localization is on the way
One of the challenges of making a first-person horror adventure as an indie developer is not falling into the trap of becoming "just another indie horror on Steam". We believe that the solution relies on two keywords: quality and authenticity. How did we plan to implement them? Let's start explaining from the latter.
Have you ever wondered why the protagonists of many indie first-person horror games never actually meet other human characters during their adventures? The reason is simple: humans are complicated beings to represent digitally. While the appearance and behavior of fantastical creatures can be shaped in any way the developer desires, a human that doesn't behave or appear as such inevitably ends up looking uncanny. That is why most developers choose to introduce characters through diaries, audio logs, radio communications, and so on. However, we have decided to take the risk.
Some time ago, during the Reddit AMA, we revealed that Dark Fracture will not be your typical indie horror and actually has extra characters present as NPCs for our protagonist, Edward, to interact with. A facility like the body farm, albeit unique, needs more than just Edward to be run — which means he won't be the sole employee. Colleagues, however, won't be the only characters Edward will meet - take a look at this mysterious figure that wanders around the compound 👇

While there is still a lot of work to do before we will be able to call Dark Fracture a high-quality game, we can confidently say that the bar has raised significantly since Dark Fracture: Prologue. 3D models and textures are being improved, and we have even started using mocap and lipsync technologies to make animations smoother. As earlier announced, Dark Fracture: Prologue is being localized in 7 languages:
French
Italian
Spanish
Portuguese
German
Russian
Chinese
As the integration of certain alphabets is particularly complicated and the development of the complete version of Dark Fracture takes priority over updating the Prologue, the localization update release will take a couple of months.

1) WE HAVE FOUND A NEW PUBLISHER - FEARDEMIC
If you have noticed the recent changes on our store page, this shouldn’t come as a surprise. Feardemic is a publisher of horror games from Poland and is part of the same company behind psychological horror games such as Layers of Fear, The Medium, Observer – I’m obviously talking of Bloober Team.
How will the cooperation with the publisher impact the development of Dark Fracture?
The role of Feardemic is to provide resources to develop Dark Fracture more efficiently, bring the game to all consoles, and help to make it more popular. All the creative decisions regarding Dark Fracture will belong solely to us, the developers, and we will release the game only when it is truly ready — which brings us to the next update...
2) THE GAME WILL BE RELEASED IN 2022 AS A FULL, NON-EARLY ACCESS GAME
Nobody likes delays, but if there’s one thing that 2020 taught us, it is that people like incomplete games even less. This is the reason why we have decided to move away from Early Access and thus postpone the release to 2022 – to offer you a complete and well-polished horror experience.
When exactly is Dark Fracture going to be released?
It’s too soon to say when exactly it is going to be released, but both we and Feardemic will make sure to communicate any update here on Steam and any other relevant channel.
3) DARK FRACTURE WILL BE AVAILABLE ON SIX DIFFERENT PLATFORMS
That’s right – Dark Fracture is coming to PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch!
Initially, Dark Fracture was conceived for PC and next-gen consoles only, but considering the ongoing global situation caused by semiconductor shortages, scalpers, and miners, we want to make sure that people will be able to play our game on their favorite device without having to spend crazy amounts of money.
Obviously, PC will always be the best place to play it ;)
4) DARK FRACTURE: PROLOGUE WILL BE SOON AVAILABLE IN 7 DIFFERENT LANGUAGES
Dark Fracture: Prologue has been out for a while now, but that doesn’t mean we have stopped updating it. The next big update is localization, as the Prologue is currently being translated into:
