We are very excited to announce that Midnight Protocol was selected as a nominee in the 2022 IndieCade Festival! That was totally IndieCade's decision and not the result of hacking into a few databases. Totally.
We've been nominated for the Systemic Design award. What does that mean? Well:
The Systemic Design Award honors the craft of leveraging randomness and algorithmic content or behavior to create unique and innovative interactions.
And that's not all! Apart from being specifically nominated for the Systemic Design award, we're also up for the Grand Jury Award, Jury Prix, Innovation in Experience Design, Innovation in Interaction Design, and Developer's Choice Awards!

Hey everyone! We have a major update for you today! Featuring the completion of the real time mode, community-made Japanese localization, new ICE to use in custom campaigns and an update to the Chinese localization. Read on down below for details!
Patch notes:

Added community-made Japanese Localization to the game. All credit goes to Masaru Funahashi and his team for this amazing effort!
Completed real time mode, you can now enjoy the full game in real time!
Added 2 new pieces of ICE for you to use in custom campaigns: Medusa and SYNC. Medusa is a high HP piece of ICE that will not punish you for running into it but triggers whenever you try to reveal it. For instance, when you use Sniffer on Medusa, you will trigger its ability. SYNC is a low HP barrier-type ICE that starts visible on the network. A single piece of SYNC is fairly easy to deal with, but be careful, because destroying one piece of SYNC will make all other SYNC ICE on the network more powerful.
Updated the Chinese localization to include terms that you can look up on the intranet, since it is not possible to search the intranet with Chinese characters.

General Patch notes:

The issue with the popups being broken after testing a custom map has been resolved
Fixed a graphical issue where the credits count at the end of the mission was incorrect
Fixed an issue where you couldn't change the loadout in The Dog Pound mission during a rollback
Fixed the issue where decoy would not auto remove or release its turn after the duration expired This has now been replaced with a more paradigm-fitting message. (Since "void" is not really a thing here).
Made it so that various API calls also log errors to in-game console.
Fixed issue in PinionCompiler where variable declaration with two arguments broke
Added a HasICE method to the API
Campaign Patch notes:

You can now create a custom network turn
You can now create and manage global mission variables
Added activate bridge node event
Added event for when you input an incorrect password into a vault node
Added events for the encryption node: when the encryption is lowered and when the node is disabled. Please note that an encryption node can also be disabled by programs such as Damocles, and not just by interfacing with the node.
Added network events for when the player turn ends and for when the mission starts
Added an indicator to show which campaigns are local
Changing the title of a mission in the network editor will now update the name of the mission in the campaign screen as well
Fixed the placeholder text for the portscanner input fields in the network editor
You can no longer specify a negative number for Add/RemoveCredits
Fix for issue where MyMethod "argument" would compile without parenthesis
When using a method returning void in an variable assignment, compiler complained the method returned void. This has now been replaced with a more paradigm-fitting message. (Since "void" is not really a thing here).

Thank you for your patience as we continue to hammer out the custom campaign editor. There were 2 major issues preventing people from both uploading their creations to the workshop and playing them. Both of these should be resolved. Keep in mind that in order to enjoy workshop content, you need to accept Steam's EULA.
If you were itching to upload your own creation, keep in mind that you will have to re-upload your campaign following this update.
Thank you for your continued feedback! The Campaign Editor is a complex feature and your voice has been invaluable. Keep it coming!
Full change list is below. It's a doozy. In addition, we added a more general scripting overview to the website. The API documentation has also been updated, appending a few new functions and fixing some examples that were wrong.
General changes:

Hive now shows its total damage on its program card
Fixed the audio blast that could happen while the game does not have focus and sundrops are in play
Campaign Editor:

Fixed an issue where only players who had created custom campaigns could play them
Fixed an issue that prevented players from uploading their custom campaigns to the workshop
Added scriptable logic to the vault node
Added scriptable logic to the financial node
Fixed the OnEnter event not triggering
Removed the script button from node connections
You can now encrypt System Nodes as well
Fixed an issue where multiple data nodes would show the same content while testing the mission. Please note that you will have to reopen the network in the map editor and save it for the bug to go away.
The port scanner now shows the correct node types for custom missions
You can add your own port scanner information for custom missions (up to 3)
You can now define a custom name for the player in a custom campaign. If this name is set, the campaign will show a custom login screen when starting the campaign.
The mission property window got a visual overhaul
The "Create new mission" button was renamed to "Create new network"
You can now configure the starting credits for your custom campaign
Added a button to the main menu that will lead you to the workshop
Added audio to the map editor load
Fixed the sound blast when creating nodes
Added a credits node to the logic graph
Added a "credits required" to the player email responses
Added a Play SFX api, allowing you to play custom sound effects from an audio folder
Added a "Remove Mission" node to the logic graph
Added "Relay" node to the logic graph, which will just forward its signal
Added an IncreaseTrace method to the API
Added a DecreaseTrace method to the API
Added a GetTrace method to the API
Added a SetCameraZoom method to the API
Fixed an issue where deleting a node did not delete the associated script files
Fixed an issue where deleting a node did not delete the SysOp if it was present
The following is now disabled during a custom campaign: The intranet, the people tab in the information screen, the edge of the net app, the audio app, the challenges in the status screen, the unlock messages in the status screen.
Clover's Gambit is renamed to "m.OS - Core" in custom campaigns
While using escape to exit a network you are testing while in the network editor, you will now return to the network editor.
Fixed the TAB control in the vault node and data node property window
Added an icon to the logic graph to indicate how to pan the camera (MMB + move mouse)

We're back with even more exciting news. Earlier this week we mentioned a bunch of cool things like awards and Humble Choice, and the ride doesn't stop there. We're very excited to announce that Midnight Protocol's Campaign Editor is now available in beta!
First: yes, you saw that correctly. The modding tool allows you to use your mouse. The keyboard purists among you may consider it heresy, but trust us when we say it's much easier to create your own campaigns this way!
As the name implies, the Campaign Editor allows you to create your own campaign from scratch.
Write e-mails from strangers.
Then write the player's potential responses.
Create a mission very easily with your handy dandy cursor!
Change the parameters of nodes.
And give your creation a try.
It's not just standalone missions. Through the logic tab you can tie everything together into a beautiful campaign of your own!
When you're done creating your campaign, upload it to the Steam Workshop so others can play through it!
We believe the tool is pretty easy to use, but we've also written a guide to help you get started. Give it a try and let us know what you think! We've created a modding channel on Discord where you can ask questions and show off your creations. Of course, there's also a dedicated Steam forum!
The Campaign Editor is still in beta, so your feedback is important. If it sees a lot of use, we'll continue improving it!

Hey everyone! We're still hard at work on an exciting update which we'll be sharing soon, but in the meantime, we have noticed some people were having issues with the game soft locking since the last update. We're happy to report that that issue should have been fixed. Full patch notes are below.

Fixed the soft lock issue: A lot of you were experiencing soft lock issues where the exit command wouldn't work or a data node wouldn't finish downloading. This issue happened if you restarted a mission after you failed it, which can happen quite easily in the race missions, for example. This issue has now been resolved.
Trace chance is now visible: Whenever the trace happens in turn-based mode, you can see the %chance you had for the trace to fail. There was some confusion on how different trace effects stacked and we hope this change will make that more transparent.
Alias command has been upgraded: The alias command now allows for multi-word values when you use double quotations. Are you using 'cloak 4' often? You can make your own command for it! Like so: 'alias hide "cloak 4"'. From that point onward, you can use the 'hide' command, which the game will translate into 'cloak 4'.

As 2021 is coming to a close, we wanted to give you a little present heading into the new year: Real-time mode for Act 2 of Midnight Protocol!
Want to fill your holiday season with some blood-pumping hacking action? Don't feel like going to the theater to watch The Matrix? Then this update is for you! Act 2 in real-time should present you with some seriously challenging networks, and we're excited to see how quickly you can tackle these missions.
In 2022 you can expect the final real-time update (Act 3), as well as a campaign editor that allows you to create your own missions, e-mail chains, and more!

Act 2 of the real-time mode (up until the Dog Pound mission)
Fixed a bug where Vorpal sword would mess with your deck slots if you rollback after unlocking it
The jabberwock used to take half damage from breakers that were not the Vorpal Sword, that wasn't communicated clearly, so now the jabberwock just has a double healthbar instead!
Fixed certain challenges not working on the Monarch mission
Fixed the real time description of certain programs that were still displaying the turn based version instead.
Added a fast-forward feature: You can now skip through certain 'cutscenes' in the game by holding down 'TAB'. This feature is most prevalent in Act 3.
Minor bugfixes

Damocles now needs 1 slice to operate
Added the alias and unalias command to add you own custom aliases to the console.
Grendel will now eat you if you move behind the line willingly (Depth First mission).
Removed the double popup issue when the first berlin mission appears
The turn off glitch and screenshake options were switched around, that is now fixed.
Fixed the "End_This" message at the start of the Midnight Protocol mission
Fixed the barricade description showing the real-time version in turn-based mode.
Fixed a bug in the Force Quit mission that put the mission in deadlock.
Fixed a bug where The Hooks in the On The Hook missions could be bypassed by copy, harpoon, or gatekeeper, leaving the player signal in an invalid state

We just wanted to post a quick update to thank you all for playing! We're thrilled to see how you've all been enjoying our take on the hacking genre. We set out to make something unique and different, and it looks like we've succeeded based on the experiences you've shared.

We got a few questions here and there about how folks can best support the game (other than buying and playing, of course). First, thank you for asking! Here are two things that would be of great help:
1. Tell your friends/family/favorite streamer about the game
2. Leave a review on Steam
Leaving a review is very helpful for indie games like Midnight Protocol, as it helps us get higher up in the Steam charts. It also helps future players figure out if the game is right for them, so it's a win-win!
Future plans!
Of course, we've also been asked what we're planning on doing with Midnight Protocol down the line. High up on our priority list is finishing the real-time mode so that the whole game can be played in two vastly different ways.
Second, and this one is very much still under consideration, is Steam Workshop support. We imagine it'd be really cool for you to be able to create your own experiences, and share them with the rest of the community. Again, this is just something we're considering right now, so no promises yet!

Real-time mode engaged
Midnight Protocol actually started out as a prototype with real-time mechanics. It quickly became apparent, however, that the real-time mode was very stressful, especially when you're still coming to grips with all of the game's systems. Experiencing Midnight Protocol with a live counter ticking down was still something very special so we included a real-time mode with the demo.
Come launch day, the real-time mode was not included with the game. As the game grew, real-time mode needed a lot of custom work for certain programs and missions that rely heavily on the turn-based nature of the game, often leading to a complete redo of the program/hardware/mission/challenge. But fret not! Real-time mode is still on its way, and we will be releasing it incrementally. With v1.1.0, you can choose to start a new game in real-time mode, if you have completed the tutorial at least once. The real-time mode will work up until the end of Act I (The Trench mission). If you were looking for an excuse to revisit the game, the real-time mode is a completely bonkers way to experience it again. Enjoy!
Patch notes:

Fixed a bunch of typos.
Copy's FX no longer covers up the UI.
Fixed a deadlock bug in the Force Quit mission.
The Hello World port scan now mentions the Vault Node.
Buffer now spouts an error when it fails to stop the trace due to insufficient slices.
Real-time mode is now available up to and including 'The Trench'.
Fixed an issue that got Buzzkill stuck in its animation, not releasing its turn.
Fixed an issue where Harpoon or Harpoon++ got stuck and would not release their turn after destroying a piece of ICE.
